  • I have a reel that has not been used yet. It has been in the box for one year. Should I do basic lubrication before bringing it out? Or can I leave it alone and just start to fish?

  • @isaacyoung2014 To be honest, many reels sit on the shelves for a year or two because there is always a time delay between manufacturing and distributing. You could check it just to make sure, but it's probably ready to go fishing if it is still new in the box!

  • If it is submerged in fresh water, is it necessary to open it up and clean it? Cause I have had my spinning reel fall in a pond every now and then. I thought it was only saltwater that made it so it had to be completely opened up?

  • @woodsboy22 Moving parts and water never mix, no matter what the directions say. Bearings need oil and gears need grease. Open it up and check. Water will eventually rust the internal parts, but if it's dry and everything looks good, then keep on fishing!

  • How do you know when to clean the handle side of the reel? I just bought a Shimano Coriolis 100GA (my first baitcaster). I did not use it last season, but plan on taking it out this season. The manual states for maintenance, but I don't know when to clean the handle side. Should I just do the basic lubing before I go out? Or since it hasn't been used I can just start using it? Also, when should you clean the handle side of the reel?

  • @woodsboy22 Many companies prefer once a year, but many people rarely ever open them up and clean them if the reel hasn't been submerged in freshwater or saltwater. Reels are made to last years and years if you make sure they are clean and oiled/greased. It all depends on how much you use it and if the reel gets submerged in water.

  • great video very helpful but how often does this need to be done on a baitcaster? thanks

  • @pizzacrustcrumbs98 Basic cleaning and oiling should be done at least once a year, but more if the reel is submerged in water. If you're hard on your equipment, every few months coudl be an option too. It just depends on how much you fish and what kind of weather you fish in. Keep it clean and oiled and you'll be good to go for years.

  • Nice vid! i just oiled my curado to get ready fpr spring bass fishing!

  • @MrNitrorcx Good to hear! I can't wait for Spring myself!

  • great video bro-shimano all the way!

  • Ardent reel kleen works wonders for cleaning reels.Should try it

  • great job! you taught me how fo sho!! thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @originalvalleykid thanks for watching!

  • hey great video man, you dumbed it down for me and showed all the steps, other videos have been very confusing and didnt really show us how to do it, but when you oil the center and lip of the breaking cover will that make the latch for it turn easier? cuz when i need to change my vbs breaks my latch is hard to turn, please and thank you!

  • wat the different oiling the shaft and the pining gear

  • @the301crew What? lol

  • does this work for all reels or a majority

  • @goatkiller68 You can clean all reels the same, but not all companies produce identical reels. Use what you can from the video.

  • i need help! my spool wont spin. like when i click the thumb release it works fine but when i spin the handle, the handle spins but the spool doesnt, and he thumb relese doesnt go up. so i manually have to click it up..whts wrong with it??

  • we all here like to used PE braid. we can cast smooth and long cast distance

  • hi do you ahve any idea how to service a Abu Revo?

  • @TheLeondewit I haven't serviced a Revo, sorry.

  • @TheLeondewit I haven't serviced a Revo, sorry.

  • Can you use Wd 40?

  • @PS3KICKSXBOX I have heard that people successfully use WD40, but mainly for saltwater applications. Also, WD40 stands for "water displacement"....you would still need to lube your reel with a "proper" oil like Shimano's Bantam Oil or Quantum's Hot Sauce to have maximum protection.

  • @BassinNW I have a Pinnacle vision Slyder,I got it from my brother brand new but out of the package with out any oil?or instructions.Could you tell me how to clean one of those?

  • @PS3KICKSXBOX ive got the exact same reel and just follow the same instructions as BassinNW gives.

  • how often does a reel have to be cleaned and oiled?

  • Thanks for the video! Just got a Shimano Citica (my first ever baitcasting reel) and it's been awesome using it, although I still lack the skills in regards to casting.

Glad that I have access to such great tutorials in regards to keeping my reel clean and efficient.

