  • Good stuff! Totaly agree with you. Stay away from those pills folks!

Thank you, I love your videos!

  • I exercise four times a week, eat better than everyone i know, have goals, ect. I was still depressed. I went through 8 sessions with a therapist, 8 group sessions. Still depressed. I was prescribed Lexapro. No longer depressed. Currently: off Lexapro and still no longer depressed.

  • From my experience, you have to be truthful to what it is making you unhappy...and don't make excuses, just accept, then start to adjust and change...In the meantime you will feel envy around happy people ( occassionally)...the main thing is to surround yourself with sympathetic people - not people who berate you for feeling low. Only then can you 'perk-up'

  • I am worse without my antidepressants. I took Effexor XR for 12 years. Now, I cannot afford it, so I have to take whatever antidepressants I can afford now. My symptoms without them are worse back pain, crying all the time like just from looking at the carpet. I do agree antidepressants are a quick fix for situations we do not work through, but if that is what you have, you take them. It's better than a chapped face everyday.

  • @mermaidcandy hey man when you were on the antidepressants for that long did u notice a change in your personality or anything? or were you completely fine.

  • scary if really depressed people would believe in him… depression is not a joke or bad circumstances… think for yourself

  • I'm only 19 and I want to not have to take meds rest of my life. Should I go to a psychologist instead of a psychiatrist?

Also the add meds make me not hungry or tired which i think is making me more depressed what do you think?

  • You are the best oh my gosh finally someone who understands. You are a very smart Dr. and care ONLY about the cure and not the treatment. About what you said when people who are on a medication for a long time are afraid they will become more depressed if they stop, it is true. I tried it once i spent 3 months weaning off wellbutrin and i was only on it for 5 months and I was extremely depressed. I tried to go a whole month without the wellbutrin and trust me I was worse plz help!!!

  • Prozac caused me a nervous breakdown and made me feel homocidal. When I went off it I felt better.Other antidepressants caused horrible side effects.

  • The secret is that there is no secret

  • I would be curious about what you think about Thomas Moor's book "Care of the Soul, especially Chapter 9 entitled Gifts of Depression. It's interesting, but he doesn't use the term "depression". He uses "Dark Night of the Soul" and seems to indicate that this transformation (which is the word you use in your video) can be lengthy and, at times, difficult. In January of 2011 I celebrated my 8th year antidepressant free. I stopped taking them in January of 2003.

  • To imply that, Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, etc etc doesn't exist and that it is all in our imaginations is true madness. I have Bipolar 2 disorder and when I did get on medication it was then, that I began to get well. I did rebel and not take the meds in the beginning, because of listening to "quacks" like John Breeding.

I can't help but think of how many people he is HURTING because of his outlandish, stupid and self imposed views. So, go take some more acid you fucking freak.

  • @furtherfarthest1 You are absolutely right my friend. This man is a dangerous nutter. I would suggest he knows NOTHING about depression or mental illness in general. The info he is advocating is both incorrect and downright dangerous! I feel sorry for anyone who listens to this fool. Antidepressants can be LIFE SAVING drugs- make no mistake about it. There r millions of people worldwide whos lives have been transformed by the correct medication, just like any other illness.

  • @furtherfarthest1 My diagnosis was Bipolar 2 as well, and I was a good boy and did what my Psych told me and I never got well. After reading Anatomy of an Epidemic and taking eight months to withdraw, I am happier and healthier than I been in years. Thank you, John Breeding for your videos!

  • You know the funny thing about me is that when I was like five years old they thought I had ADD. So, they hooked me up on some drugs. Well, that didn't work to well seeing as it made me want to be alone, made my pupils huge, and made me very quiet. So, they got me off the drug and I've been happy ever since. Now though I'm borderline ADD. Though I'm glad that's just a title with no meaning. Drugs may work for you, but I suggest at least trying to find a more natural solution.

  • As is clear by this video, drugs are toxins. They're no better than illegal drugs. Natural is the way to go and, although I've just started therapy, I'm not taking anti-depressants. They just cover up the problem, not get to the root of it. I'm not going to be dependant on an unnatural drug to make me feel normal for the rest of my life.

  • There's a small and excellent online depression support group called Depression Hangout that is always open to anyone who is struggling with mental health problems (not just depression). It's run in its own chaotic way by its members who meet regularly in the chat room and it's a great place to seek and provide help and support, make new friends and even just have a laugh. (We all need that too!) To join just go to depressionhangout-dot-blogspot-dot-com.

  • Take no notice to this idiot. Antidepresants can be LIFE SAVING drugs. Prozac certainly changed my life so much for the better. Yes I know there r side effects ( mostly in the bedroom department! ) but to hear this man talk, he makes them sound useless. If he is a real doctor surely he MUST KNOW that antidepressants r a life saver for thousands of people.

