I was 16 when the tornado hit Cabot. I heard it jump over our school. Buildings on both sides were destroyed when the tornado jumped over the school cluster of Elem., Jr., and Sr. High schools. The buses in the lot in the middle of the schools were not damaged and took us home. The apt. bldgs with the outside wall missing or the store fronts standing, only to realize later the back half of the stores were missing. Strangest-grass stalks sticking out of wooden fence posts.
I was there when Cabot got hit in 1976. There were actually three that went on to form an F5 tornado, which completely wiped out the town. I was a child then, my brother and I walked back from school with an adult neighbour through the debris worried that our family had been killed that day. It was like nothing I have ever experienced before. I lost a good friend that day, and once you survive one of these tornadoes your life is never the same
Sometimes, NWS Offices dont have spotters, like my NWS Office, I am the only spotter in the entire area. So they need to issue tornado warnings based on Doppler Radar.
I saw the same thing on a TV Special from 1979. The exact same footage.

Looks like Storm Spooters are better than the actual doppler radaar..why do they use radar when they can use spotters