  • @sociologyperiod5 You're welcome! Hope it helps you....but Shimano also recommend you send it in to them once a year. I think I paid $15 and they did a complete checkup, and even replaced a bearing without charging me.

    Great company...and I'm sure you'll love the reel :)

  • @BassinNW ..bro , where the braid?

  • @peacockbass78 Don't need braid. Fluoro is where it's at up here.

  • very helpful

  • Great vid...I had my done at a tackle shop, just a little unsure about it...THANK YOU...will save money ...

  • @fishnman1000 You're welcome! Hope it helps :)

  • Great video dude!! I have 4 Shimano baitcasting reels and 3 Shimano spinning reels and I love them! They're the best fishing reels you can purchase anywhere. I live by the Laguna Madre so I'm a saltwater fisherman so I have to clean my reels a lot more than other people but awesome video and happy fishing!

  • @2111redman Awesome redman! Yeah, you certainly have more maintenance that us freshwater guys...but it's good to hear you take care of your gear!

Take care and be safe out there!

  • anyone know how to open up a daiwa zillion?

  • Thanks for the Video. This and the other one with the Shimano tech were very helpful.

Neither of you talk about the worm gear for the level wind though, and I feel this is the part of the reel that gets the dirtiest.

Do you know how to clean that? Do you take it out completely, or just clean from exterior?

Have you ever completely taken a reel apart and soaked it in water and dish soap or anything to get all of the gunk out?

  • @scottmcwallflower Thanks for your reply. This is by no means a detailed cleaning video, but many acquaintances have used toothbrushes and chemical solvents to get those "nasty" parts clean.

I just sent in my Citica for a complete cleaning and service and couldn't have been happier with Shimano's service and return time.

They even replaced a bearing at no charge - With service like this, I would rather skip the time consuming process. But some people really enjoy these sort of things.

  • Obviously, I will avoid any part I disagree with. The only reason I was commenting was because you said you were just following the instructions from Shimano. There is a Shimano Tech on youtube that has a tutorial that specifically says not to put ANY oil in the pinion gear. I am nothing close to an expert on this topic so that is why I am watching these clips. Just thought I would pass along the info. Check out the tutorial for yourself- Shimano Reel Maintenance Part 1 on Youtube

  • @JoeLaconte You bet. No big deal to me, because I'm not putting oil "into" the pinion gear; it was a thin film across the teeth. The reason you aren't supposed to put oil into it is because you don't want any on the spool shaft.

In my video, oil still doesn't reach the spool shaft. I think you'll understand my approach now. Have a good day my friend.

  • A shimano tech said not to put any oil in the pinion gear. Only use a Qtip with alcohol on it to clean. The tutorial is on Youtube.

  • @JoeLaconte Making sure the pinion gear is clean is the most important part . If you like, avoid any part of the video you dont agree with.

  • You don't add a drop of oil to the bearing under the casting control knob?

  • @JoeLaconte This video was done by following Shimano's user end guideline...but yes, you can clean the inside of the cast control knob and place one drop of oil on the shim.

  • O well I have a caenan so I'll just oil

  • Could I put reel lub the chunky stuff not oily stuff on the main shaft on top of the oil?

  • @fishingdaybyday If I understand you correctly, I wouldn't. The "thick" grease is mainly for the gears. If your manufacturer recommends it though, follow their procedure.

  • Great work.

  • @jobu88 Thanks jobu.

  • YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!!

I have a citica and i forgot to wash it since my last saltwater outing and it was clunky and it wasnt working wekk and i used this video and its good as new THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

  • @TheHellraiserDLX You're welcome, glad it helped!

  • Video is helpful....get rid of the background music! It makes it hard to hear what your saying!

  • @Plitski WIll take note...thanks Plitski.

  • how often do you have to oil the spool like every time you put on new line or wat.

  • @8zatz8 Nope, if you fish periodically without getting your reel wet or dirty, once a season might suit your needs.

If you are more active, and your reel is constantly in the elements, you may need to clean and oil 2-3 times a season.