  • @scabycat Antidepressants have been proven through numerous studies to be "no better than placebo for treatment of mild to moderate depressive states". It still is unclear to the medical community just what these drugs do and how they act on the brain and nervous system. The best reason why an antidepressant may APPEAR to work is the placebo effect. And having side effects from a medication just back up that placebo effect to both the patient and the doctor.

  • Shut up hippy.

  • @troglodyte01 why 'hippy' is meant to be an insult, I do not know.

  • Thank you so much for your kind information and you loving way to treat these difficult problems. I am happy there are people/doctors like you around. keep it up!

  • Hello Dr JOHN l would like to ask you about sociopathollogy what is your opinion? pls send me a masage if you can. thanks

  • It's so sad.. Because the only reason they do promote drugs is simply for a profitable gain. Their not going to make money if they go and tell them that it's as simply as eating right. They're not going to make money if they tell you to communicate and interact with others. They're not going to profit from telling someone to reconnect with nature. Drugs are never the answer. The answer lies around us and it is free!

  • One problem with my depression is that I obsess over the questions such as "Is life worth living?" etc... This amazes me because, before my depression, I used to be the happiest person alive despite I wasnt rich or else. I just loved life.

I hope I'll get out of this and be happy and take pleasure in the simplest things again.

    Any advice, doctor?

  • @ValyHxM Read Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankyl. Look up logotherapy. I found it very interesting.

  • Love his comment on the adhd progressing to psychosis. That is what happened to me. Took antidepressants, went nuts, was diagnosed bipolar, given antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, etc. Developed dystonia, became suicidal, etc. Stopped the drugs, all the stuff went away, at least some of the suicidal thoughts. Now I'm depressed because of the bull the psychiatrists and their drugs put me through. Now i actually have real reasons to be depressed and unstable...The drugs are responsible for a lot.

  • antidepressants work by making you insane...Took them from 14 to 17 and wound up suicidal and shoved in numerous hospitals. I finally said screw this and stopped taking them myself. Went through months of withdrawal, still don't feel the same...

  • @utube3215 Please eat foods high in serotonin, folic acid and anti-oxidants. The combination leads to increased metabolism by your body and the return of depleted dopamine cells. It takes a lengthy amount of time to repair the dopamine cells, sometimes 2 years. In the meantime eating nutritious foods will systematically replace the lost energy and happiness. research the foods high in what I first stated and try it for yourself. Also, spring water, not tap or distilled water. Stay hydrated. :)

  • Dr. Breeding, I've seen most of your videos about depression. You say that exercise, nutrition and support as in friends etc. should be checked. Regarding the support: Can you fell better over observing other people's worst problems in your depression, and can you fell worst when noticing everyone around you finding happiness? What kind of people do you need around you, people happy and make you envy them or the other kind that are doing worst than you which make you fell lucky in a certain way?

  • @vialb2 Fair question. Doc?

  • Kudos to Dr. Breeding for this!!!!!

I've been doing research on depression (I'm a psychology student at UTSA), and I've concluded that psychoactive drugs do MUCH more harm than good. Sure, they mask the symptoms of the disorder - but they also create a chemical dependency, which can lead to big trouble down the road. Antidepressants are similar to cocaine (they work in similar ways on different neurotransmitters) and they basically rewire the limbic system, much to the user's detriment.

  • Wait, do you really not believe that chemical imbalances are real? You're not a very scientific person, are you? I've had anorexia nervosa, depression, anxiety and OCD for seven long, miserable years. Do you mean to tell me that self-starvation, hatred of who I am and severe isolation are natural, and that my brain is no different from the brain of a happy person? I don't buy that. I also think that Prozac is doing me much more good than a couple glasses of water and more exercise.

  • @CsixHtwelve0six

I suffered from clinical depression for years because of events in my early childhood. I was given Prozac to deal with the symptoms but was never told to just talk about my problems. I got tired of feeling like a zombie on the Prozac so I stopped taking it and started dealing with my problems by talking to people and trying to figure out what my problem was. Prozac stops you from looking at yourself and finding a solution. It keeps you dependent on it which is the whole point.

  • I'm in extensive therapy in addition to the medication, but when my depression was at its worst, I could barely get off the couch, much less drive 45 minutes to my therapists office and engage in deep discussion about my issues. I'll eventually go off the Prozac, but for the time being, my progress in therapy would be nonexistent without it. My dosage is actually very low (40mg) and I don't consider myself dependent at all. I don't go on any medicine that I don't feel is absolutely necessary.

