Pava and Freni was perhaps the greatest pairing for Puccini ever. There is also the Tebaldi and Del Monaco twosome, but these two just had the earnest and pure voices to sing those innately passionate, and let's face it mostly gullible, Puccini characters.

To the 21 people who do not like this music. I was in Japan in the theater and the music and the voice did vibrate the skin.If one day go to heaven, this is the music you will hear.
It feels like sunday morning every time I hear pavarotti singing this master piece. My father was, while doing the dishes after breakfast, singing this along pavarotti. I still miss them both.
I just came back from my city opera (Strasbourg) where saw this marvelous Boheme. I wanted to stay tuned to this great music and voices and I'm still crying. What a beautiful and sad story. By all means, Pavarotti is the best for Che gelida manina.
Simply stunning, and yet there is nothing simple about his amazing talent. Sorry but anyone who does not like this or is not moved by his voice does not know true music. His voice has such a soulful and moving power that is unmatched. Love u always Pavarotti.
It is just amazing that after almost 30 yrd of singing professionaly all around the world...that he sounds so amazing...compared with so many others who are lucky to last 10....and better yet...he did it for ANOTHER 10 yrs....simply amazing
What is fascinating is that even though this is Pavarotti's aria, Freni, while correctly serving as the silent springboard for his onstage character's feelings, is really an award winning actress in this clip!
The best operatic tenor performance ever. A true tenor must be able to sing this full of emotion and feeling at the right pitch. And they aren't any Pop or operatic tenors today who can sing this well as they lack both in vocal quaility and expressiveness.
No one else can sing this Puccini masterpiece and "Core n grato" by Cardillo better than the Maestro Pavoratti.
@klickenpod it's down a half-step (the high note is a B and not a C)... It has been popular practice to lower this aria (and others - but only for big name singers) to ensure a safe performance when the singers aren't feeling 100%.
@MissBeautyAddict And may I give it a thumbs down if it wasn't because of him ?
Just kidding here, obviously =) One of the things I most love about classical stuff on Youtube is that it doesn't generally have hate messages towards one another.
i just had like a million musical nerdgasms .... all i can say is that for the first time in my life, as a bass, i wish that i was a tenor ... or a baritone with a slight higher range ...
isnt this the song featured in JR WARD's Black Dagger Brotherhood series? the character Zsadist in the third novel used to sing this piece for his twin Phury...
Everyone should note that Freni jizzes her pants at 3:28, having the best seat in the house for that note. SANG PAVAROTTI! You are missed sweet tenor!
unfortuately here, he is a half step down :(, but it is only showing us that he like everyone else, is human. please do not disagree with me until you have a piano next to you as i do
I wish we could have english subtitles..Iknow there are those musical/intellectuals who think that is wrong, for all very profound and interesting reasons, but I am just beginning to know operas and I think if more effort was made for more to be able to understand the poignant, relateable stories, opera would be universally beloved, instead of mocked, as it sometimes is by the "ignorant", if you will. I know that I never thought about how difficult singing opera is before, either.....
@kathberry8 That's wonderful that you're starting to appreciate and find more about opera. And as a music edcuator, I agree that the very least subtitles should be given for those to understand the story line as the music is playing. I agree with Brahms idea of composing in the language of the people. That's why he wrote his Requiem in German rather than Latin, so the people could understand the power of words through music. Continue to foster your love for music and opera!
@bstmanversusskeletor "I can just imagine the feeling that lady is having is one of awe." Yeah very convincing the way she seems like a little somebody basking in the attention of greatness. But she's actually another accomplished opera singer playing a role. Coincidentally, Mirelle Freni, and Pavarotti grew up in the same town, their mothers worked together in the same cigar factory—according to Wikipedia— and knew one another as children. Luciano notorious for acting like a prima dona....
ok, now i am going to play the "trained musician card". i would offer that puccini composed this aria in d-flat because he "heard" the beauty of "flat" keys and also because d-flat natuarally leads to a-flat which leads to the climactic high "c" near the end of the aria. this aria was not intended to be peformed in the bland key of
c-major.
despite pavarotti's emotional performance, i am not willing to give him a pass on this. why couldn't he perform the piece as written?
too bad it's a half-step lower than the original, so he didn't have to hit the high c. how dare he re-arrange an entire opera so he didn't have to sing the notes.
@JAREDKIRCH no, i'm not. i do not dislike pavarotti. however, i have grown weary of all these so-called "greats" being given a "pass" whenever they choose to lower the key. caruso did it, as well, and the "know-it-alls" claim that puccini was "ok" with it. really?
you see, lanza's talent is consistently discounted because "he would not have been able to maintain it throughout an entire stage performance". well...why do we hold any of the rest to that same standard?
@jgraif I see you said you're a trained musician! Me too! I see your point, but put yourself in Maestro Pavarotti's shoes. What if you, say, had a problem with allergies the week of the show and you couldn't quite hit that crucial C. Would you risk letting thousands of patrons down by a crack in your voice? Besides, if you did crack during the performance, even in the slightest, they would boo you. Pavarotti got booed once. As far as Lanza, he is very talented,
@JAREDKIRCH thank you very much for making a very valid point, which i should have considered before opening my big mouth! live performances must be perfect. that is what separates the professionals from the amatuers, the ability to perform a piece over and over without error. i have also since learned that puccini's original score is a major third lower, in the key of a major. so, my entire argument is moot. please accept my apologies.
Pavarotti, your voice was like a sunshine. ¿Like a sunshine I said? It was the sun itself !!! Luminous and glittering !!!
Sarcastic. But that's why i put k lol as a response. I don't even bother with Potters. They all think he's better than Pav or any other real opera singer.
@xLaughingManX ,Did not know there were so many people so mad. That's what marketing does to people. The problem is not Paul Potts but when the singer is recognized by critics and is not so good.
my recording of La boheme arrived recently and i just finished watching it. it was a 1977 recording at the met with a rather young and seemingly vibrant pavarotti. A fantastic performance by the entire crew is an understatement. Pavarotti was a very convincing rudolfo
For those posting on the "High C", here, it's technically a B natural - they took it down a half-step for this performance. ^_^ Still amazing, nonetheless!
@turkishdelight6983 Thanks dude I thought that was a C made by Luciano Pavarotti as you said "still amazing" and Mirella had an orgasm with this note hahaha
:-) Hai ragione!! A proposito: Canti come tenore giusto!!?? :-) Dimmi, ciao!! ;-)
@totoplanet Incredibile Salvatore Bellia!! Ho visto alcune registrazioni in una canta "Di quella pira" pezzo molto difficile!! Complimenti!!!
@totoplanet Lo so!!
Riuscirai come me e tanti altri a coniugare lavoro e studio, basta organizzarsi.
Ciao Luciano

