  • They have great sound and blend! They just don't move together as an ensemble very well.. =P That would've been a fun group to be a part of though if I were still in High School

  • whos the really pretty girl trombone player in the back?

  • Why are so many of them moving?

  • @vulturedroid2 If you go to a professional orchestra or any other regular preforming group you will see them moving. When you reach a point in your musical career you realize the full potential of phrases and how to phrase them. When you play a piece that is so beautiful as Lux Aurumque, you can't just sit in your chair and play the notes. The notes fill you up and they ring in your ear. The tintinnabulation of the music echoes and it touches you on such a deep level that nothing else can.

  • i am so nervous for honor band tryouts in less then 2 weeks i have to play Ah! Perfido Spergiuro for clarinet

  • this looks very advanced. i wish i could be in it

  • is the honor band made from people all the u.s, or a very, very good high school?

  • @ElKrill14

It is by audition of high school kids all around the U.S

  • Tennessee All-State band performed this much better.

  • @trumpetXguyXdavid of course an all state band would perform it better. it has all the best muisicians of that state

and im sure however that the Tennessee all state band did not perform it better then the texas all state band

this band sounds really good though, good balance, and i love how you guys took it slower then most people do

  • @mandm4I17 check out the NC all-state recording on youtube, i think we gave texas a run for their money :)

  • :46 I love that part.

  • @scoopztb My favorite part of the song. C is just my favorite

  • Texas all state band performed this so much better. sooooooo much better

  • Where can I hear the Texas All-State band performance of this?

  • Haha good one. I like this one soooooooo much better.

  • Didn't L.D. Bell play this in one of their shows?

  • Thats what I was wondering. I believe they played it near the end of their 2007 show, Trancendents. Beautiful song by the 2008 Honor Band, and also for LD Bell. Its amazing the quality that LD Bell had that year for a marching band.

  • Yes, they did.

  • 05 and 07

  • wow you're just amazing. we've played it too... and wow ... you're realy great!

  • at 1:07 is that david childs on euphonium? i dont see what he would be doing in an honor band of america...but it looks like him....?

  • that looks nothing like him to me.

  • Yeahh haha now that I look at him it doesn't look anything like him

  • lol

  • That was some experience playing in that. He was some conductor!

  • it sounds really out of tune..I think its just cuz of her tone which sounds not that well.. thats just me, I played the instrument

  • Im auditioning for an Honor Band in April.

  • wow that horn was sooo out of tune it was a different note I think! that ruined it for me...

  • Comment removed

  • it was ridiculously sharp

  • Well, I guess it is out of tune, but 1) I personally was able to tell what note it was supposed to be, 2) it's a solo without any other instruments so it doesn't conflict with anyone else, and 3) theoretically in 2008 that girl was the best high school french horn player in the United States of America. So I wouldn't be critiquing haha.

Plus this recording is better than that of the US Air Force Band IMO. Bravo.

Oh, and I think her tone was fine. Even for a prof. group. Sounds great.

  • Comment removed

  • well to be honest, not saying the soloist isn't fantastic but by her being first chair in this ensemble does not technically mean she is the best in the United States since not all the french horns in this country auditioned for this ensemble. no discredit to the player, fantastic tone, but i've heard better in the texas all state band. no discredit to this performance, I actually think this ensemble should be given much credit

  • @phantomreg101 I get where you're coming from. I can't defend the fact that the note was sharp, but keep in mind that the stage was hot...and had many bodies on it. For the record, the principal hornist and assistant principal were cut out of the video. The principal was actually a horn player....from Texas....so i'm pretty sure he was also part of the texas all-state band. You're right...his tone was great, but the note was off...he's still a heck of a player.

  • @teencowboyfan09 yea it was way sharp

  • @teencowboyfan09 It was a minor note bro.

  • this is originally a choral work...it sounds a lot better that way too... but still amazing performance

  • The band version was written first when it was commissioned for the 2005 Texas Honor Band

and I think it sounds better in the band version. The arrangement is slightly different

  • i remember this song! i love it.

  • who is conducting?

  • Gary Green, he does this piece often when he does guest conducting.

  • oh and I suppose I'll add that this piece was transcribed for band because Gary Green asked Eric Whitacre to do it.

  • :D It makes me sooo happy to hear this.

I'm so excited to go this year :)

  • not 1 bad note, perfect intonation. wow

  • i love playing that piece.

  • playing this peice is the most amazing feeling.

  • i love this :)

  • Agreed... tid slow for me. still pretty though.

  • Way to dragged out im sorry way to slow for my taste but beautiful none the less

  • damn... I'd love to be a part of that trumpet section just for 1:42

  • does anyone know why this part (and this part only) was changed from the choral version when it was written for band?

  • I love how each band's interperition of this song is different. For example, in this one, the horns stand out and you can really hear the brass chords. Check out the NC all state band playing this on my channel and you'll see what I mean.