  • @CsixHtwelve0six

I would suggest you start taking daily vitamin supplements. They actually do help a lot with depression as I believe most depression is simply a chemical imbalance do to poor diet. Exercise does help a lot as physical exertion releases endorphins into the body. Just find someone you trust to talk to about your feelings and eventually you'll find the root of the problem and be able to deal with it. Don't expect someone else to solve your problems, only you have that power.

  • @Devilock79 Of course, I expect nobody else to solve my problems, but I need sufficient energy to do so, which is why I decided to start taking the Prozac. As for exercise, it is hugely beneficial in patients with just depression, but I've been forbidden from exercising because I abuse the privilege. With non eating disordered patients, exercise is a nice addition to therapy and meds, but it by no means replaces them when they are necessary.

  • @CsixHtwelve0six

Please don't take offence but I think your main problem is you spend too much time inside your own head. You focus too much about what might be wrong with you instead of appreciating the good things about yourself. I'd suggest volunteering for an organization for children with special needs or answering calls for the Samaritans or something similar. When you start to see how others have it you tend to appreciate what you have a bit more. I wasted too many years worrying....

  • @CsixHtwelve0six

..worrying about myself that I couldn't see a way out. When I started working with people who were much worse off than me I started to forget all the crap I went through when I was a kid. Well, not really forget but I was able to put it into perspective. Everyone has their own personal hell to live through but eventually we either survive or we let it get the better of us. So try volunteering and helping those that were born with a disadvantage. It will help everyone involved.

  • I absolutely agree with you! I don't take offense at all, but I do think that before I can help other people, I need to be at peace with myself. I would never argue that learning to be happy with who I am and then going out to do good in the world is a bad thing. I just think that, in relation to this video, medication is sometimes necessary for people trying to overcome their problems. Not all problems can be fixed via volunteering. Sometimes, the greater good is an end result, not a beginning.

  • There is no such thing as "good nutrition" unless you grow your own garden using non-phosphate fertilizers and organic materials. You do not "drink more fluoride" from the tap in order to become healthy. You distill your water source. Conveyance has taken the place of common sense and no one buys the truth, yet cover-up's are all well funded. Fight the powers that suppress us, and wipe your mind clean of this indoctrination we call education. Creation and love are the solution to depression.

  • You are defective, a sinner, you are not politically correct, tolerant, sensitive, and need help. If you actually believe this Marxist rhetoric maybe you deserve death from "Dr. Death". My friend Jeff has been on Xanax for 12 years, and he cry’s when a leaf falls from a tree in front of him. Your own weakness as a person drives you to believe in these psycho-political operators pretending to be doctors, cult leaders, and self-help manuals. Please stop promoting this lie by becoming a lab rat.

  • You might appreciate this video about an artist who survived a suicide attempt:

  • VERY VERY VERY GOOD.

I wasn't sure of medical treatments of mental health before this.

  • I wish I heard these views 10 yrs ago but better late than never...excellent video.

    - Melanie A.

  • A wonderful, hopeful and refreshing approach to how we look at depression. Thank you so much Dr. Breeding, you have given me a lot to think about.

    - Melanie A.

  • Can you explain WHY MRI's show chemical imbalances? Dude, I had psychotherapy for ages, and then I finally took them, the first set of drugs didnt work, but then they worked... those drugs freaking work!

  • Thank you so much for this video, I hope God blesses you. I have depressed for a while, but I am learning to get my act together by doing more of what I enjoy, having a plan about the future, doing what I have to do and taking care of myself. It just makes so much sense and I wonder why more depressed people aren't just being helped with their lives rather than being sent to talk to someone or bein put on drugs! Thank you!

  • yea...i wanna go canoeing....or kayaking....so much fun, havnt done that in a long time

  • This man seems to talk with a lot of sense - I would trust him.

  • your insane. Your not in a respectable shirt. I m not going to listen to someone who doesnt dress like a normal person and talks his yabbering mouth about nutters all day for respect. Your a freak. Are you a even a qualified psychiatrist because I d be bitterly diasppointed if your wre. You dont die from sotpping taking bi-polar meds.

  • @coconutnatty awww c'mon! you must be joking! this guy is great! he has a lot of good points...his advice is very wise, so what if he's not the stereotypical dr. i'd choose talking to this guy over the conventional psychiatrists...they're all a bit too yuppity for me...dunno if i can trust the mainstream business....seems corrupt now...

  • this is something like theism vs atheism... can you prove the toxicity of antidepressants? how can you prove it if they say antidepressant don't work?

anyway I'd like to thank my psychiatris for my sertraline prescribed!

I can live now, I can study, I'm about to be married!

