Doing this off the top of my head so forgive me if I get some details wrong. Uses reverse transcriptase to encode DS DNA (which is why RTI's, reverse transcriptase inhibitors, work) & that DNA is incorporated into the host genome by integrase.

Depending on the cell cycle (and a host of other factors we do not understand yet), it either goes latent (and can hide out in the cell DNA for years) or starts cranking out new virus particles.

As far as I know, the HIV test doesn't look for the virus itself, it looks for the antibodies the immune system gives off when first trying to fight it.
