Fast shredding is skills, yes, but I'm a guitarist and a bit experienced in this subject. It's about being virtouso, not to be a fast robot with no feeling for the playing (I'm not insulting you, just giving a example). I've been listening to famous guitarists and comparing these musicians. Most of them are awesome, but they don't have any feeling for the playing.
I bet you've never heard of phrasing or vibrato, shredding doesn't include any of them. Clapton can make his music have a meaning. Shredding is just about getting young kiddies to love you. I'm 13 before you say anything twattish about being a grandpa. Thing is with Malmsteen. Only guitarists know who he is. A few comments re some posts here..I'm a major Tommy Emmanuel fan and yes he's a freak. One of the hundreds of times I've seen him was opening for Clapton. He had 10000 people's jaw's dropping with just an acoustic guitar. Then EC came on and with his first 15 seconds of playing, made TE look almost redundant. No one plays/sounds/puts the amount of feel into guitar as much as Clapton.
Vibrato? Listen to Double Crossing time on Bluesbreakers. Listen to Tons of Sobs with Kossoff. Both killers

On ONE fucking thing.
Guitar playing is about more than mindless shredding, which is what stuff like MAB is. But calling Jason becker mindless shred is like calling your mother beautiful, it's just not true. Eric Clapton is definitely a good musician, he has good composition, but his music is BOOOOOOOOORING.
Now, Becker has this same awesome composition, but manages to make music that is exciting, refreshing and has an awesome mood.

And who I would call better.. But he made some awesome tracks like Tears in Heaven. Not hard to play, but so beautiful.. So yeah, I know that guitar playing is about more than just shredding, but fast shredding is still skillzzz

Fast shredding is skills, yes, but I'm a guitarist and a bit experienced in this subject. It's about being virtouso, not to be a fast robot with no feeling for the playing (I'm not insulting you, just giving a example). I've been listening to famous guitarists and comparing these musicians. Most of them are awesome, but they don't have any feeling for the playing.

I bet you've never heard of phrasing or vibrato, shredding doesn't include any of them. Clapton can make his music have a meaning. Shredding is just about getting young kiddies to love you. I'm 13 before you say anything twattish about being a grandpa. Thing is with Malmsteen. Only guitarists know who he is. With Clapton, people who play and don't know who he is, and worship him for that matter, also I believe everyone who knows a thing about music will continue to love him even after he dies.

So, have you ever listened to Stevie Ray Vaughan. He's the bridge between so called shredding and soulful playing and he's bloody brilliant. Eric Clapton on the other hand knows how to play a guitar elegantly and soulfully. Don't argue against soulful playing. Any good guitarist respects good music.

liftys right malmsteem could play anything clapton does but it wouldn't work the other way round. Check out rusty cooley and malmsteem and all of them. thats real guitar playing

My comment re girlfriend - not everything is best when done quickly ;-) Seriously tho, yeah Yngwie is a great player (Satriani is better IMHO) and the whole neo-classical thing was cool for a while but I watched Yngwie on the G3 tour and he looked a little dorky busting out of those spandex trousers! To dimiss Hendrix as shit because he didn't play a million notes a second is missing the point - Hendrix was a great player.

A few comments re some posts here..I'm a major Tommy Emmanuel fan and yes he's a freak. One of the hundreds of times I've seen him was opening for Clapton. He had 10000 people's jaw's dropping with just an acoustic guitar. Then EC came on and with his first 15 seconds of playing, made TE look almost redundant. No one plays/sounds/puts the amount of feel into guitar as much as Clapton.
Vibrato? Listen to Double Crossing time on Bluesbreakers. Listen to Tons of Sobs with Kossoff. Both killers