I tried psychoanalysis, gestalt, hipnoses, and so on...none of their speech worked for me but a good psychiatrist and he's ethics, good diagnoses and treatment.

  • What are your thoughts on Dysthymia?

  • My memory has not been the same since taking paxil. I also gained 25 pounds while on it and experienced withdrawals and hallucinations while discontinuing. The other sick thing I noticed is because you come in with a mental issue the doctors will tell you that you are upset not due to the lasting side effects from taking the meds but because your "depression" is returning.. This is such a dangerous situation to be in. I really felt empty minded and lazy on it as well.

  • Could you PLEASE do a video on DEPERSONALIZATION.

  • so um....where the HECK does one begin making this transformation when they are smack dab in the middle of the worst they're problems have ever been? take me for instance...anxiety for years, meds dont work, now in deep depression (with continued anxiety) what is the very first step? or is it a whole bunch of steps at once? it feels so hopeless....theres got to be that first step...

  • @BlinkinFirefly Try eating more fruits and vegetables?

  • @minus00 lol

  • @minus00 lol, yea i def could use more fruits and veggies but.....really???

  • @BlinkinFirefly you asked for a first step, that is a pretty good one. You are not the result of your "chemicals", your chemicals are a result of you. You are perfect, know this. Try getting more sunlight, going for a walk. Try reading A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle or The Mastery Of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz. Both might help you. You are perfect just the way you are.

  • i learnt all this myself in deep though and recovery from a breakdown and the drugs and systems that destroyed me even more. knowledge set me free having the power of knowing how wrong these are and how i broke free myself. i wish people would take on all the information such as what is discussed here.

  • German national soccer team goalkeeper commits suicide. FAther is psychiatrist. We need enlightenment on this issue. Nobody seems to know the dynamics involved.

  • I still remember working as extended day-care attendant. Mario was your typical seven year old boy, full of energy, had a hard time of sitting still, if he wasn't fully engaged in an activity. He never hurt anyone, never pugnacious, just hyper. One day I saw Mario, he looked sad. I asked if him if was ok. He said he had to take medicine so he'd be normal. It broke my heart. He was never the same happy energetic little guy. I wonder what ever became of him.

  • are all A.D.'s harmful? im on cipramil for the last 2 months, and have also been on stratera for ADHD on and off?

  • Maybe I'm not the best person to answer but I can surely tell you that anything that isn't natural isn't good for you. It should only be applied as the very last resort. I guess that if you have ADHD there should also be natural exercises that would allow you to function well without them.

Lots of famous people are diagnosed with ADHD. They're overactive, that's true but are really smart, entertaining people with loads of energy and no destructive behaviour. They made their weakness a strenght.

  • Yes, I think that is very true, its always a good idea to try turn a disadvantage into something positive,

As time goes by I realise more and more that ADHD was not the cause of my bad decision making but the symtoms are amplified by other things like anxiety and self esteem issues, I think its far too easy to throw medication at a teenager,,,, its alot harder to get to the root of the problems. Thanks for your point view :)

  • I had a breakdown at work 2 years ago. My GP prescribed fluoxetine, 3 months down the line I had very convincing delusional thoughts (bad ones) and hallucinations. The doctors put me back on antidepressants Mirtazipane it was like I was living in a bad dream. Two and a half months ago I managed to stop them. Now feeling much better and on my way to recovery. Antidepressants are given like sweets now days, but they can be dangerous! I am finding your videos very helpful. Thank you Dr Breeding.

  • Antidepressants i dont like them, but thay do give you more energy.. thay can help for some.

  • See. Dr. A.Hoffer.

  • People get worse when they stop using AD because they are in withdrawawal, not because the drugs worked . The drugs cause adrenal stimulation which causes initial effects but adrenal crash follows . The drugs kill receptors and hyperstimulate the remaining ones , hence the withdrawal. The drugs kill brain cells and make you more depressed long term . I have tardive dyskinesia from <1 yr AD use.

  • 4:00 and on... genius!

  • People who trust the psychiatric "experts" probably also think the Federal Reserve and cap-and-trade are a good idea.

Having said that, don't quit cold turkey. See his latest videos for his caveat.

  • cold turkey ?

  • So he must not ever have had problems with depression? It's a disease. I'm sorry, but there is something amuck. Yeah, it's environmental but it's also physical. Ask me about it. It sucks, but it's there, and no exercise is not enough. This idiot needs to talk to someone who knows. It's not all placebo. It's not. Everything is a toxin. We're all gonna die. Thanks Doc. How enlightening.

  • you need a hug, friend. *HUGS*

  • Hey thanks.

