  • Hey everyone! Shut up and listen! Derek is speaking volumes. My favorite musician of all-time next to Jerry Garcia (just for the sheer joy and creativity).

  • Fingers....strings.....magic. "It has wires that vibrate and give forth music...." Rush 2112

  • This is moving

  • Angelic stoicism that is spontaneous blues combustion!!!

  • 4:26 Warren is shitting himself

  • @EnforcerFX- yes sir!

  • You just have to listen this while you're getting high

  • Comment removed

  • @13Musicmachine.....u suck....seen you....u don't even qualify to be genrealized...fucken egotistical musicians anyways...there the ones that ruin it for every other hardworkin musician

  • @theatlantisrise hey,I'm 14 years old , and I'm a touring , performing blues guitarist/ singer , my band is the youngest ever to play at Massey Hall in Toronto Canada , and in both the Rainbow Grill on Sinset strip in Hollwood , and the Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood ! Most of my favorite music is blues and I taught my dad about blues music , so please don't generalise me with every other twat out there , thank you , good day !

  • @13Musicmachine son,you may play a style of music that might be considered blues, but at 14 you haven't lived enough to understand the blues,it hasn't bitten you to the soul or driven you to the edge. you're kinda like a priest talking about marriage you know? there's a base of knowledge to work with but know real experience to draw from. i'm not blasting you or anything just saying it like it is. B.B. would tell you the same thing...

  • I hate when all these punk ass kids talk about "real" music and then lump Trucks in with all these third-rate heavy metal guys who can take credit for a couple of big riffs and blues players they've only heard of because they took a glance at their dad's vinyl. Those who really feel the soul in Derek's playing dont write hundreds of comments about their age and their "appreciation" of the blues.

  • Derek trucks and Joe Bonamassa are two best new generation guitarists.

  • Justin Bieber disliked this 15 times.

  • 15 people think lil wayne is a better guitar player than derek trucks

  • Its like you can almost see RJ, DA, SRV, JH, EH, JED looking down and smiling at Derek while he channels there energy into his guitar

  • some nights derek just feels like pouring his absolute soul into his solos. this night was one of them. and thank god its recorded so well.

  • I love a guitar player who lets the guitar tell the story. Derek isnt going to bob his head or do a dance for anyone instead he is going to show emotion through playing his guitar and nobody does it like him.

  • i dream of a blues g3 with derek trucks, joe bonamassa and philip sayce. it would be magic!!

  • Does anyone else hear hints of Frank Zappa in both Trucks and the band?

  • Absolutely!

  • This boy is chaneling the Sky Dog big time one and only to come even close to Duane period.

  • Wayne has so much class to step back and let Derek go. This song hasn't sounded this good since Duane developed this kind of cloud soaring. Gives me shivers. Pure emotion and feeling. Spectacular...

  • @dlawrick Warren Haynes...

  • @Pandolin11 Yup-thanks that was a typo...

  • sagittariusbaby0750 , it makes as much sense to complain about Derek not moving around as much as it would to complain that Michael Jordan couldn't play hockey. Derek is on a whole other plane than us, he is a bona fide genius and should be enjoyed with the ears.

  • Comment removed

  • @sagittariusbaby0750 he is just being the man

  • @sagittariusbaby0750 Your pretty bad at the whole listening thing aren't you...

  • I was at this show...and it changed the way I think about live music.

  • He gets a lot of crap for not singing. I guess singing with your fingers doesnt count. I hear that man sing every time he plays! He doesnt need to use his voice.

Plus, why sing (with your voice) when you can just let Mike Mattison do it?

  • Love the Allman Bros. esp. the original line up but current company bring it! Think Derek sounds better when he lays back.

  • What Love Means Baby we got nothing nothing but a dream now that my pockets are empty I guess well find out what love means what love means what love means We got only tomorrow and each others company I guess now well find out just what love means M.S. Morrison
  • amazing solo

  • amazing solo

  • I can't understand why Oteil Burbridge isn't given more of an opportunity to show off his skills on the bass. He's remarkable. And of course, Derek is probably the best slide player in the world-- at least up there with Ry Cooder and that's good company!