  • Im glad they showed the best part of the song in this excerpt. This song is creepy but beautiful.

  • omg i was conducted by him, last year at the university of miami honor band, playing this song it was awesome one of the most emotiona songs i've ever played

  • Is That Gary Green?

  • Where can I see the whole record of this famous video? Thanks

  • His face also shows the emotional awe that he is in, standing in front of that kind of sound

  • when my honors band was conducted by him he didnt show that much awe even though he did congradulate us on a dynamic sound that we had. its more of an expresiion for us to use more expression with our air. one of he things i love about him is that he doesnt go crazy with conductibng to a point that u dont even know the tempo plus he uses open palm cunducting which to me feels mor comfertable thn a baton or using ur finger

  • Conductor is Gary Green, from the University of Miami

  • This is an INCREDIBLE piece, and wow, they definitely did it justice. :D

  • is he yawning....

  • ha! no, he's pushing us play... take it as he wants us to use more air and open up. i remember, that was his face throughout the concert until the end.

  • no one yawns for THAT long lol

  • I dont think he is yawning lol. He is saying bold sound with expression from his face lol.

  • Where can I find the full version of this performance?

  • My God. That was the most amazing performance of this I've ever heard. Omg.

Who was the conductor? He was amazing.

    <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

  • Conductor was Gary Green, who's Director of Bands at Univ. of Miami (FL).

He is indeed amazing. Best conductor I've ever worked with.

  • just listen to those basses. damn. my band played this, maybe 65% as good, maybe.

  • Simply amazing.. I love the way that this is done. Slower than normal. Love it.

  • Dr. Gary Green... this man is probably the most amazing director i have ever played in a band with... simply amazing how he directs this song and really stretches out the phrases... someday i wish to play in an honor ensemble with this man as my conductor

  • He conducted the Broward Honors Band 2009, which I was a percussionist in, it was pretty cool. In the prep for the concert, he was telling us the history of every piece. This was actually arranged for him. Nice guy.

  • i was in that band i was 2nd to last trombone. and to prove it i have the videos from that night in coral springs. which percussionist is this?

  • Matt Shuham (Cooper City High)

  • Favorite video of Lux Aurumque on youtube!

  • he looks familiar....really familiar

  • omg im gonna be there in less than 2 weeks. holy crapolaaa!!!

  • I had chills listening to this. Eric Whitacre is a god of composition.

  • who's the guy flute player?

  • Wow this song has really touched me and that was great! I hope that one day I can be good enough to be 1st chair in this band! :)

  • If it is, im playing this piece this weekend with the all-nw band

  • that conductor...is that gary greene? I think that he conducted the Broward all-county band in 2009, which I was a part of. We also played Lux Aurumque.

  • It does look like Gary Greene. He came to help my high school with a couple of pieces and I think when he conducted the All-County for Miami Dade my freshman year, we did this piece as well.

  • beautiful. love that piece

  • Comment removed

  • which hillcrest boy are you?

  • to bad they didn't have percussion parts, they make this song like 50 times more beautiful

  • At 1:11 I know the guy on the far left playing sax! He goes to my school.

  • when on the alto saxes the far left one is in my wind ensemble!!

  • We sang this in october in new York, its an amazing peice, along with Sleep

  • Where could I listen to the whole concert at?

  • It was also used in Ascension.

  • ahh this is soo good. i heard our school band do it and i fell in freaking love with it eric whitacre is like a god.

im a chorus nerd all the way but i definitely love the instrumental version of this song better than the choral version.

  • Uh, no.

    Transcendents.

  • At C, it is the most intense thing, even though we only have one bassoon and tuba..*shudder* so good....

  • i was at this performance in indiana and it was so awesome. it's one of my favorite pieces and this was so great.

my band played at this music for all festival that this was at.

  • actully it was in the show transcendants

  • it's kinda hard to tell, did they use any extreme recording with microphones all over the place, or is it just your average audio?

  • that piece is great allways gives me chills

  • I recently tried out for all southern honor band but they haven't anounced yet who made it. I play the trumpet and cornet

  • YOu mean SEUS?

  • This is such a gorgeous song. Our band is playing it for Kiwanis this year. only bad part is no one wants play french horn, which sucks. It's just no the same with a flute. Beautiful, but not the same

  • wow. that was the part coming into C. C made my hair stand up. perfect guys. i played this with the ontario provincial honour band but we weren't as good as this. wow

  • haha thats crazy , We're playing this with the PEI Honors band tommorow. We have a conductor from ontario!

  • nice. what's his/her name?

  • Her name was Gillian Mackay ,

  • I played in this group and I would have to agree. C is one of my favorite chords ever! It makes my hairs stand up every time.

HBOA was one of the best experiences I have ever had!

  • the conductor was our conductor at honor band too!!! OMG OMG OMG!!

