Watch what we're involved in with the Community Skratch Games if you're sick of DMC stuff. See the videos in our profile. People who genuinely love skratching and scratch music. No battling, just performing. Excellent djs.
Slyce has been one of my favorite turntablist for quite some time, I got to say though I find it strange he is spinning this type of music. Think it's great he's experimenting though.
About having pre-produced records I could really care less, just saves time, doesn't mean you're doing any less work, nor is it any different than a routine in general.
I just hope he doesn't follow the mold instead of breaking it as he does so well.
he should had win the contest and not this stupid dj fly.....dj fly is a big faker with so much prepared sets. he has even cutz and samples inside...his juggles are so produced, that he only must make very simple cutz. and he always make the same poor grab.
Even thou I'm also not a dj fly fan, and must say that this set was AMAZING...I juste wanted to let you know, that Sly's also using custom records in this set (with samples inside (i.o.w. preproduced)! Why do you think he doesn't need to switch records, only uses one marker per record and can juts let them play straight through...?
The way things are goin with dmc the next champ could be mediocre but win because they had a few nice sounding tracks what the audience & judges identified.Remember that dj noodles made the eliminations & final & her routine was awful.
what would you prefer a dj spinning the current sound and being messy and being using prepared records or a dj dropin sum sick jump up drum and bass and including mixing scratching and beat juggling and makin it all flow know which id preffer
i'm disappointed you came 2nd.But the routine doesn't sound nice & distinctive .why are djs still copying imerges machine gun juggle sounds & style ? I hope you defend & win in 2009 but come back with some musicality & entertain cause the dmcs are losing it.
It is all semantics...Currently all popular music including hip-hop I would classify under EDM. With that said, I consider new electro and "old-school" LA, Miami Bass type sound two different things. I like the older stuff but cannot stand the new sound.

As long as the ideas/music drive the technology first and not the other way around, I don't see it as a problem. If Serato and Pro Tools were around in the eighties I'm sure DJ's would have used those tools without thinking twice and everybody would just see as part of the culture. I miss body tricks too but move on.
if your using custom vinyl or not, as long as your technical, got funk, soul, it dont matter what type of music you cut up, as long as you got a beautiful flow, no body can fuck with you
agree with the soul part.I personally hate this bullshit Euro style.A bunch of electro crap mixed together and some half ass juggles. Not talking about this routine in special.I just wonder how much this bullshit is going to hold on...untill they create robot dj's in a factory and send them to DMC?
Listen! The DJ MUST come with ORIGINALITY! We lost that in the late 90's with Noize, Cash Money etc. Battle breaks must be banned and all Dj's must use original records. This is sick but has no soul which is what Hip Hop is all about. I understand that the DMCs has moved away from that and that is why the indigo 2008 was souless and empty. No funk? No Soul? No DJ! Just an experimental DJ with noise that is not funky or original.
Totally feeling you on everything you've just said. Since my early teens i've been following bboying and dj'ing. Bboying level has lifted dramatically but DJ's like netik and co I'm not feeling at all. I love watching the summit back in the days.. Original cats on that stage.
Dont misinterpret.. congrats on placing 2nd .But i think your 97/98 sets were technically/ audibly better.you may not have won but you ENTERTAINED especially the drummers beat, billie jean & jb cold sweat routines which everyone still remembers. The other point im making is if djs worldwide are producing custom vinyl for comps then we may now hear worldwide music from competitors rather than the usual battle sounds / disses because an original producer has an identity.
dope! didn't expect slyce to be using custom records but he killed it!!!! Its cool to see a dj that has been doin it so long still crushing with current routines! lol at the Mr. Hahn comment!
sorry dude ~ i like mr hahn as well but ... after few years i in djing mr hahn is just a band dj/producer . wat he usually do in band is just normal skills ... ppl think he is good because is he is gud in producing and he makes everything sounds nice n really not much about skills ~ tats y many ppl think he is gud ~
he looks really profesional in the linkin park bobbing his head really hard in slow-mo while touching buttons the mpc. yeah! thats real dj skill. you must be a 16 year old white girl. those are the only people who listen to park anyway, lol.
i got no problems with the custom wax, but i wish they werent doin they whole set like that. i think being able ta switch and cue your records up is a skill in itself.
