I found this tutorial very nice despite the major flaw i have spotted (from my opinion). Starting from the positive elements i must accept the good intention of the creator who encourages the viewers into manual aiming. I must also mention that the tutorial is making things much more easier because it separates the process of manual aiming into steps. The flaw i spotted is that the step of AOB is insufficient. There should be more explanation about the nature of AOB and the usage of protractor
Like i said further down the comments, all the other options are on to help show those who dont know how to, to use the TDC. Its also says in the video description "Guide for manual aim - Baisc". So stop trolling and trying to cause grief, because anyone trying to do so will have their comments removed and placed in the bin of "epic faildom". έχετε μια καλημέρα.
@onecheman If you look carefully the option "Manual Aim" Is selected. The whole point in the video is to show you how, i have unchecked everything else to help show you (Map contacts, no duds ect).
Dont attack something without checking what your attacking "onecheman"!
@cubs197 Yes. This is not a required step, its more of a professional step. However, i am pretty sure you can do crew setup, not unless they have done away with that feature.
@QuantumQuacks i know you can do it in the periscope view (not sure which periscope or both) not sure about the binocular view either. lock onto your target (the picture taking icon on the far right side of those available will light up, meaning it's available to use) click the picture taking icon, done.
@sandamn, you have to take seperate distance measurements with a fairly accurate aob, So take one, 3 minutes or so take another, then the game will guestimate for you.
@thebestpioltever Agreed, the reduced quality of the video does make the pinging louder and horrible. Unfortunatly, i have had to leave it as i have lost the original.
@12ock It is possible but unlikely. If you are lucky enough to hit the weapons cache in the a sweet spot... it is possible. May take awhile for the ship to sink though.
Torpedos reload very slowly in "real mode. Try to change that setup to fast loading. And, of course, check your submarine is not in silent mode. When silent mode, the crew won´t load torpedos.
Sweet video man! Thanks for taking the time to do this, I just discovered this game and I love it. Though the lack of definite instructions on how to do stuff like this was hard to get around. Thanks for helping out. P.S. Ignore these sonar sound guys LOL
i still don`t know when im measuring that do i have to pause game movement and then measure or let ship moving cause what if ship passes in front of me and im still measuring??
P.S IDK how to measure speed, height nad angle on map....
Angle On Bow, try using the auto aim to figure out the actual AOB, then use the protractor and other tools to try out different possibility's until you get the same result as the computer did
The video was good, but it would be nice if the pinging wasn't 4 times louder than your narration. When I'm watching a tutorial its rather unpleasant to be startled.
Just got done with the tutorial you gave me and OMG you are amazing thank you for all the help I had been trying to figure out the manual aming for ages and have not done a good job at it. I must say that was great work you did and I applaud you.
i have not even tried manual aiming yet it is a challenge i want to try. But i have SH4 gold/u boat and the torpedo training section is missing! you make it look easy mate.
your video helped me to remember how to fire manually again. The beauty of the game is aiming manually indeed even though i believe that the real challenge is not to fire manually but to position yourself in the right place, without been noticed.
Great Video! Good explain. I have my Silent Hunter since yesterday and when I watched you're video i made excelent manual aim in seccond try :O Thanks!
Question. As the guy in this video was able to do, how do u get the picture in picture feature that shows the subs bow aspect firing the torpedoes, just like in this video. also when u select the camera feature, how do you get the camera to scroll in close to see the missile striking the target? I did what he did in this video and it still doesnt let me zoom in or out to see th ship up close. Does anyone know?
The picture in picture thing is the event camera, you have to unclick it in the realistic menu. You can get the outside camera by doing two things, you need to make sure it is unclicked in the realistic menu and then you hit the camera looking button in your sub and hit the first camera looking button inside that menu.
Now when I'm playing it, I can't set nothing on the right upper menu (there's no button like in your video) (attack scope), I just look at the map, just right/left a bit and fire... :(
The most f-cked up thing now is AOB cause i don't have any idea at all how to get it... I can use the tool to get the bearing, but I don't know how to put it in..
Unfotunatly AOB is a long process to explain on here, however i have xfire and will explain on that if you want xfire - 101ice101.
Just imagine that the dial for AOB is what the enemy ship would look like from birds eyeview and base it according to where your sub is pointing and adjust it accordingly.
I Have SH4: wolves of the pacific so I don't know if this applies to you, but you can do non manual targeting by going onto the main menu and click options, gameplay, and make sure the Manual Targeting System is NOT selected. Then all you have to do is go to the attack periscope lock on to your target and fire! This manual tells us how to use the TDC manually so we can challenge ourselves.
There is a proper way of determining speed rather than 'just guessing'.
Im not sure exactly how you do it, but you mark the position of the boat every 3minutes and 15 seconds I think, at least three times. Then you measure the difference between all the markings and that gives you the speed in knots somehow...
Again im not 100% sure on it, but there is a proper way of determining targets speed, and I think a.o.b. that don't involve guess work ;)