  • @4rainbowed

I saw the Bros. a few years back play the Pavilion in Cleveland - Oteil had an extended bass solo with no accompaniment, and at one point he started playing Little Martha... on bass! It was rad.

  • @reverendhooch OK, now I'm just jealous!!!

  • HOLY SHIT THIS IS BEYOND AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! I FEEL SO INSPIRED I WANT TO LEARN TO PLAY SO FREE, TOO!

  • i'm pretty sure he get's that "growl" by hitting the bottom 2-3 strings with his thumb as he's about to bring the slide back up to a note. If you watch, before he "rips" into a note, he'll drop the slide nearly all the way to the first fret, and then strikes those lower strings before coming back up to his intended note. I've tested it myself, and that's the only way I could do it. i could be wrong, though, lol.

  • Great to hear Derek play this classic and put his own stamp on it! And, yeah, he can totally make his guitar sing--Skydog would love what he's doing!!

  • The growl, I think is the natural break up on his vintage amp, which is cranked. Then as he hammers on those first opening notes he volume swells or tone and that just peaks slightly through the amp. Total science but mostly touch, ears and being brilliantly gifted.

  • @jak8eal

the growl is from hitting the lower notes with thumb like a rake

  • Does anyone know how Derek gets that growling sound on those first string bends? I think he might be hitting the low B string (in open E) and bending at the same time, but I'm not sure.

  • @SRVblueshero1 as jak8eal pointed out, he's using his volume knob to create that growling or "swelling" sound. basically, set the volume knob to around 2, fret a note or chord with your left hand (if you're right handed), then use your picking hand to swell the volume knob up to 9 or 10. the effect is pretty intense if the band is quiet. dickey betts used it at the beginning of "in memory of elizabeth reed" on the live at fillmore east album (1971).

  • grea playing

  • Sends chills up my spine.

This song hasn't sounded thius good since Duane played it.

  • i believe that derek is one of the premiere guitar players of his generation

  • This sounds kinda like the Inca Roads solo in terms of mood and chord structure. Zappa's lives on everywhere :)

  • @whitetowl I know completely what you mean.

  • Dereck trucks es un genio, tiene un sonido de guitarra slide fantastico!

  • Warren has some class in this one !! Per usual !

  • Saw these guys in New Hampshire last year tripping balls and I must say they still bring it no matter what all you yngwie talking bitching fighting dudes are talking about. One of the best shows I've ever experienced and I've seen alot!

  • ...please.

with all respect to musical styles and tastes of any predilection or label: you cannot compare the music of the Allmans to Sabbath...just find something you relate to and listen and learn. That being said -- it is a fairly defensible conclusion that one has a much wider learning base from the canon of the Allman Brothers Band.

And as Marley reiterated: "Judge not."

  • I actually saw this band in Pittsburgh last year... they were good. Food sucked, but the wine and music was good. Maybe I was just too drunk n st****, but I don't remember them playing this song.

  • sublime

  • warren's rhythm guitar also happens to be impeccable.

  • I hope you all have a great time arguing about musicians. Not to say it's bad, I just don't understand.

Really, I hope you're having a great time. I know I am, I'm drinking a little and listening to some beautiful sounds.

  • I swear, when he busts out that slide, my life is over.

  • This solo is a great tribute to Duane.

  • Thank's Derek! You are keeping the flame alive! Great Greag Allmann come back!

    Hope Mama "A" is allright!

Big fan from Argentina, whom lived a Daytona Beach for a while...

    Kind Regards

  • i love how derek wears a nice shirt when he knows he's being filmed for a DVD release... did that on songlines too... otherwise it's either a well worn t-shirt of that flannel he always wears.

