i thought on some previous lessons you had all major scales as: tone, tone, half-tone, tone, tone, tone, half tone; and all minor scales as: tone, half-tone, tone, tone, half-tone, one and a half tone, half-tone. As long as one remembers that, why would one even need to know the circle of fifths? sounds more like the circle of death...as in killing people's interest in learning piano 'cause it's confusing...
So im 14 and i have watched all the videos i am trying to learn because i am a music producer how long do u think it would take before i can compose original music from my keyboard that i have
youtube.com/watch?v=mm9cRa1VFmE&feature=related < if you guys like piano you should definitely watch this video by David Vitas, he's definitely an expert pianist He composes his own stuff as well
I Got confused, since he just worote in capital words and i dont know what are Flat minors, Flat majors, sharp minos and sharp majors.... Please help me.
Hi Andrew! :D I'm from Portugal and Id like to thank u for this lessons(music theory too)! I'm learning a lot and you're an excellent teacher and also stupidly funny :P
I have a Gaveau from 1887, and i never really paied attention to it, but i started learning guitar and i looked at the piano and thought "Why not?" and then i found your wonderful lessons and start playing too! Im really in love w u and w the piano ahah
I'll keep practising despite the piano isn't really tuned
Hi I have been using your videos to learn piano and they are awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. But I have a question... Your link to the circle of fifths didn't work for me, so I googled it. When I found pictures, each one that I looked at showed F, B, E going left from C. Am I looking at bad representations or what?
what is the point of double sharps? if the composer had the note G and wanted to double sharp it why wouldnt he just put an A down on the sheets? wouldnt that make alot more sense and make it less complicated?
I'm actually teaching my little twin brothers from your teachings. lol they always see me playing the piano at home so they wanted to learn..they're 6 years old...and i'm teachin them how YOU taught me. =D
i've always played sharp the 6th and 7th in the minor scale and returned them to the original when played down. i've always been confused about it and now it just got way more confusing
i like ur tutorials...but i had a question about the minor and major scales ur had wrriten. I thought the relative minor for the C major is A minor. please correct my confusion.
What exactly is the circle of fifths for? How is it incorporated into a song? By the way, I am totally music illiterate and am just interested in learning to play the piano. Is there an easier way?:) You're doing a great job, by the way.
huaaah, that circle of fifths is so hard to learn! I googled it and it didn`t go with that "Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles Father" on the flot-side. Have I watched wrong picture or what? The sharp side goes same way( Charles Father Goes Down And Ends Battle) When do I supposed to use this while playing? I`m confused, this is hard:S
why is everything with the piano so complicated... I just want to play songs without all the mumbo jumbo confusion of death I mean oops circle of fifths...
when I first started playing the piano I was very excited... but as I go further into it it feels more like work than it is play.. I learn more in 3 days just from watching tutorials on youtube than I have in 10 piano lessons.. I don't exactly want to be able to play every song... I just want to be able to play the songs I want
that's a good goal, my focus is to just present information, there's no need to be strict about it, if you don't want to learn the circle of fifths yet, skip ahead and get info on the topic you need help with. It can be a lot of work, but it's the same as anything else, anything that is worth something is going to take work to achieve.
MAN u have been like the greatest teacher i've ever had of any class!!! lol u are awesome and i'm learning at great pace... u are the best, but there is one thing that if you can help me with it'd be awesome... is there some practice i can do to be able to use both hands in different rythms at the same time, i mean, MAN I SUCK AT THAT! if you have any technique or s.t. to help, i'd appreciate it even more. ty
can you please explain more about the flats in the circle of fifth?where does the B flat E flat etc. comes from all the sudden in the circle (after C and F)?
Thank you! Thank you! I have tried so hard to learn this, but have gotten nowhere. You are the only person who has been able to explain it to me and have it make sense. One question - are all the minor scales listed on that circle "natural," "harmonic" or "melodic"? I know there are three types of different scales, but which one is indicated on the circle?
Answer: Natural minor. So if you know all the notes of a C-major scale, you also know the notes of an a-minor scale (natural minor), because a-minor is the relative minor to C-major, so they have the same notes but starts from a different root.
I'm a piano noob, but i do know that there is only one type of major scale, circle of fifths is just an easier way to do it instead of sitting there counting out the tones lol. so the answer to your question is it is the same
You see that the next two scales are the G-major and e-minor, these are together as they both have one sharp (F-sharp) and then it goes on like that for all the scales, minor and major, sharps and flats.
Hey, love the videoes. But its rather confusing at times. Just wondering, for the sharps does it turn out to be the same thing as the letter scale. (tone tone semitone etc. ) or is it different.
The answer is yes, you do follow the pattern of tones and semi-tones: TTSTTTS
So C-major has no sharps or flats as this scale already has the tone, semitone pattern. Also a-minor does not have any sharps or flats as this scale too follows the tone semitone pattern without need for alteration.
Hey, love the videoes. But its rather confusing at times. Just wondering, for the sharps does it turn out to be the same thing as the letter scale. (tone tone semitone etc. ) or is it different.

