  • Hello, Yes,It should be completed next week I hope. I will be putting on some vids of it this weekend. Thanks,Dave

  • Did you end up building the bowl lathe? I

  • Thanks for your comment. I know what you mean. When you get into multiples and do it daily you get you realy fast and efficient. I wish I had more time to turn. Soon I will

  • Watching the effort you put into the sphere made me think of an old production woodturner in Brisbane named Jack Edwards, who did some work for me. He had massive old lathes with 10 x 3 inch beams on the front of a bench for the bed. He used to turn ball tops for posts out of 5 x 5 stock (Hardwood) he would not make more than a dozen deep cuts and then would test the shape with a steel template then finish with a hand full of shavings. They were perfect, took less than 2 min and used one chisel

  • THANK YOU MY FRIEND,My son Dan just got hooked the last time he was home from new York City. Now I am in the process of building him a home made bowl turning lathe, keep turning and good luck to you.

  • Awesome Job! Wood turning is addictive. I learned in High School wood shop and have not stopped since. And nice music too.

  • whats the music in the start

  • Wow can you make something for me Plz. Plz Plz how can I find more info. about your work.

  • What would it cost to have one made?

  • @dbi1036 Hello, $50.00 in walnut or maple if u really want one.

  • Nice job. I bought a VB36 about 3 months ago. Wish there were a user group.

  • There is a user group at least the last time I was on there was. I am in a hurry right now but tonight Ill get back with info. ThanksDdave

  • No problem in turning a ball using the skew chisel like a scraper and than sandpapering it for a while.

All that should have been done on late by using the tool.

The ball is not parted. I very much doubt that this ball would roll in a straigt line on the ground. If it were parted and rolled on the floor it would wobble.

  • Ótimo...!

  • Thanks for your comments- Does anyone know where I can get a rule book. Thanks Dave

  • hey i have been wanting to start using a lathe. Does any one know where i can get a lathe? What lathes are best for the lowest price? and stuff like taht? help would be very nice :D

  • use a larger tool

  • Nice job. I used a little bit different technique with a template and it took a long time. You ever tried to hollow one out?

  • Thanks, I have not hollowed out one yet but it not hard to do. Just make a jam chuck the holds the ball tight and hollow. Now I will have to do that.

  • dude your awesome! well done! i can only make a broken piece of wood ^_^

  • @superduck89, Thanks Dude, You should try turning it's really not that hard to do. Good luck, Dave

  • Man thanks for checking out the video-when I turn I don't go by the rules I just do what feels good. Being self taught made me this way. I am reading a lot and tryn to improve as much as I can. Keep checkin I am going to turn a very big bowl next time. CYA Dave

  • you got the ball(Z), I have never seen anyone underhand skew turn before. Holy Shit! it was there along at the headstock, but damn, I never knew you could do that. To me, that is ballzy and control and a lesson to me to keep learning. Thank you Lathe Master

  • Wooden balls are useful for making muzzle loading "ball starters", just to give a modest example.

Otherwise, making wooden balls at the lathe with no jig anyone is a strong challenge, for the latheman.

  • major props to the man! good job!

  • yes thats very cool but y did he make it?

  • I sometimes make what I call ' On the ball awards' which I give to people who I think deserve them. I make the base like a trophy base, put a nice finish on it and a brass plate with the persons name. I also for my sons baseball coaches made them and painted the ball to look like a baseball. Their make great gifts and everyone loves them.

  • David, ihope you read this, you are a craftsman nice job, try this next, after you get your blank into a cylinder part it, chuck half of the cylinder, hollow it out on the side you just parted same to other side, make them join like a box and lid, line up the grain and put on the lathe between the centers, then make your perfect ball and it will be hollow, and because its hollow you can reverse chuck it and turn off the pip and sand easier.

  • masterful

i've never seen a carpenter without a bandage on his thumb

  • Sweet! Super! Gaura Haribol!! Beautiful Work!

  • great video

    very cool wooden ball!!!

  • Well, you have my good rating !

  • Thanks. When I get some time I will show the layout for marking and cutting the wood before mounting on the lathe.

  • Well done. Hey, do you know a website where I can purchase a mini wood lathe within the range of 100 dollars?

  • Sorry I don't. You won't get much of a new lath for 100.00 but keep checking the local newspaper under tools and machinery and sooner or later you will find some good deals on a used lathe. just make sure you check it running and there is not a lot of vibration. Good Luck,Dave I will have the set up and1ist part before u put the wood on the lath soon