  • anytime ;D

  • Comment removed

  • i agree with you bro i do exercise 1,5 hour every day sure it help but not the change will you except,i dont know what to say,all began after i use 1 year the proscar medicine for my hair after that shit i have anxiety and depression something is going wrong with hormones i beileve.

  • Trust your doctor, take your medicine as prescribed, Meanwhile make the effort for healthier eating habits, fewer addictions (smoking, cafeine, tv, alcohol, drugs), much more physical (exercise) &

    intellectually stimulating life.

But don't think major clinical depression can be treated with "lots of water" or canoing. Seriously. An on-screen psychologist doesn't have the education or medical knowledge to evaluate psychiatry. Might have an opinion or argument (who doesn't)- not the CREDITS.

  • Life is thickly sown with thorns, and I know no other remedy than to pass quickly through them. The longer we dwell on our misfortunes, the greater is their power to harm us.

    Voltaire

  • baby, focus on u,what are u good at?think.were all different sweety, horses 4 courses and all that, but find u and love it,and when u do baby, all will find u.i know its hard, but little by little find ur own way and it dont matter what anyone may think.maybe their now gunna be jealous because u found something they will never have.x

  • I have been watching my own depression. It is mostly dealing with shattered dreams. Letting go- what ever dimension it is you have to let go is the answer. There is so much life ahead of you...

  • Some great practical advice on this video. However, I strongly caution anyone who is taking medications to not suddenly stop. I did this a few times after I started feeling better and my depression returned. I take strong issue with people who say that these medications are merely covering up issues that need to be dealt with. I was, and am, aware of the reasons for my depression while on medications or not. I have found that medications make it easier for me to confront them

  • I'm a philosophy student and I would love to study more about Anxiety. Hopefully in the future, as I haven't the means now. Anxiety, as anxiety, the very nature of itself, perpetuating itself, needs to be more widely discussed. People need to learn to recognise anxiety and the tricks it plays with your mind, I would wager that 70% of diagnosed depressions are actually forms of anxiety; it can cause pathological doubt - i.e. unhelpable patients. Anxiety has the key.

  • I watch this and I wonder about the real question, where is the line drawn between depressed and not depressed. Sometimes I wonder whether being introverted is the same as depression. Sometimes I feel detached, almost unfeeling, but I can see the world clearer than most. It's like you are alone because you can see the hard reality of life. Maybe it's true, maybe you are alone in life. I know I'm not depressed, because I can't feel sad. I don't feel anything, just nothingness.what could this be?

  • depression is not feeling sad..its juts feeling very bad inside and being down all the time...kind of a headache with negative thoughts all the time..its no sadness..its a feeling of emptiness..nearly no fellings at all...

  • I'm dead inside

  • Dr Breeding,

Would you recommend a valid lab to have a bit of hair tested for specific deficiencies, please?

    Thank you.

  • I believe antidepressants can help in a "relative" matter for some temporary cirumstances, for which the bad experience becomes unnecessary.

  • What a refreshing change you are! When I was in my late teens I was treated by a variety of psychiatrists with 129 ECT treatments and a plethora of drugs. Not once did they address life with an abusive alcoholic father and an enabling mother. I finally opted out of the medical model and chose natural healing methods. Years later I am healthy, whole and drug free. Your views about lifestyle and attitude and self-care is something more need to hear...and apply! Love your videos!

  • Thank you sir

  • lots of great info doc, and one hell of a great shirt. keep on talking your making a difference.

  • thank you

  • Both of my parents are clinical psychologists here in Houston. It's all trash. And no drug will ever fix you.

Pull away the curtains...so as to see the real show.

  • i wish i had someone like this to protect me from psychiatry when i was a child, instead of my asshole parents who just medicated me for 8 years of my fucking life.

  • Thank-you :)

  • Good advice your more likely to go through a Psychotic break coming off the drugs so go off slowly. The big problem and I heard it said simply. Most people don't have a kind heart anymore. So we have alot of problems in society. You are more likely to commit suicide ect on the drugs. And if your like me, goto church, exercise feed homeless people you will be very much alone in the world realizing most people are brain washed disillusioned assholes.

  • ahh, but i did ask a question... i'll quickly rephrase: can a better diet lead significantly to better emotional health? if so, what would that diet contain?

  • One thing is for sure, a poor diet will definitely create emotional imbalance, moodiness, physical, emotional and mental exhaustion, anxiety, etc.

Certain vitamin deficiencies will causes the symptoms of depression, anxiety disorders, fatigue, etc.

See videos, "Nutrition and Mental Health"

    "Nutrition vs. Conventional Medicine"

  • Magnesium intake below the RDA is very common problem and magnesium can have a number beneficial effects on the mind(depression, anxiety, sleep, stress). Try to get more magnesium in your diet or supplement it(avoid the common magnesium oxide as it is poorly absorbed).