Hi Lypur, I made it from Lesson #1 to Lesson #9 tonight. So far I knew everything but what the middle and left pedal were used for. Sorry if this disturbs you because I know this was a difficult thing to teach on camera. I know what sharps and flats are on the keyboard, but I have NO idea whatsoever on what the Circle of Fifths is used for even after watching this video and another video on youtube. I don't have a specific question because I'm very much confused. Thanks for helping us all btw :D
Hey, do you have a tutorial explaining how to get used to playing with both hands? I can read notes and I know what to play but I cant play with both hands at the same time. Like, one hand starts doing the same thing the other one is doing. :) What are the best ways to practice this? To just get used to playing with both hands? Find a song and then memorize notes/finger positions? Thanks for all your tutorials!!
Dude that is so awesome...I have been playing the piano for about 4 years now but I still didnt know anything about that. Thanks for all of your help!
thank you thank you thank you for sharing. you're hilarious! ;) how do you like your piano? it seems to be rather melodious for a yamaha. that's one of my grievances with my kawai, it seems to lack a crisp tone definition that i hear from other pianos, but i really don't expect too much, i'm happy with it.
i love my piano, the only thing i've had problems with it keeping it in tune, but that's partly because it's a new piano, and the tempature changes dramatically throughout the year.
thanks lypur you're the best. I really enjoy your videos they're very helpful. But do i have to study all the majors and minors on the circle of fifth -i mean play them on piano??
hey thanks man^_^ ....well no ones forcing you to do anything, so you don't HAVE to do these, but i wouldn't include them if they didn't massively help. I used the circle of fifths all the time.
noooooooooooooooooooo, very clear, i very enjoy it. he is really nice man, i did learn lots from him. if you do not like it, plz do not watch it plz, Ok?
I don't think this is very clear, he knows but he has serious problems to explain music theory... Although he knows, because you can tell that.. but he doesn't know how to transmit that.. you know what i mean?
Confusing or not, this decent guy is doin' this for free on his spare time. The piano might be his passion but he has no obligation to teach. So good or bad teaching techniques, it's all the same. He's not Shawn Cheek who charges over 50 bucks a lesson you know! Enjoy or leave!
hey! don't give up! anything worth something is going to take some work, do you think I always found things easy? NOPE! i've had many hard times with piano and music, it's a struggle that you just need to keep fighting and you'll eventually win:) so keep at it! You can do it!
mmm i'm not sure what is available in your area, so i would recommend going down to your local music store and looking for a beginner scale book as well as the the beginner level of Faber (if it available where you live)
lol!! i played a game called counter strike. played with about like 5 canadians. they were just cool people to chill with and play the game with.
into cars huh? i've got a 92 eagle talon tsi awd. got some mods done to it. should run a really low 13 second in the 1/4 mile or a high 12 second. and when i get some more supporting mods it will be a low 12.
yea man, i love cars, the thing is almost all my cash goes to music/piano, but i'm not complaining! If i hadn't bought my grand piano i could be driving a pimped out rx7 FD...
over here in nebraska its pretty decent. racing till about 4 am every friday and saturday. sometimes in excess of 100 cars. pretty impression for nebraska imo
mmm up where i live it's hill billy turf, so they're all about the American muscle mostly.... I don't go out much but you can hear people racing until about 3 am, it's not extreamly organized though.
haha i see, i see. doesn't sound too shabby. this is nebraska. we have got a lot of everything. a lot of ls1's and 32v mustangs and dsm's(when they run!!)
is knowing the circle of fifths really that important?
i have been playing french horn in a semi-professional orchestra for some time without even knowing the circle of fifths even existed.
yes our music has key signatures but i just remember that like "ok note B is flat so every B i see i will play flat" is there anything wrong with this method or is it better (if so how) to learn your way?
Well, it's not really "my" way, it's extremely helpful to have this memorized in your head, that way switching keys on the fly is much easier to understand, and if you're going to be doing any composing where you'll be modulating into other key's it's almost impossible to do so without knowing this. the great thing about knowing this is you know every possible scale mainstream scale.
well if it bores you, watch another video? I try to make it enjoyable, and i don't always to the best job as i have alot of other stuff to do, and i'm not always in the best mood, but i still try my best, and if i'm not entertaining you, then please move on
thx for the diagram! hey i wanted to thank you for all the lessons! i finished 2 weeks ago and i wanted to watch them all again!!! they r so entertaining and easy to learn from! teachers r so expensive so im relying on u. thx again!!!
flats and sharps reminds me of my hyskul teacher, she used to teach me those stuffs before but i didnt even bother to listen to her(shes boring) but thanks to u, now i am totaly familiar of sharps and flats^_^ ur teaching skills are fun!! your jokes&ol dat!kip it up^_^ my only comment is that i hope u cud explain the circle of fifths 1 mor tym and teach us how 2 use it(slowly and clearly)^_^ thanks~
i do understand this vid thnx but on sum sheet music i found recently it has two treble clefs one under the other and i thought that u had 2 hav a treble clef then a bass clef under that :\
Yea, I know that must sound confusing, I was trying to be basic, so i didn't go into if you run into two treble clefs. just remember the top line will be your right hand, bottom line is your left hand, there ARE some cases where that's not true, but they're rare. People will put a Treble clef in the bottom line if you're playing alot of high notes in the left hand, that way it's alot easier to read than a bunch of ledger lines.
I used to play the trumpet so learning all the notes and beats over again was easy. Ive been fine on every lesson so far up to this point, and now im totally lost. Maybe you could explain the circle slower next time or something. It seemed like the further you would go the more the flats and sharps would change from what i thought they were, if that makes sense?
Wow your vidz are very informative, and i cant say that i learn much over the internet, but these r if not better then regular lessons, lol. now the ppl who said i couldnt r gonna get there noses rubed into it, G/w i respect that
DAmn,i need to learn notes back at lesson 2.This is gonna take me a month to play the piano! At least its not your fault. Its my fault.I just wanna rush things y know.
i thought on some previous lessons you had all major scales as: tone, tone, half-tone, tone, tone, tone, half tone; and all minor scales as: tone, half-tone, tone, tone, half-tone, one and a half tone, half-tone. As long as one remembers that, why would one even need to know the circle of fifths? sounds more like the circle of death...as in killing people's interest in learning piano 'cause it's confusing...