  • yup, Gary Green

  • wow, really good, how do you aplly, is there only one for the whole country..? cool!

  • you have to go online to do that.

  • i wish they would have put "give us this day" on here though. in my opinion, it was the best piece we played.

  • I love that piece!!! we played that in honor band last year!

  • I love the way that this is done. Slower than normal. Love it.

  • ...this song is amazing. But if you play it wrong, it sounds SOOO bad (trust me i know...)

  • My band was the only Middle School Band to perform there! ^_^

    (R.I.P.) Ms. Z

  • i actually saw this live and i have to say i wasn't fully satisfied with it. It was great but I heard them play it better in rehearsal.

When they played "Give us this Day" by David Maslanka I was AMAZED! :)

  • i was 1st chair oboe in this. and if youve heard the beginning u heard my solo..... it kinda sucked haha. my reed cracked in the 1st song and i didnt have a back-up reed..... :( so my tone kinda sounded like a dead duck haha i hope to make it this year again, it was quite an experience and worth the crappy audition process.

  • Playing this song under the direction of Gary Green way by far one of the most satisfying moments of my life.

  • how do you get into this group?

  • mm i love this :)

i think im gonna try out for this next year.

  • Drumbum, I was in the honor band this year, and you don't get the smartmusic stuff until August. I'm glad to see you're trying out. It was one of the best experiences I've ever had.

  • i sent my application for the 2009 one like a month ago maybe more and i still havent received the smart music cd yet. has anyone gotten theirs yet

  • IS THAT GARY GREEN?!?!

OMG I love him! No wonder you guys are playing Lux Aurumque! We played it in 2007 RI All-State band. He loves that piece. (And with good reason...though I prefer it sung by a choir, it felt amazing to play it in a wind ensemble...I love the power winds evoke during the climax...)

  • there's a flute I recognise

  • All throughout listening to this piece, I was staring at the screen like the conductor at 0:51. A flawless and magnificent performance, indeed. Brought tears of joy to my face.

  • whats wrong at 1:51?

  • the clarinets and the horns didnt come in at the same time.

my wind ensemble played that piece for our spring concert, it's a very beautiful piece.

you could make your own story just by listening to the music :]

  • Good except for 1:51. But mistakes make us human right?

  • I tried out, and didn't make it....oh well...

it's easy to audition, just go to the music for all site...

  • Don't tell me that the Honor Band PWNs the Honor Orchestra. I think they are both exceptionally good ensembles in their own ways and with their own merits.

  • i was thinkin about tryin out for this but i didn't want to really

  • How hard is it to get in this?

  • Imagine if you will.. 1000 kids nation wide trying to compete for 100 spots.. its intense..

  • yea man gary green conducted me in the UM honor band festival...we did lux too but never took it this slow lol...i feel bad for the horn player doing the g's and f's lol

  • Comment removed

  • hey im a clarinet player and im pretty gud

how do i get into this ensemble

  • alex shutup ur horn solo was fine. loser..

i loved performing with this ensemble. one of the best times i've ever had. miss you guys

  • is the conductor Gary Green from University of Miami?

  • yeah, he's amazing

  • aww sweet they actually got this up?

yeah i kinda sucked on the horn solo, my bad. Sounds uncentered probably cuz of that sucky mouthpiece i was playing on.

Rest sounded great though guys, see ya next year if you go.

  • Nice Job....:]

  • played first trombone on this,

and definately didn't realize that we did a wave about 16 seconds in.

    heh.

most certainly the best time i've ever had playing this was in that ensemble though. wish i could go back next year...

  • hey, it's K-Go. yeah i noticed we did the ripple. i agree that this was the absolute greatest ensemble i've ever played with.

  • I didn't either.

This is max, btw. 3rd trombone.

  • meant this as a reply to nick's post.

  • Wow. This defines awesome. I feel incredibly lucky to have played with such an amazing ensemble.

I wish they could've uploaded the 2nd movement of "Give Us This Day" though. That was probably the most epic out of everything we played.

  • Gorgeous! A beautiful score, executed with great heart! Bravo!

  • Ohh...that's beautiful stuff right there. I love the conductor's push and pull over the ensemble, it's amazing. Kudos to the musicians who payed that close attention, that was a fabulous performance. Luscious tone from all over the ensemble. Really wish I could hear the whole recording including the beginning half, but that was possibly the best band recording I've heard of this so far. Awesome stuff!

  • Heh, heh. My head is in one of the shots...I had front row seats.

  • OMG! That was my ABSOLUTE favorite on the program!! I SOOOO want to go back next year!

  • this is beautiful go horns

how do i audition for this?

  • wow... that horn solo C-D-Eb, They made the soloist hold it out for such a long time! But I love how it just grows into the first impact moment! Bravo!!!

  • Awesome. Beautiful piece. Go trombones!