Alltogether though, Shimano recommends you send the reel in once a year for complete service. More info can be found on their website for that.

  • @BassinNW thanks like the video by the way

  • First of all good video I just found a shimano CU-200 rod and reel in a local lake hahaha started cleaning it and the brake system side is jammed i can't open it "yet" which brought me to your video i started this acc to ask you what song is playing in the background it sounds like tom petty if it is i dont have it in my itunes ha would you mind letting me know? also diggin the Hat bud Keep on rippin lips!!

  • @BigBite1987 Hi BigBite, the music credits are at the end of the video. Richie Reinholdt is the artist, who releases his music through Creative Commons. It's not Tom Petty, but some of his music certainly sounds like Tom.

You can skip to 9:15 if you would like to see the music credit. Thanks.

  • @BassinNW hey thanks bud!

  • Great video very intuitive.. RippnLipz daily

  • LOL!!! Today I was like, "I should probably clean / oil my Citica, i wonder if I can find a video to show me how to do it properly." Voila, c'est un video qui la montrer.

  • @Shkerks Awesome, hope you found it helpful.

  • @harikarthikeyan Hey there, I have contacted Shimano about your question. I have told them about your particular situation, so I will forward the best information possible as soon as Shimano writes me back. We'll make sure your reel is taken care of the right way ;)

  • @harikarthikeyan Just received a response back from Shimano; they recommend you get your reel serviced once a season, especially since you are using your equipment for saltwater.

    Hope this helps!

  • @BassinNW thank you buddy.. ur awesome

  • dude go to one. i started at one it cast a country mile :). whatever u do dont attempt zero haha bad idea

  • shimano best reel out there, you cant go wrong with them... trust me I know! thanks for the vid now I can clean my BABY 200E5

  • nice reel man

  • thanks for this it was extremely helpful from all of the stuff you need to the step by step instructions. it would be awesome if you could do one the entire reel like the gears and handle and also one for a spinning reel. thanks again.

  • @sambf12 Your welcom Sam. Like I said in the video, I will be doing another video explaining the other side of the reel. Thanks.

  • @BassinNW awesome much appreciated. i'm looking forward to it..

  • Thanks for making this video!! I just got the 200E. Great information!!

  • @jbnine Awesome, enjoy the reel!

  • nice man. i have a abu garcia revo s and when i opened it to take the spool out there was this oily/greasy greyish stuff on the spool shaft. Its been like this since i bought it and I was just wondering if you knew what that was. I think its supposed to be there but just let me know if you know. Thank You and nice video. It was really helpful because i fish saltwater stripers and need to keep it clean

  • @aaabball415 Hey aaa, I've never owned a Revo, but this actually sounds like the grease is meant to be on the spool shaft.

Usually, when you see a load of grease like that, it's meant to be a barrier to keep water from getting in.

Without having one myself, I can't say for sure, but maybe other REVO owners will post what they find as well? You could always try calling Abu themselves to see if that's normal with your model, just to make sure!

  • Buddy all i have to say is THIS IS AWESOME ....... Liked every part of what was said and done .. Amazing video clarity ..... Will be waiting for ur next video on cleaning the handle part of it .. just wanted to ask you what alcohol is that which was used to clean the reel .. sorry asking you because here in India its hard to find something related to fishing .. Thank you once again for an amazing clip ..

  • @harikarthikeyan Thanks, I am very happy that a lot of people are learning how to keep their reel clean.

I used 70% Isopropyl Alcohol, which can usually be found at almost any grocery, or drug store. (Also known as rubbing alcohol)

Good luck out on the water harikarthikeyan!

  • im asking for this for my birthday, but i dont under stand the braking sysytem. can you either do a video about it or message me?

  • @BassAnglerMike33

Hey there, I would be glad to answer any questions that you may have. To make it easy for you, the brakes spin against the inside rim, which causes friction and allows the spool to slow down.

With a baitcaster, you'll notice that the spool can continue spinning, even when your lure has hit the water. This causes your line to get "backlashed".