  • @TeddyOfRS

I know a bit about the effects of nutrition on the mind. For one, prolonged abuse of refined sugar can and does cause both hyper activtivy with low attention span(capatalised under the title ADHD) and violent behaviour. It happens by excess sugar detected in the body causes a huge insulin dose to radically lower the blood sugar to near critical levels. This low blood sugar triggers the release of stress hormones, 3 of which in the brain force blood flow from the prefontal cortex >

  • @TeddyOfRS From theprefontal cortex, to the hind brain. This causes the abve mentioned behaviours. Prolonged sugar abuse damages the connection to the lesser used brain cells, solidifying those behaviours. Diet impacts consciousness in a huge way. Passion flower incarnata is a natural anti depressants because it increases your serotonin levels without damaging your brains ability to prduce the chemical. Its non addictive. Watch russell blaylock, nutrition and behaviour for more information...

  • all you reply to is the arguments... what the hell?

  • People usually don't reply to things they agree with unless it's just to acknowledge the person that left the comment and say that you do in fact agree with them.

When people ask questions, I generally try to reply as well.

  • man ive been down for sometime now i feel that its just a something that happens but its still their bothering me idk maybe i just need someone that will just hear what i have to say cuz i dont really trust people because i feel that dont even care of what i have to say so i dont even bother to open up i just need a ear to talk to

  • can i get less depressed by quitting mass produced goods and focusing on healthy, natural foods instead? if so, which foods do i eat that will help me be healthy and happy, because all my thoughts are the same now, i can't wander past self awareness... it's bullshit to me and i actually feel pretty selfish for always worrying about myself. i just want to care about things that matter and get past this seemingly hopeless self awareness... please give me your best advice, i don't know what to do.

  • Shit happens in life for a reason. And for some reason my life is full of shit.

  • thank you.

  • fuck drugs and psychiatry there jst a bunch of drug pushers. they put me on medication when i was 8 years old until i was about 16 and never even told what i had or even given any serious type of therapy. granted i was acting out and needed some help in life. however, being so medicated that i was basicly a zombie wasnt the answer. i didnt hear things nor see things that werent there so i just dont understand it. it should be a fucking crime to medicate children like that

  • dr breeding: you claim psychiatry is hustle; medications create an unnecessary chemical balance that keeps people sick. drug companies want this so that they make $. to a degree, i agree with you. but if you think all people can cope without meds, you are quite naive, moreso dangerous. the problem lies in the fact that psych meds are limited in efficacy, and that NO MED ALONE FOR ANY CONDITION can cure anyone of anything. your belief that psychiatry looks only to meds is prejudiced & foolish.

  • Take a class in college in biological psychology; i.e psychiatry.

It's the study of physical medicine as methods to control behavior; that means drugs, brain operations, deep brain stimulation, electroshock therapy.

    Purely physical interventions.

The mass majority of psychiatrists do not do "therapy". It is too time consuming. Medication management is far faster and more profitable.

  • i am enrolled in a doctoral program in clinical psychology, have taken the classes you mentioned, and have worked in psych wards with a variety of people.

do you truly feel that a suicidal person should be given NO MEDICATIONS to coincide with psychotherapy? do you feel that a psychotic individual should not have meds when they ARE at risk of dying/killing because they can't care for themselves? do you think repeat sex offenders should not be given hormonal medications to slow their libido?

  • CDC Studies show the CBT is more effective than medication for suicidality and result in higher surivial rates.

Repeat sex offenders need to stay in jail where society is protected from them. Any serious sex offender is given mandatory psychiatric treatment. If they "repeat" the treatment was obviously ineffective.

  • why do you think sex offenders need psyciatric treatment? only criminals need medications? is that what you think?

  • Huh? Read my comment more closely. I said they need to stay in jail.

Sex offenders are usually given mandatory psychiatric treatment, that's not because I think they should get it, that's because that what society currently does.

I think for the most part the treatments they are given are ineffective and waste of tax dollars.

  • yes, most psychiatrists dont do therapy; in my experience, most therapists dont do therapy either. remember this, NO ONE CAN ENGAGE IN THERAPY AGAINST THEIR WILL. to implement the changes you espouse would harm many people. PSYCH MEDS ARE NOT A CURE, THEY ONLY CAN HELP.

your point of view is honorable and moral, but i feel it is a gross negligence on your part to nay-say the entire use of medication because you disagree with their use. you offer your opinion with no clear reasons or examples.

  • "THEY ONLY CAN HELP"

What bunch of crap. Sometime they obviously hurt people. How about the more 10,000 people that one a lawsuit against Eli Lilly because Zyprexa caused them diabetes?

