The writing of the first movie seems so terrible but Lucas says he was trying to emulate the old serials.

And we all know most movies are written this way, with the actors improvising most of the great dialogue.

Nevertheless, New Hope remains a great movie.

Most Starwars fans have a sense of humour. There are lot of people who only mock what they love. Mel Brooks loves Starwars. That's the only reason he did Spaceballs. It takes a long time to do a good spoof or parody. And sometimes it's a lot more fun to mock something you love.

I agree - it is a lot more fun. It's also a lot more difficult to riff on a "good" movie - because it's so good. It's so much easier to riff on a corny B movie.

Only Riff masters like Mike, Kevin and Bill can take on the challenge of riffing great movies and not only hugely entertain, but make it look easy. :-)

It can be more difficult but lot of movies, even good ones have lots of silly stuff that is riffable. I love that they just chuckle and imitate Luke's "power converter" whine.

The Bourne Identity was excellent but there was a really silly French cafe with stereotypical music and guys speaking the funniest over the top french. I never noticed it before but when the rifftrax put me in the right mindset, I picked up on it and laughed before they even made a mention of it.

It's also pretty funny when they will do things like take people's mannerisms and facial expressions and reinterpret them in a humorous way to mean something different than they normally do in the film. This was done in the Dark Knight's rifftrax where Harvey is looking around nervously but not saying anything. In the Bourne Identity they reinterpreted Marie's tired huff when they stop and also a large number of Bourne's confused amnesia looks. It is difficult to do it really well though.