my recording of La boheme arrived recently and i just finished watching it. it was a 1977 recording at the met with a rather young and seemingly vibrant pavarotti. A fantastic performance by the entire crew is an understatement. Pavarotti was a very convincing rudolfo

For those posting on the "High C", here, it's technically a B natural - they took it down a half-step for this performance. ^_^ Still amazing, nonetheless!

We were lucky to have shared our planet both with the genius that wrote this music and the genius that sang it here. They will both live forever.

Kiepura sings it the best , full of poetry.
This is vulgar at best and aims only
for loud notes .

I had the good fortune to see Pavorotti three times at the Met. This version seems a bit too fast. I wonder if it's the recording?

AndreaChenier1977 1 year ago
AndreaChenier1977 1 year ago
totoplanet 1 year ago
@totoplanet Appunto!! :-) :-) GRANDISSIMO!!! BIG LUCIANO!!! Ciao!! ;-)
Giova00587 1 year ago

:-) Hai ragione!! A proposito: Canti come tenore giusto!!?? :-) Dimmi, ciao!! ;-)
Giova00587 1 year ago
Ciao

@totoplanet Incredibile Salvatore Bellia!! Ho visto alcune registrazioni in una canta "Di quella pira" pezzo molto difficile!! Complimenti!!! Grazie!!
Giova00587 1 year ago

@totoplanet Lo so!!
Giova00587 1 year ago
Riuscirai come me e tanti altri a coniugare lavoro e studio, basta organizzarsi.