The DSM list iatrogenic disorders for all the major classes of psychotropic drugs.

What about the permanent tardive dyskinesia induced by antipsychotics?

If you think these drugs "can only help" you have a seriously screwed up viewpoint.

Yes, we can use drugs to effectively sedate someone. WooHoo!

  • Want a reference?

The International study of Schizophrenia (Harrison G. et al 2001)

Three separate World Health Organization studies have found higher recovery rates for schizophrenics in underdeveloped nations(with limited antipsychotic use) than here in the US.

  • i disagree with this dr. i drink lots of water everyday, i exercise and eat well, but im still depressed and have struggled with it for many years..and seeing a psychologist didnt work for me.

  • It's up to you to get better. All you have to do is decide to change your thoughts an dfeelings.

  • so what are you doing now??

  • thx alot! nicely said

    peace

  • Thank you for making this video.

  • please don't bash me on this comment.he seems drunk to me.

  • well if you do not want to be bashed then do not state please don't bash me. That is just asking for someone to come along to bash you.

  • thank you it actualy made me feel better and aware

  • GREAT GUY.

    GREAT KNOWLEDGE!

  • We are supposed to have feelings - they are normal and popping pills never helped anyone deal with life. It took me a long time to see through psychiatry's lies - It's so sad to see others fry their brains on the "medications" I hate to think of America's future...

  • True...

Antidepressants take advantage of the emotion of hope. Doctors will prescribe one after the other and the patient is meant to judge if they feel better or not. The drugs do not have a clearly measurable effect. They are not mood elevators and doctors do not really know much about their effects. Withdrawal must be very gradual with the emphasis of VERY. It took me a a year.

  • Thank you so much for this video.you have explained so much to me.i feel so much better just watching this video.iv tryed two diffrent anti-depresseants and had a bad reaction to both and for a minute i thort that they where the only way out.thank you so much

  • You rock!

  • It took three years but I got my friend off meds (and Doritos) and on roller-blades.

    Success!

If you have a friend on meds..it takes a lot of time and patience to wipe away the illusion that the meds are necessary. However, if it matters a lot to you, definitely try.

Just about every person I know who is on meds [ADHD/Depression/Sleep/Bipolar], refuses proper diet, sleep, and exercise. Coincidence? HAha no

  • This is very informing..

  • Once we all allow nature to run it's course entirely, we will be a peaceful world. Ask Dr. Breeding about the power of the beard. My theory is that once a boy accepts his beard, free from vain, will he then be a man.

  • what if nature does not consider man's happiness in it's process? to let it run it's course could mean death. anti-depressants are not the cure but they are a tool for a person to at least control nature when it is violent and destructive to a person. it should not be used over long periods of time, considering the side effects but it also should not be discredited completely as it can be useful. on a side note, i wonder why my last comment was deleted and not responded to.

  • Mans happiness is up to the man. He must accept the good with he bad, not get lost in the bad and forget the good. What could be violent and destructive and completely inavoidable? nothing. Just watch out for danger and do the moral thing and youll be happy most of the time.

  • i was stating that if a person who is depressed is in an extreme state that letting "nature take its course" might not be the best solution since nature might be working against the person or the body might not be functioning in a way that can return the person to homeostasis. you added unavoidable to my argument. cancer is violent and destructive to a person, should they just let it run it's course or just act morally so it can go away, or try medications to get it to a workable level?

  • The subject is depression and antidepressants, not cancer which is a physical ailment.Homeostasis is lost when unnatural elements or concentrations of a natural element are introduced to the body.

  • depression has physical symptoms. cancer was used as an analogy as some argue that depression is a disease. if it is then there is reason for using AD to bring one back to homeostasis. homeostasis is regained either through regulation or supplementation. for example, the necessary but toxic iron: low iron diets or iron supplements. being that depression can be socially induced, introduction would not have to be the substance itself, if you are implying that AD is the cause of depression.

  • I liked the advice in general. Slow down, learn who you are rather than what "modern culture" is telling you to be. The modern sensory overload is blinding people.

  • That was amazing. Clearly what I've been trying to explain to my therapist for over a year. Thank you!

  • One of the greatest videos I've seen yet by Dr. Breeding. I completely agree with everything you said there. You're doing a wonderful thing for people with this type of psychoeducation about alternatives and the harmful effects of medication over time and in general.

  • In the beginning of the video, you claim anti-depressants do not work. Well, if you also claim that these medications alter your brain, what is the point of taking them? Why would someone take something that alters their brain yet does not work according to the "evidence"? This doesn't add up. It's almost contradicting.

  • Marketing.