  • Truck's playing is something instant;he doesn't have to wait long to win you over. You lose track from the first seconds he starts "dreaming".

  • what tuning is he using here?

  • @muzzleflash7: Derek always uses open E; regardless of the situation.

  • Man! The way he finger-picks every note is just amazing!

I wish I could do that!

  • I like it.........blues roots...

  • algrand90 -Where do assholes like you come from?? Did your mother have ANY children that lived??

  • repeat the same 5 notes, weak hippy shit.. :)) it's impressive how one person can contain so much ignorance..honestly derek is not only great , tehnical wise, far beyond any of the guitarists you ve mentioned, but the ideas he has and style is just fascinating...what music is all about for me ..

  • god i love derek trucks. such an awesome solo

  • guitgeo FUCK you very much for your participation :)

  • holy shit! i only just discovered derek was 24 when he did this, i though he was a lot older

  • Ry Cooder and Trucks are my 2 favorite electric slide guitarists

  • Is is just me or is it the heavy metal fans who can't appreciate the talent of Derek Trucks?.

I bet if you asked any one of those gys Rockystenlone 21 mentioned (kirk hammet, paul gilbert, yngwie malmsteen ) they would say Derek is a genius. Maybe not their style of music but they would recognize his musical genius as one musician to another.

  • I would say that rockystelone21 is probably a teenager not that far removed from his mother's tit. By his musical comments he is obviously very musically immature. Maybe he should listen to more than one no talent band.

  • The reincarnation thing has occured to me many times...

  • rockystelone21. look up more about this guy. he is such a smooth guitar player. watch the desdemona solo. ul piss ur pants

  • how would you describe smooth

  • He likely is the greatest slide player ever to live. rockystelone you need to continue to find more DTB to understand just how good he is.

  • Every 50 years a guitar player comes along with "the gift". He's the one! His playing just sucks you in and you become part of it. The last master to do this was Jimi.

  • Sorry dude, this is one of the few 'new' guys who can really preach throught their guitar.

  • uh... fail... Yngwie is a horrible musician... if you are one of the millions of people get sucked into that wanky guitar bullshit... be my guest and fuck off.

  • blind speed IS NOT good music for the simple sake of being complex.... Complex flurries of notes isn't always good.... sometimes slow soulful playing is more desirable...besides... any dildo can learn arpeggios...honest....its true....

  • yah that "Hippy Shit" is what gave birth to heavy metal, know your roots and dont post shit like that

  • not true. black sabbath gave birth to heavy metal.

  • and who do you think inspired Sabbath? the hippies that were inspired by blues players, it's a long cycle

  • what the fuck. how can you be inspired by other people when you are the first band to play a certain style of music? there werent really any hippies until 1965. i wouldnt even consider black sabbath a hippy band at all.

  • The hippies were an offshoot of the beatniks, which were an offshoot of the swing craze, etc.

  • @lespaul702 as a matter of fact black sabbath started out as a blues band. even a lot of their songs have a very bluesy style. sometimes jazzy.

  • @aznativethug as musicians black sabbath wouldn't qualify to carry Derek's or Warren's guitar case.

  • @Hoontasan no need to talk shit about a great band.the first 5 sabbath albums are classics.

  • @aznativethug just stating facts. You don't need to educate me on BS. I wouldn't put them in the great band category. They were a true original and a leader in heavy metal. But their music was simple in my view. Heck I could play every one of their songs on guitar when I was in high school back then. Playing ABB songs so they sound good was much more difficult if not impossible. They are in two totally different worlds.

  • @Hoontasan I love Sabbath but you are exactly right!!

  • @Hoontasan 2 different types of bands, Tony Iommi is a excellent guitarist, playing with finger that were chopped off

  • wrong , the beatles did. Without them we would not have the formula that carries on till today will almost every song in almost every genre.

Inface George Harrison is considered the godfather of heavy metal.

