I do not consider TEARS as cut & dried a human emotion plot. IMO Lasker & Carillo intended a military plot. When Lieutenant Waters sees a slaughtered mission he is likely a witness to a War Crime. He is obligated by the Articles of War to prevent if possible and investigate if possible, War Crimes. He decided to extend his mission into a Patrol Reconnaissance & Extraction, and during that discretionary period discovers the Ethnic Cleansing Village, thus justifying his intervention.
