This is essential and stands up to the scrutiny of time - unlike Kid Jensen.
It 'rocks', is genuine and cool - despite being something of a parody, and it speaks poetically. Jensen comes across like John's geography teacher - just about approving of the relative AOR sounds of Blondie's 'Picture This' . I want to grab him by the shirt collar and spit 'what kind of DJ can't identify new Rock n Roll when they hear it!?'
great memories bought this on single aug 1978/a true classic 78/79 great memories leaving school ....sony walkmans, lee cooper jeans, tiswas, chips, incredible hulk, crossroads, return of the saint ian ogilvy, disco music, power cuts, rubbish strikes, bjorn borg 79 champ, maggie thatcher i could go on..
Fuck me I still like this song after all this time.
Hearing it again, he sounds a bit like a very effete John Lydon (a stretch, I know) crossed with Frank from Some Mothers Do 'ave 'em (The Phantom Of The Opera guy).
its funny, i agree, its totally priceless and defines the era as much as any proper punk release. But at the time, the song was written and released as a satire of punk- the point was here's this guy with nothing to sing about except run-of-the-mill teenage angst, with a band that can hardly play but do a good line in looking cool and oh so bored. it's total genius, but what else would you expect from the man who went on to create the mighty John Shuttleworth?
In reply to Stoneroses13 I would like to say simply that Jilted John were 30 years ahead of their time. Whether or not Gordon is a puff is open to debate.
I think a certain pioneer of the Britpop movement based his early image and singing style on Jilted John. I'm not saying who...leaving it for people to guess
i bought this single...i still have it...its even more hilarious now....yeh yeh its not fair...im so upset....yeh yeh its not fair.... brilliant and funny xxxx
I haven't heard this song since it first came out. What a classic. I remember as kids it was the in thing to call someone we hated a moron, just because of this song.Brilliant.lol

The backing band could almost be from The Fall.
Which I like.
