My German is very very limited - are there English words to this song? I suppose the imprisoned anarchists were considered "communists" by the nazis-very similar to what many Republicans think in the USA.
This had an odd effect on me, as I know the song from hearing it at an early age on the family's secret copy (dangerous in 1950s USA) of the Ernst Busch recording.
So, a grim song in its subject matter, history, and personal associations. The association with the two beautiful children was wasn't obvious to me, but now it is. Thanks for this.

There is also an English version of this song, performed by The Dubliners, titled "The Peat-bog Soldiers". It's a very close translation so I recommend it if you don't understand German. BTW the German song is also sung by German youth movement today, you know, Scouts and the like, and some punk/rock bands have also covered like, p.ex "Die Schnitter".

The song was created in 1933 by prisoners of the concentration camp "citizen's moor" near castle Papen in the Emsland. The song was performed in 27th August, 1933 by 16 prisoners. The description comes from Rudi Gogue, one of the prisoners. He had composed the song

Als Patriot verteidigt man Volk und Heimat. Und da wir eine Demokratie sind und somit unsere Verfassung durch das Volk und für das Volk geschaffen wurde haben Nazis und Radikale die die Menschenrechte mit Füssen treten keine Chance.
Schade nur dass es Menschen gibt die das einzigartige Geschenk der Freiheit nicht schätzen können, das uns mit dem Leben vieler alliierter Soldaten erkämpft wurde.

The most impressive piece of music written in those dark times in Germany. Surely it gave a spark of hope in a desolated country. These guys were the real patriots they wanted to turn Germany into a better place.

also im dem lied gehts ums kz praktisch, also des hat einer geschrieben der damals im kz war und irgendwie wiedr rausgekommen is und das kz war irgendwo im moor ka des war ma auf bayern alqfa wenn ma aufpasst hört man schon die anspielung aufs kz zb mit stacheldrat umzeunt und so musst ma aufpassen. auf jedenfall voll tragisch und so ich wenn des lied hör möcht ich gleich nen fascho verprügeln die dreck wixxer die.

Nur dem zweiten Satz kann ich zustimmen. Schließlich waren 1. meine Vorfahren Opfer und nicht Täter und 2. bringt ewige Scham niemandem etwas. Wichtiger wäre es, diese Zeit zu analysieren und daraus zu lernen. Rassismus, "starker Mann"Rheotrik, rassistisch verkürzte Kapitalismuskritik udgl. thematisieren, Eintreten für Demokratie, für Freiheit, Gleichheit und gegen sinnlose Kriege, das wäre mE die Aufgabe die uns Deutschen/Österreichern gem. unserer abscheulichen geschichte zukämen sollte.

I actually like the blending of your grand children with the song. The girls present the future and their presence is symbol of life, symbol of the victory over Nazism. They are the proof that the suffering of those people who wrote this song then was not all in vain.

There is also an English version of this song, performed by The Dubliners, titled "The Peat-bog Soldiers". It's a very close translation so I recommend it if you don't understand German. BTW the German song is also sung by German youth movement today, you know, Scouts and the like, and some punk/rock bands have also covered like, p.ex "Die Schnitter".

The song was created in 1933 by prisoners of the concentration camp "citizen's moor" near castle Papen in the Emsland. The song was performed in 27th August, 1933 by 16 prisoners. The description comes from Rudi Gogue, one of the prisoners. He had composed the song

Von Strophe zu Strophe steigerte sich der Refrain, und bei der letzten Strophe sangen auch die SS-Leute, die mit ihren Kommandanten erschienen waren, einträchtig mit uns mit, offenbar, weil sie sich selbst als "Moorsoldaten" angesprochen fühlten.

Die sechzehn Sänger, vorwiegend Mitglieder des Solinger Arbeitergesangsverein, marschierten in ihren grünen Polizeiuniformen (unsere damalige Häftlingskleidung) mit geschulterten Spaten in die Arena, ich selbst an der Spitze in blauem Trainingsanzug mit einem abgebrochenen Spatenstiel als Taktstock. Wir sangen, und bereits bei der zweiten Strophe begannen die fast 1000 Gefangenen den Refrain mitzusummen.

Als Patriot kann man auch nur gegen die Nazis sein. Man muss sich nur ansehen, wie die Nazis Deutschland kaputt gemacht und in den Dreck geritten haben. Jeder, der Deutschland aufrichtig liebt, muss zwangsläufig alle Nazis und NPD und wie das Gesocks heißt, ablehnen.

Als Patriot verteidigt man Volk und Heimat. Und da wir eine Demokratie sind und somit unsere Verfassung durch das Volk und für das Volk geschaffen wurde haben Nazis und Radikale die die Menschenrechte mit Füssen treten keine Chance.
Schade nur dass es Menschen gibt die das einzigartige Geschenk der Freiheit nicht schätzen können, das uns mit dem Leben vieler alliierter Soldaten erkämpft wurde.
Wir waren damals zu schwach uns die Freiheit zu erkämpfen und das Leben anderer zu schützen. Leider.
