The Guess Who are great and a great wrong was made right with the Winnipeg Jets coming back home to Winnipeg! I was part of the 300,000 strong Rally that couldn’t save the Jets when they moved to Phoenix. It broke the heart of the ‘Peg.

The politicians don’t care enough to do anything (the Golden Boy reference in actually quite poignant, as he sits high above the Legislature building looking out to the troubled North End).
Most people don't get this. John K. Samson does NOT hate HATE Winnipeg, it's the kind of love you have for a sibling, I would say. Sometimes you hate them, but deep in your heart you love them to death.

I hate feeling that I'll be stuck here for ever because I spent my savings to move here and can no longer afford to move back. One bright side though, I love the baby geese in the spring and a zoo I can go to without dropping $20 admission! :)

Having lived in Winnipeg, I can tell you that it's a state of quiet desperation. There are good people trying to improve things, but a lot of others whose motto is: "Good enough for Winnipeg". Occasional flashes of inspiration helped to sustain us all. I wish the city well.

There are beaches.. just not in the middle of the city. Most cities don't have an amusement parks, but we have tons of festivals, and the red river X. The rest of what you say is just stupid.
You wont find friendlier or warmer hearts in any other city, that's more than enough to shake the cold. But us Manitobans are a hardy folk! It's only visitors that hate this city because they know nothing of what the locals do for fun.
Don't forget Victoria beach and Winnipeg Beach (I'm sure there are more).
I'm not a huge fan of the cold either! If the cold doesn't get ya' the wind certainly will! Portage and main st have the coldest temps ever recorded on the planet! (-60) :S but it's worth it :)

i've never been to or lived in winnipeg (BC!) but this song perfectly describes the feelings oh just having nothing happen... those months where everything is just flat lining and you'd do anything for something different.
The Weakerthans are genius.

Having lived in Winnipeg, I can tell you that it's a state of quiet desperation. There are good people trying to improve things, but a lot of others whose motto is: "Good enough for Winnipeg". Occasional flashes of inspiration helped to sustain us all. I wish the city well.

This song is a piece of a whole album that tells a poignant story...from different views...I so know the feeling John.K is expressing...as do many of you it seems...

i am from gimli and always go to winnipeg and i have lived in calgary and i agree I HATE WINNIPEG!! dirty greasy dangerous city but dont get me wrong ive tied a few on there good times CAN be gad!

The song is about YOUR town/city, and the fact that everyone will hate where they are/where they're from simply because everyone feels trapped there at some point.

yes anyone can relate where ever they are, but it is still a song about Winnipeg.

And yes the music scenes, especially the underground metal scene, are fantastic. To me, that's the most eventful thing that I could ever experience.
The weather does suck in winter, but with the proper layers being worn, it's all good.

There are beaches.. just not in the middle of the city. Most cities don't have an amusement parks, but we have tons of festivals, and the red river X. The rest of what you say is just stupid.
You wont find friendlier or warmer hearts in any other city, that's more than enough to shake the cold. But us Manitobans are a hardy folk! It's only visitors that hate this city because they know nothing of what the locals do for fun.

Don't forget Victoria beach and Winnipeg Beach (I'm sure there are more).
I'm not a huge fan of the cold either! If the cold doesn't get ya' the wind certainly will! Portage and main st have the coldest temps ever recorded on the planet! (-60) :S but it's worth it :)

i love this song even though i live in toronto and i've never been to winnipeg. you can be in montreal or edmonton and still relate. its just a great canadian song that kids from the 'burbs can relate to. my friend dated a girl who had family in the peg city, and he also has nothing good to say about the city :)

There is a big difference between people who are from WInnipeg and make fun of it sometimes, compared to cities like Toronto who are hated by the entire country. Btw, the Jets will win a Cup before the Maple Laughs! Book it!

fuckin' eh! I've lived in the peg all my life I know alot of people not from the 'peg who love this song, and i don't get it. Every one of the words rings true, but only about winnipeg. I don't know how someone from Toronto would understand how we cling onto the dream of getting the Jets back, even when they weren't the best, when people in Toronto have had the leafs since the formation of the NHL. No dissrespect to the Jets btw.

Torontans know nothing of loosing an NHL team, the cities North End or even the Golden boy, and thus don't know why someone would live in winnipeg all there life and still say "I hate winnipeg".