  • Wrong..The beatles stole every lick , mostly from the likes of Buck Owens. Buck's sound engineer would send the masters to abbey rd so the Beatles could here them, listen to "I feel fine" It's the intro to buckaroos

  • George loved Chet Atkins to death and said so as early as 1964.

  • @slutbunwallah fucking truth dude, without Beatles, no music...

  • @bati9rst that's a ridiculous statement. Music just wouldn't be the same, but we would still have music.

  • @Dethkill14 yes yes, but there are some bases in music...

  • @bati9rst True.

  • what gave birth to sabbath you dumb cunt?

  • thats like asking what gave birth to joe satriani

  • shredders without emotion or interesting concepts

  • If you think they are so badass, listen to them not this. I hate haters, man. This is god coming out of this guitar.

  • dude, Kirk doesn't know how to improvise at all, Paul is pretty good, Yngwie invented a style but he's no good outside of that style. Derek is a very special guitar player, nothing is better than a man that knows how to sing with his guitar. I don't know why you can't respect that.

  • @ChadizzleFoshizzle awesome dude... Derek is the only person outside of Roy Buchanan that I know that can actually sing with his guitar...Very good stuff indeed =P

  • @smotpoker86 ...as well as Jeff Beck.

  • @ChadizzleFoshizzle words of truth. golden.

  • @rockystelone21 I happen to love Paul gilbert and you are right now comparing the freshest of different fruits. Derek trucks sings and Paul Gilbert plays. What makes both of those players amazing is their unwavering dedication... I don't think one would take much pleasure in "killing" other...

Kirk Hammet however can eat a dick, and Yngwie... nuff said

  • @ConWenk wrong

  • true !

  • It is truly amazing. Derek has managed to gain the respect of everyone in the band. He is the youngest member by over 10 years and still has gained the attention and praise of Warren and Gregg. In "Statesbuorgho Blues" live At the Beacon Theatre, during his solo, Warren smiles at Gregg because Derek's solo is so amazing.

  • This guy errily looks like Duane. Duane died in 1971 and Derek was born in 1979. Hmm, so could Duane have come back? I'm not sayin, just sayin'.

Best slide player we've seen in a few generations. And maybe technically better than Duane.

He has both the technical chops, and the feel required.

  • @NewMexicoSunset that is retarded, derek looks nothing like duane... sounds like him, sort of, but looks nothing like him.

  • @NewMexicoSunset- as far as technically better than duane, you may have a point there, but you have to understand that duane was creating a genre on the fly whereas derek had his whole life to listen to duane, pick apart and reassemble the licks. so it's hard to make that comparison. we all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.

  • Very nice, thanks for posting this! 5 stars!

  • Beautiful guitar playing, but he should tuck his shirt in. Messy boy!

  • i saw derek trucks when we was playing w/ eric clapton in 07 at the boston garden. I had NO clue who derek was and after 20 minutes i completely forgot eric clapton was on that stage, my eyes were just glued to him haha.

  • his melodies are awesome!

  • I saw Derek when he was fifteen in Ft Worth in 1995...had no idea who he was....he played the blues like a son of a bitch...then I connected the name and it all made sense

  • I first saw Derek Trucks, in 1990-91 in Jacksonville, Fl where he grew up, playing at 12 years of age, at my sunday hang out called Wards Landing, and he was SO GOOD THEn, you just knew this young man was Duane Allman incarnate!!! He was just SO Freaking good Then!!!!

  • I'm a big fan of his wife too

  • When he plays you can feel that the music is coming from deep in his soul. I did see him smile at a few shows, it is usually when someone else in the band hits a really good riff be it Warren Haynes in the ABB or someone from the DTB

  • Yeah...Uncle...man uncle.....

Could the soul of D. Allman be in that boy?

  • I agree with bhumimanusha. I first thought that derek trucks was just someone that didn't show emotion while playing. However, if you take a closer look he looks like he's meditating and simply feeling out the tune getting all his notes from the heart. Now watching him play is almost as awesome as litening.

