I remember once, on some show, he did the pigeon out of the bag, and 300 feathers came flying out. He said, "Oh, dear." looked inside and made the bag disappear, my dad and I got asthma, we laughed so hard.
I first saw him do this act on Mark Wilson's MAGIC CIRCUS. Before that, I knew him only as Torpedoman Gruber, the resident con artist of PT 73, on re-runs of MCHALE'S NAVY.
I found him hilarious as a kid, then. And, I still do so, now.
To paraphrase Jimmy Durante: "RIP, Mr. Ballantine, wherever you are."
I wish we had more of Carl's work somewhere to watch. In my opinion, he's one of the most creative, funny people ever to grace a stage. It was always atreat to see him on Sullivan, or some other show of the day. I wish Lenno's people would put him on some time.
I saw him in Las Vegas years ago and it was very funny. Nice Memory.

Great comedy routine. A bit lost on the kids in the audience though it seemed. They wanted that rabbit.
But he got humor, stage persona and creativity by the boundles. I loved it ^^

Loved the high hokum of his act, as when he lighted a match, put it into a bowl of water, and proudly announced "A swimming match!"

Carl is a wonderful friend. He is always gracious, kind and funny. He lent his voice to me for a marionette act I produced.
He is the greatest performer of all time.

I think this was part of a Cosby Show episode and the kids' reactions was part of the joke--but I haven't seen the episode so I don't know for sure.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Carl Ballantine at a supermarket and the racetrack. He's a treasure, both in show business and real life.
