They have great sound and blend! They just don't move together as an ensemble very well.. =P That would've been a fun group to be a part of though if I were still in High School
@vulturedroid2 If you go to a professional orchestra or any other regular preforming group you will see them moving. When you reach a point in your musical career you realize the full potential of phrases and how to phrase them. When you play a piece that is so beautiful as Lux Aurumque, you can't just sit in your chair and play the notes. The notes fill you up and they ring in your ear. The tintinnabulation of the music echoes and it touches you on such a deep level that nothing else can.
Thats what I was wondering. I believe they played it near the end of their 2007 show, Trancendents. Beautiful song by the 2008 Honor Band, and also for LD Bell. Its amazing the quality that LD Bell had that year for a marching band.
Well, I guess it is out of tune, but 1) I personally was able to tell what note it was supposed to be, 2) it's a solo without any other instruments so it doesn't conflict with anyone else, and 3) theoretically in 2008 that girl was the best high school french horn player in the United States of America. So I wouldn't be critiquing haha.
Plus this recording is better than that of the US Air Force Band IMO. Bravo.
Oh, and I think her tone was fine. Even for a prof. group. Sounds great.
well to be honest, not saying the soloist isn't fantastic but by her being first chair in this ensemble does not technically mean she is the best in the United States since not all the french horns in this country auditioned for this ensemble. no discredit to the player, fantastic tone, but i've heard better in the texas all state band. no discredit to this performance, I actually think this ensemble should be given much credit
@phantomreg101 I get where you're coming from. I can't defend the fact that the note was sharp, but keep in mind that the stage was hot...and had many bodies on it. For the record, the principal hornist and assistant principal were cut out of the video. The principal was actually a horn player....from Texas....so i'm pretty sure he was also part of the texas all-state band. You're right...his tone was great, but the note was off...he's still a heck of a player.
I love how each band's interperition of this song is different. For example, in this one, the horns stand out and you can really hear the brass chords. Check out the NC all state band playing this on my channel and you'll see what I mean.
omg i was conducted by him, last year at the university of miami honor band, playing this song it was awesome one of the most emotiona songs i've ever played
when my honors band was conducted by him he didnt show that much awe even though he did congradulate us on a dynamic sound that we had. its more of an expresiion for us to use more expression with our air. one of he things i love about him is that he doesnt go crazy with conductibng to a point that u dont even know the tempo plus he uses open palm cunducting which to me feels mor comfertable thn a baton or using ur finger
ha! no, he's pushing us play... take it as he wants us to use more air and open up. i remember, that was his face throughout the concert until the end.
Dr. Gary Green... this man is probably the most amazing director i have ever played in a band with... simply amazing how he directs this song and really stretches out the phrases... someday i wish to play in an honor ensemble with this man as my conductor
He conducted the Broward Honors Band 2009, which I was a percussionist in, it was pretty cool. In the prep for the concert, he was telling us the history of every piece. This was actually arranged for him. Nice guy.
that conductor...is that gary greene? I think that he conducted the Broward all-county band in 2009, which I was a part of. We also played Lux Aurumque.
It does look like Gary Greene. He came to help my high school with a couple of pieces and I think when he conducted the All-County for Miami Dade my freshman year, we did this piece as well.
This is such a gorgeous song. Our band is playing it for Kiwanis this year. only bad part is no one wants play french horn, which sucks. It's just no the same with a flute. Beautiful, but not the same
wow. that was the part coming into C. C made my hair stand up. perfect guys. i played this with the ontario provincial honour band but we weren't as good as this. wow
i was 1st chair oboe in this. and if youve heard the beginning u heard my solo..... it kinda sucked haha. my reed cracked in the 1st song and i didnt have a back-up reed..... :( so my tone kinda sounded like a dead duck haha i hope to make it this year again, it was quite an experience and worth the crappy audition process.
Drumbum, I was in the honor band this year, and you don't get the smartmusic stuff until August. I'm glad to see you're trying out. It was one of the best experiences I've ever had.
OMG I love him! No wonder you guys are playing Lux Aurumque! We played it in 2007 RI All-State band. He loves that piece. (And with good reason...though I prefer it sung by a choir, it felt amazing to play it in a wind ensemble...I love the power winds evoke during the climax...)
All throughout listening to this piece, I was staring at the screen like the conductor at 0:51. A flawless and magnificent performance, indeed. Brought tears of joy to my face.