  • Amazing right hand technique

  • that's what she said.

  • if you're there on the show you could feel derek's energy, the way i see it is that he's in the state of mind similar to when someone meditates. he remains stable and conscious, the music flows through him, he is not a musician playing music, he is the music. he is every notes he plays.

  • Well, this is a LIVE video. There is a visual experience involved otherwise you wouldn't be on youtube.

  • Comment removed

  • unless youtube is the only place i could find this song, i could give two shits about his face, that makes no difference

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • Yellokatt- Jerry Douglas is incredible but he is a Dobro player. Why compare the two?

  • Comment removed

  • He's such a good player its a shame he doesn't show much emotion on his face. It makes it a bit harder to connect.

  • DITTO! LOL

  • @Rickman769 - he was young... as his confidence has increased he has become relatively more demonstrative on stage... it's about the music for him. when he first started he didn't even want to face the audience. the record company encouraged him to open up a bit from what i heard.

  • thank you derek trucks. beyond incredible.

  • Derek's an amazing musician.I first saw him with the Allmans back when he was still in his early teens. He already had HUGE chops, and has only gotten even better through the years. His pappa must be VERY proud.

  • The drummer Butch Trucks is not his father but rather his uncle.

  • I'll be listening to this dude Oct 10 B'ham!!

  • sounds like some of zappas mellow stuff. thats a big complement by the way

  • music is the best! i'm a huge zappa fan

  • btw Carlos was talkin of who he would 'hand the torch over to.' He started to say 'younger guitarists like Derek ... AND.. " but he never added another artist. I am with Carlos! Go ahead and have a hissy fit on me.. like you can retract what is.. with YOUR opinion.. I am with the guy who has the chops to call it.

  • still a favorite.. go y'all.. keep it goin! keep playin!

  • music ain"t a competition, Its just about the music! it ain"t whether the Redskins are better than the Cowboys! shit you kids spoil the vibe, in a my Dad"s bigger than your Dad scenario, grow up & enjoy the music! Music is art so is open to different views!!! enjoy.

  • but this is youtube, every video with music in it has to be criticized by youtubes resident musical snobs and experts.

it's surprising how many people claim to be better or claim they know better than a professional musician, man people on youtube are smart!

  • its about reaching down in your soul, yeah, like way down in your soul and pulling the spirit out and everybody is happy, yeah happy and cool

  • I just wonder why someone has to be better than the other????

  • Q: How can you tell when you are being an idiot?

A: You Indulge in "is Derek better than Duane" discussion

  • well they are different, there are some things that duane is better than derek and vise versa

  • Does he fingerpick everything he plays?

  • yeah

  • @JustTesting383838 never seen derek use a pick and i've seen him tons of times. warren uses a pick, but mostly when he plays rhythm guitar.

  • the simple fact is that Derek fills the void left by Duane Allman and that alone is an impossible feat which he handles with grace+ ease.....Derek is the best guitarist in the world today.

  • wow his son plays alot like him. Watch his band on here. Jay Ray Frisbee.

  • ew. you just compared sublime to the allman brothers and derek trucks. never again :)) ever.

  • crying bird at 4:25... :-O

  • Majestic Sublime

  • Comment removed

  • yeah the amazing thing is he's only going to keep getting better...he improves on every record he does

  • There ain't much music that truly speaks to me... But that's certainly some, right there.

  • duane would be proud.

the amazing thing is this video is a couple years old, and derek has gotten better and better each time I've seen him, which I didn't think was possible, just one gifted soul.

  • amazing tone!

  • Derek Trucks is GOD!

  • Best electric guitarist on the planet.

Without doubt. all others are just Hendrix and SRV imitators.

  • Um... Eric Johnson? Hello???

  • EJ is undoubtably awesome, he's the best there'es been on the G3 concerts, but he;s still too technique based, Derek plays straight from the heart. Soul comes first, amazing technique (which he also has) ,second.