mmm i'm not sure what is available in your area, so i would recommend going down to your local music store and looking for a beginner scale book as well as the the beginner level of Faber (if it available where you live)

canadians are badass. i think that's why i've even watched these vids this far lol
i would love to learn piano. its the only instrument in the house so i'm gonna give it a go. so hard to learn just watching vids kind of lol

LMFAO...."canadians are badass" lol.....wtf! hahaha...ok what do you mean? please explain this to me i'd LOVE to hear!
Lypur 4 years ago
lol!! i played a game called counter strike. played with about like 5 canadians. they were just cool people to chill with and play the game with.
into cars huh? i've got a 92 eagle talon tsi awd. got some mods done to it. should run a really low 13 second in the 1/4 mile or a high 12 second. and when i get some more supporting mods it will be a low 12.
dsmdarryl 4 years ago
yea man, i love cars, the thing is almost all my cash goes to music/piano, but i'm not complaining! If i hadn't bought my grand piano i could be driving a pimped out rx7 FD...

over here in nebraska its pretty decent. racing till about 4 am every friday and saturday. sometimes in excess of 100 cars. pretty impression for nebraska imo
dsmdarryl 4 years ago
mmm up where i live it's hill billy turf, so they're all about the American muscle mostly.... I don't go out much but you can hear people racing until about 3 am, it's not extreamly organized though.
Lypur 4 years ago

is knowing the circle of fifths really that important?
i have been playing french horn in a semi-professional orchestra for some time without even knowing the circle of fifths even existed.
yes our music has key signatures but i just remember that like "ok note B is flat so every B i see i will play flat" is there anything wrong with this method or is it better (if so how) to learn your way?
simonw1485 4 years ago
Well, it's not really "my" way, it's extremely helpful to have this memorized in your head, that way switching keys on the fly is much easier to understand, and if you're going to be doing any composing where you'll be modulating into other key's it's almost impossible to do so without knowing this. the great thing about knowing this is you know every possible scale mainstream scale.

hi i have been watching and enjoying your videos but what is this circle of fifths thingy ?

i do understand this vid thnx but on sum sheet music i found recently it has two treble clefs one under the other and i thought that u had 2 hav a treble clef then a bass clef under that :\
stephiwephi 4 years ago
Yea, I know that must sound confusing, I was trying to be basic, so i didn't go into if you run into two treble clefs. just remember the top line will be your right hand, bottom line is your left hand, there ARE some cases where that's not true, but they're rare. People will put a Treble clef in the bottom line if you're playing alot of high notes in the left hand, that way it's alot easier to read than a bunch of ledger lines.
Lypur 4 years ago
I used to play the trumpet so learning all the notes and beats over again was easy. Ive been fine on every lesson so far up to this point, and now im totally lost. Maybe you could explain the circle slower next time or something. It seemed like the further you would go the more the flats and sharps would change from what i thought they were, if that makes sense?
