Interesting argument. My belief: WWI and WWII were bailouts by the US of the Western Powers after burning themselves playing the imperialism game. Our involvement was more an "I told you so, during the 16 point talks in Versailles, to share power evenly", but it was necessary due to the real threat of world catastrophe. The threat Iraq or Iran present militarily isn't even close. However, threating the dollar's world reserve currency status by selling oil in Euros was a serious economic threat.

I think you do have a point that at times public opinion can go against conventional wisdom. But I think it depends on how educated the public is. In the '40's, our country was indoctrinated as non-interventionist and perhaps FDR did what he felt he had to do, so I give him somewhat of a pass. What Bush did was blatantly lie to swap the Ba'athists, who the CIA put in power in the '60's, hoping to control them and their oil, for a new government to control.

Not just 20 percent of Sunni ruling class as with Saddam, but 100 percent of all Iraqi's. Not long from now, Iraq will be a strong leader in the free world, politically and economically.
