One of the Duke's best movies. He really should have gotten Academy Award consideration. Probably would have if the Academy wasn't a nesting ground for ultra liberals. The one bad thing about this movie was the use of the models for the naval battles. I read somewhere that Kirk Douglas was pissed at their use and called them cheesy. I'd have to agree. Aside of that however, this is one of my top 5 JW movies of all time.

My father did his basic training at the Schoefield in Hawaii prior to be shipped directly to Korea in 1950. During that time, John Wayne was making a film called Operation Pacific. Wayne walked into a service man's bar filled with army soldiers and was immediately greated like a king. Wayne's response was to buy the entire bar full several rounds before he left. Class act.