Yup that is correct. It states in the video in writing that you can do this more accuratly using the protractor ect. However that would be in the advanced version of the manual aim tutorial. This was a basic tutorial to help the newcommers. it is still a very handy video.
hey nice tutorial...it works for one ship perfectly- but when it comes down to attacking convoys- i have minimal success(and when i do its luck) can u give me some tips? i know it has something to do with spread angle of the torpedoes- but is it actually so much guessing after you target the first ship?
When it comes to convoys, the best trick is to work quick but you need to identify all the ships you want to target and send all data to the TDC... Once done make sure you engage the posistion keeper and move onto another ship.
And then do the same... This should save all data onto the TDC. Now if you can do all this quick and the convoy has not changed course you then fire a select number of torps at each ship... if you think they have change bearing or course... you must then do a quick check of all data and then fire.
Or if you want to use spread... it then becomes luck and partial skill. The best way i find is to aim at the lead vessel, set the spread to "behind" the target whilst they are a perfect medium range 90 degree angle from you. This means the lead ship takes a torp and then the rest hit and miss the following ships. I prefure to target each one manual and then fire most in one go.
very nice tutorial..but when u made all of the measurements and took the last distance(HEIGHT)measurement- when are you supposed to fire? RIGHT after that measurements? or is there a point till which i have to wait? ( because in manual aim there is no GREEN triangle saying its OK to LAUNCH)....
That wont work so well because of the idea when you use a fixed exe or mounted file, the game activates his security mode and you will have flat crewmembers and they are yelling all sort of numbers
will i downloaded this game before but my damn pc couldnt work it so i downloaded III and i love it so much , i wanted to thank u for the video i accutly get some hints 2 use in SHIII but about calculating speed i got the speed = distance / time but i dont understand what u mean by counting speed by eye can u explane plz ? ty again :)
will some1 pls help me? i just got the game, and if im using auto lock or manual, my torpedoes just whont fire. i've followed every step in this manual to the letter and when i hit the fire button nothing happens at all, i've also tried opening the tubes first and they either dont open, or the torps dont fire anyway. i dunno what to do, pls help, thanks
Determining speed by "guessing" isn't really a good system. If you take a range reading, wait a minte and take another one (sending both to TDC) you can use those readings to have the system calculate the speed by pressing the little button with the watch in it. The reading also gives you the course, which you can use to calculate the AOB more precisely.
However i encourage everyone use's the techniques thats works best for them... I personaly dont have any need to use the crosshairs or speed button to measure speed... i can do it all by eye.
Missions are not exactly timed, but the longer you take the more chance of you missing "ideal moment".
When it comes to being spotted.... it depends on what spots you.
Battleships cant really do damage to you when your under the surface. They may shoot there cannons at you if they can see you, but staying submerged tends to deal with them.
However when it comes to destoyers... its a whole new ball game. You will have to dive deep, to critical levels. As well as lower the sound you make.
speed = Distance / time. so if u use your ship manual to see which type of ship you are looking at you can find its length in meters. if you then put the periscope crosshair in front of the ship and use the stopwatch to time how long it takes for the ship to move until its back is touching the periscope crosshair. that will give you the distance (ship length) / time (seconds). you then times the result by 0.5 to get the speed in knots.
Since the release of this video, Ubisoft released a patch where you can get the speed a vessel. I personaly dont use this function as i have found it to be unaccurate and not versatile.
"The player can now request a speed estimate on a target as long as he has recently sent at least two range+bearing data sets. Keep in mind that the estimate needs to be sent to the TDC to be taken into account for the shot"
This function can be found on your interactive hud.
sometimes front sometimes behind, i really followed it all but always miss the target, and what i really find hard to understand is the angle thing i almost guess it , and the ship moves very fast!
All measurements need adjusting when the target changes its position.
* Are you locking on to the target?
* Are you staying at periscope depth?
* Are you setting your torp speed to 12 knots?
* Are you firing before the target crosses your bow (if not the A.O.B. Changes and you will have to either adjust it according the map or try agin before the ship moves across your bow).
I will try to give you a easy to read example of reading A.O.B.... But i need a graphics program as my Paint and photoshop have literatly dissapeared from my system. But il try to find one. You got a email address?
Also darklights please make sure you diffilculty settings are set to manual aim and also check you video step by step to make sure you have done it all right... Please bare in mind that when you decide to try again you have to be fairly quick using this setup.
No its not a problem, the vid was supposed to aid on "how to" but not why which is what im working on atm the moment, but i suppose i can push it forward a little early if you like. Pratice in the meantime and il release a full packege very soon on ALL aspects.
when i fire its too late the torpedo goes straight and the ship passes it i dont know whether to turn the sub to face the target or is it another setting...[Thanks for the video]
Awesome video, thanks very much for your assistance and time - i'm new to the SH series and Ubisoft didn't exactly go overboard (no pun intended) to help us newbies out. Kudos to people like yourself who are doing their job for them. I'd watch more if you make em... :)