  • Marketing? So you're telling me the psychopharmacologists and psychiatrists have lied to me by telling me these drugs can help? So basically all the psychiatrists, doctors, people who deal with marketing, and others are in one big scam or on one huge team against the less educated public? They diagnose someone with anything they can and then make drugs that do not work, yet alter your brain, and sell them so that each part of this "team" makes money? I'm very skeptical about this...

  • I'd check your diet first. Do you eat a lot of processed foods with msg, aspartame and chemical additives. They've all been shown to affect brain functions. I eat more fruits and veg than anything else.

Second do you watch much TV? It's got a whole array of problems but the flicker of the screen will put your mind into a receptive state for the lies and NLP programming that's state approved. This is not a relaxed state of mind.

Do you know how to calm yourself and relax you mind and body?

  • My diet is not good. I know about chemical additives put into foods, what is inserted into processed foods, and I know it's bad for you. The problem isn't the lack of knowledge, it's lack of motivation.

No, I do not watch TV often; I hate t.v.. Instead of this "receptive state" (I highly agree with this, btw) that most people fall into while television, I fall into a pessimistic state. I find scams, subliminal messages, and stupidity all the time.

  • I was going to applaud your comment on TV "programming" and then I realized you were already on my friends list...Of course it was a good comment!

  • well, you hit it exactly - it is a little dark, but business is business...

  • It amazes me when supposedly intelligent people can't tell the difference between "conspiracy" and "commonality of interest". Both these dynamics often lead to the same result and if we use our brains it's quite easy to follow the money/prestige trail without confusing one with the other.

Give it a go r4legend and see what you get.

  • i like you're view of things.....very true to me...I don't suffer from anything i know of...I am "normal" haha...no disrespect to anyone here.....meow

  • Could you please direct me to some alternamtive methods for dealing with Adult ADD (inattentive subtype) and generalized anxiety. I recovered from being depressed almost my whole life without having to stay on drugs, and stayed recovered for the last 4 years, but I have relapses of anxiety and inattentiveness dealing with academics.

  • Thank you so much again I love your videos. I have been diagnosed from pillar to post for over 40 years. Chemical imbalance I have been told so many times. As the DSM expanded so it seems do my "apparent" illnesses and the writing of more and more prescriptions ... I still struggle all the time am I really ill am I not. Been put on drugs on and off for the last 20 years. I am beginning to believe they have caused some of the symptoms I now have. My last diagnoses and not my first was Bi-polar.

  • Im 22 and have suffered from depression for 3 years. i have had 4 relapses due to not taking the meds.this is ridiculous since i got my life back on track each time.i was doing really well in college and i got depressed again because i missed 24 days out of an 80 day period. THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY BRAIN. Anyway, thank you Dr. John.

  • "I have had 4 relapses due to not taking the meds."

The medications alter your brain. When you go off of them, you will experience withdrawal symptoms or discontinuation syndrome. A person can feel depressed during the withdrawal, this is true of someone who took the medication for depression or took it for other reason.

Google your "Drug Name" and "Tapering Off" and you will find information about what others experienced going off the med.

  • My thoughts on treating mental illness are identical to yours.. I just think people should be wary of other so called solutions that involve someone taking advantage of your spiritual weekness..

  • Incredibly moving. I cried for awhile after watching this.

  • thank you.

  • Suggestion: I´d like to hear more about "creating a safe space for people"...sounds interesting.

  • This man bless his heart is speaking truth, I do agree with alot of what he's saying.

  • I'm glad I had a bad reaction to my meds, I think I lasted 2 months on them. My bad reaction included having very real fantasies of killing my dr, I completely lost all sense of right and wrong. I stopped with the pills because I thought he was trying to kill me with them. I wasn't even sick to begin with, they were what made me sick!

  • I continue to try to get my roommate to do the things you recommend but nothing seems to work for very long. I don't know why he is depressed. He gets angry when I bring it up. Sometimes he gets so mad it frightens me. What do I do now?

  • I second the Amen Brother!

  • Anti-depressants don't help and it's hard to get off them. The doc is right, you need to exercise, eat right, and engage in physical and social activities.

  • Amen brother!

  • the proceeding message is a response to 'scarysky'

  • Breeding is right on. I thank my lucky stars that I got off of the ritalin and adderall by 11th grade and have never looked back since. I shudder to imagine the fleeced zombie I would be now if I had stayed on. Don't listen to your parents or loved ones, get off of the pills

  • I agree completely... antidepressants will give you the illusion of stability for even 5-10 years- then you start to realize - hey i'm not progressing here...

  • Why I'll never willingly take Antidepressants. I'm tired of people suggesting I need to take drugs to overcome life's problems instead of actually dealing with life.