So, the brakes are there to help slow down your spool and to help you avoid getting backlashed. Message me if you have ?s.

  • @BassinNW yeah ik about the baitcaster like ive used one many times but can you maybe make a vid like explaining how to use the system with the orange teeth and all that?

  • @BassAnglerMike33 Mike, I can certainly make a vid. It will probably be quite short since there isn't a whole lot to say, but there are a couple keys to using the system properly.

I have a couple days off at the end of the week, so I'll try and get one up this weekend.

Thanks for the question, and good luck out on the water. Oh, and I like the new gear that you just picked up too!

  • @BassinNW i really appreicate it man stay tuned to my channel cause i just orderd lures from tacklewarehouse ill be making a vid of that thanks again good fishin

  • nice video man was very helpful thx

  • @addassas Thanks addassas, take care.

  • if im fishing saltwater with a reel like this(abu garcia revo s), how often should i clean it?

  • @aaabball415 I would wipe the reel down as often as possible, but you really only need to oil it once a season. If for some reason you submerged the reel, then you would probabyl want to open it and make sure it's clean, but once a year should be just fine.

  • @BassinNW ok thanks

  • how frequent do you clean your reel... i heard its only once every season ..??? but then others told me its after everytime you fishh plz someone reply to this i recently made a huge purchase on a shimano curado i love it and so i want it to last!! lol i also have a citica

  • @gonbakim You don't need to clean and oil the reel after every trip. I have done this once a year, and have had great success. If you fish saltwater, you may want to clean your gear more, but if you're just fishing freshwater, you should be good with your annual cleaning and oiling.

  • Cool vid man... I sell a fishing reel cleaning service on ebay... You did a aight job and cool vid

  • @Graphicspittz187 Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to comment. You've got a cool channel yourself, ever do any fishing videos?

  • @BassinNW Yea look at my other channel TeamRippnLipz1

  • @Graphicspittz187 Haha thats me!

  • @Graphicspittz187 Me again..

  • hey i have the same reel do i have to use that alcohol if so any alternatives thanks

  • @hobiefishn I suggest using Isopropyl alcohol because you can get it at most grocery stores, and drug stores.

If you are set against purchasing it, I would suggest a mildly damp rag with a very small drop of dish soap. You could always wipe it down with just water, but the alcohol dries quickly and helps capture the dirt.

    Good luck hobie!

  • hey mate, i have just gotten myself a new fishing rod but just a cheapo as it is my first one. i have a problem that when ever i cast it, the line all tangles and i have to re line it all. i thort maybe the line was put on wrong so i put all new line on it but still have the same problem i was wondering if you would know other possibilities of why it would happen but bearing in mind it was only a cheap $35 one

  • @427manaro it actually sounds like you are get a backlash. The spool will keep spinning after your bait has hit the water, unlike a spinning reel. You need to use your thumb to stop the spool so that the line doesn't keep going out. It will happen a lot when your learning, but as you use it it will stop. check out "how to cast a bait casting reel" by monkeyseevideos. That one helped me learn when i started

  • @427manaro Actually, Rangerfox is right. First, you could be overspooling your line. Second, it sounds like you are "backlashing" your reel. This happens because you're not controlling the spool with your thumb.

If the spool is allowed to keep spinning, your lure hits the water and your line keeps rolling. This creates a backlash, and causes most beginners problems.

Search "how to cast a baitcaster". I might even try to do a video this weekend that could help you out as well.

  • Thanks for the video, just did one baitcaster so far, gotta keep them running smooth and looking good. Thanks again!

  • @dropshot35 You're welcom dropshot, hope it helped. Thanks for commenting.

  • great video man! thumbs up

  • @TheCrickHicks Thanks CrickHicks, I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Take care.

  • @BassinNW no problem man! it was great video! my reel was made in 1997 and hasn't been oiled since.....my grandmother got it at a convention in 97 and gave it to me 5 years ago. that thing means more than any reel iv ever had in my life and i want to keep it running!