Determining speed by "guessing" isn't really a good system. If you take a range reading, wait a minte and take another one (sending both to TDC) you can use those readings to have the system calculate the speed by pressing the little button with the watch in it.
As well as lower the sound you make.
babalonkie 3 years ago
Also, you will have to turn and try to dodge the incoming depth charges, you can do this by cleverly manouvering.
babalonkie 3 years ago
There are many tactics you can use, so many i cant list them all. You even have decoy lunchers which help when combined with other manouvers.

awsome sounds like a game worth getting
and i can see myself wasting a lot of torpedos missing the targets lol
qx192000 3 years ago
Even pros will miss now and then... the boats can sometime move unexpectadly.
However if all else fails... you can turn on auto aim... which makes things a bit easier.

i did everythink like you and i still can't fire

awesome video dude. I got this game a week agow and i suck! this video has helped :-D
one question: whats that thing at 6:58 and what does it do?
graham1002 4 years ago
That it is the radar... not very helpfull in this scenario, but very good at detecting large ships and aircraft whilst on the surface.

coool. thanks

speed = Distance / time. so if u use your ship manual to see which type of ship you are looking at you can find its length in meters. if you then put the periscope crosshair in front of the ship and use the stopwatch to time how long it takes for the ship to move until its back is touching the periscope crosshair. that will give you the distance (ship length) / time (seconds). you then times the result by 0.5 to get the speed in knots.

i'm not familiar with knots, and wat's tdc?
jae931 4 years ago
Since the release of this video, Ubisoft released a patch where you can get the speed a vessel. I personaly dont use this function as i have found it to be unaccurate and not versatile.
"The player can now request a speed estimate on a target as long as he has recently sent at least two range+bearing data sets. Keep in mind that the estimate needs to be sent to the TDC to be taken into account for the shot"
This function can be found on your interactive hud.
babalonkie 4 years ago
TDC = Target Data Computer.
Knotts = Units to measure speed of water vessels.
babalonkie 4 years ago
But guessing the speed by eye may actualy be more accurate.
Heres some speeds.
All ships in a convey not alert to your presence will be travelling at around 6-9 knotts.
When alerted to your presence, Battleships ad carriers wont go much faster than the above speed.
Cruisers and escorts will go around 9-12 when alertted. But when an escort directly attacks you, it will go at a even faster speed 12-16 Knotts.

One question/ how do u know their speed?>

Do you guys have your voloume on max or something lol I have 5.1 sorround sound and its not that loud.
I suggest viewers not to turn the sound up to max lol
babalonkie 4 years ago
it's just that the video is mostly quiet, and then the pinging is sudden and highly annoying.
masterc713 4 years ago
Woah, that pinging just about blew my eardrums

sometimes front sometimes behind, i really followed it all but always miss the target, and what i really find hard to understand is the angle thing i almost guess it , and the ship moves very fast!
DarkLightss 4 years ago
All measurements need adjusting when the target changes its position.
* Are you locking on to the target?
* Are you staying at periscope depth?
* Are you setting your torp speed to 12 knots?
* Are you firing before the target crosses your bow (if not the A.O.B. Changes and you will have to either adjust it according the map or try agin before the ship moves across your bow).
babalonkie 4 years ago
I will try to give you a easy to read example of reading A.O.B.... But i need a graphics program as my Paint and photoshop have literatly dissapeared from my system. But il try to find one. You got a email address?
babalonkie 4 years ago
Also darklights please make sure you diffilculty settings are set to manual aim and also check you video step by step to make sure you have done it all right... Please bare in mind that when you decide to try again you have to be fairly quick using this setup.
babalonkie 4 years ago
its actually set to manually , i can easily hit the ship with auto targeting but never in manual lol, ur right u have to be quick it moves very fast
DarkLightss 4 years ago
dont want u to get into any more work man , this vid is more than enough but i guess i have a prob understanding how it works....
DarkLightss 4 years ago
No its not a problem, the vid was supposed to aid on "how to" but not why which is what im working on atm the moment, but i suppose i can push it forward a little early if you like. Pratice in the meantime and il release a full packege very soon on ALL aspects.
babalonkie 4 years ago
Thanks, Keep it up!
DarkLightss 4 years ago
when i fire its too late the torpedo goes straight and the ship passes it i dont know whether to turn the sub to face the target or is it another setting...[Thanks for the video]
DarkLightss 4 years ago

Awesome video, thanks very much for your assistance and time - i'm new to the SH series and Ubisoft didn't exactly go overboard (no pun intended) to help us newbies out. Kudos to people like yourself who are doing their job for them. I'd watch more if you make em... :)
