Mainstream is (at least in my eyes) Music that is written just for the likes of the radio- and tv-stations (bands such as nickelback), people who totally sell their souls to the music-industry......NONE of the bands you mentioned did that...(not even Metallica, because getting success by changing up the style of the music doesn't always mean that the band sould out or got mainstream! Metallica for example never did that, the simply liked to try something new)

Nu Metal? Really, this proofes that don't know shit about that.....first: when Metallica became popular there was no music that was called "Nu Metal" and NO, Nu Metal is also not stuff like Burn My Eyes by Machine Head or Demanufacture by Fear Factory......

and the second: Metallica did NEVER play NU Metal, NEVER! you can maybe call it alternative metal or something like that (those subgenres are stupid anyway) Nu Metal is KoRn, Limp Bizkit - but NOT Metallica

j mean come on....their work in the 90's still has so much passion behind it,...they didn't just follow the mainstream, compare it to Nickelback or 3 Doors Down and you know what i mean....

Like I Said...changing the musical style does not mean that a band got mainstream!

Yeah, you got a point, alternative metal then. Their 'latter' work was influenced by bands like Alice in Chains.

And Nu Metal has been around since about 1993.

And yes, Fear Factory is Industrial/Groove.

Nickelback and 3 Doors Down don't count here as mainstream because they aren't even metal in the first place. Mainstream bands that do count are the other bands you mentioned, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Disturbed, Coal Chamber.