Me personally....I think DMC needs to go back to where it started. 2 Technics Turntables with the ORIGINAL old school DMC PMX 2 battle mixer. No customized vinyl meaning you have to bring your records and USE them. Let the DJs use whatever needles they want though. That Ortofon only rule is for the birds. If the dj has the skill he could pull it off on this set up. I think DMC should do it. Let me call Tony Prince!!!!!!
First off SLYCE gets my respect for one main reason. He's the Ric Flair of the DMC. He was doing his thing when Qbert,Shorkut,Craze,A-Trak,Total Eclipse and a few other retirees were still hot. They're all gone now. So for Slyce to still be able to win the USA AND get 2nd in the world......that DESERVES and COMMANDS respect. Now...If the DMC is allowing self made vinyl then they might as well allow mixers with effects and Serato (CONTINUED IN NEXT COMMENT BOX)
it doesnt make it right though. i mean slyce threw it down no doubt. But all in all fuck the DMC and Tony Prince. DMC is wack anymore with all the custom records. Takes all the originality out of the game. No more spending time building a set from wax that you dug for. Just take a bunch of shit load it into protools have it all layed out perfect and BAM have that shit pressed. Thats not HIPHOP.
Yo ! We had this discussion backstage also. Dj Pogo was mad as hell about djs using customs nowatdays!! In DMC rules its allowed so why not use , i mean diggin for records and shit put stickers etc.. hey why not put everything in 2 records.... The game aint the same! i didnt use customs , But ill maybe do it for next years set! PZ
first of all: it takes much more work to create a routine with custom records, since you have to produce the beats (at least mostly) AND do a routine. Believe me, Rafik put more work in his DMC 2007 routine than most of the DJs using "normal" vinyl.
Second: DJ Pogo. Well, all I can say is: go with the time, bruv! Things change. Why not use new technique when it is available??? Just because few people, callin' themselves "original", the whole scene should say: well, yes, ok, no new stuff then?
And what really disgusts me is, when such narrow-minded persons sit in a jury of a DMC WORLD Final competition and judge unfair because they do not see the skills, talent and originality of the BEST DJ - they just say: oh, he does not play hip hop, he plays some NEW stuff - I cannot give you points then homie, sorry. Come with some "oldschool"-shit next time, and we'll see what I can do concerning your points. But for now: go home. Those people are just weak shit.
In 2007 for example, it was obvious that some judges judged the competitors by using two criteria: 1. "does he use custom records?", and 2. "what kind of music does he play?". The most important criteria, THE ROUTINE ITSELF IN ALL ITS COMPLEXITY AND COHERENCE, that was just a minor point. Pure ignorance in my opinion. Narrow-mindedness - THAT destroys the battle game in turntablism - and not custom records or electro music.
No, i dont think so. I think you mean Precision didnt get enough points. He used real Vinyl and in my opinion he did some of the best Juggles i ever saw, but there were too many mistakes... for sure using customs you have no risk with switching the vinyls. And to the type of music: Yasa was second...
Risk is not the idea of the game, its showing off a hot routine, regardless which way you do it. Maybe only people who actually placed in a DMC battle understand that.
You get me wrong druboogie, i´m NOT against custom Vinyl, absolutly! It was meant as a answer to the people that think you can ONLY win with customs and Le Jad Sound. ...and thats not true!
I don't think you really got my point. I was not talking about Precision or any DJ in special - in my opinion, Precision was justified in placing 4th (although I really liked his routine!!), since the 3 guys on the first places were more original. I was talking about some judges who made/make decisions which are not comprehensible at all. My comments were referred to the general opinion of some "older" DJs/now judges who cannot and do not want to accept new styles.
Ah, I know now, you misunderstood my latest comment!:)I meant that, by judging using the two criteria I mentioned, those judges judged the DJ who used custom vinyl and electronic elemnts worse than others using normal vinyl. So I guess all in all, we have a similar opinion:) Cheers
thnx for posting this, I think Slyce is one of the best djs in the last decade. But with that said, I don't think this was his best routine. However, it is obvious that he tried to adapt to the style which has been a winning strategy the last 5 years. PeaCe
