  • Yes this adaptation is fine indeed and yet the story is so brilliant that I didn't care for the 'artistic license' they took at the beginning...as scholars as commented the best Sherlock Holmes are amongst the finest short stories in the English language. Sir Conan Doyle was a genius!

  • Pause on 7:41 and it looks like a bobble head Holmes :D

  • Helen is hot....extremely stunning

  • 8:18 what the Hell is Watson eating?

  • @maddyreid18 Could be an overdone kipper...I remember my grandad liking his kippers crispy like that...x

  • @Prioress1 Ohh, that makes sense. I don't personally care for seafood of any kind, but kippers are the exception. I love salty food for breakfast.

  • "Ha ha ha ha! What a very amiable person!" Hilarious! I love this scene with the blustering Doctor and cool Mr. Holmes!!! What a total delight!!!

  • Beautiful Jeremy Brett!!!!! What a delicious pleasure to watch him as Sherlock!!!

  • I love how terribly camp yet manly Jeremy's Sherlock is;)

  • Happy Birthday Jeremy, you are missed:')

  • How handsome Brett is!!!! XDXD

    Best Holmes ever!!!!!

  • Holmes is so handsome in this episode, I mean, exceptionally gorgeous (in Solitary Cyclist)...

  • thats what english gentlemen do to comfort a lady...pour her some tea-it works everytime

  • *slowly bends metal rod*...."I'm a dangerous man..." haha

  • "Let us meet again at one under the clock at Waterloo Station.... That is, if you have finished your breakfast by then."

Love that sly little dig at Watson!

  • "I'm a dangerous man to fall foul of."

    Storms out

    silence

    then-

"Thank you, Mrs Hudson. Just another client."

Got to love Holmes's cool in the face of madness. <3

  • 5:40 Love Watson's overreaction to Roylat's (sure I spelled that wrong) sudden appearance

  • Watch Brett's expression at 6:00+ as he comes up from the chair. This is the face of a man who's sinking his teeth into a juicy adventure.

  • Brett was indeed on top of his powers around this time. And such a good look (coming from a straight male). The Adventures are the best of his acting although the Return may have some even better episodes. There are few actors who can achieve so much with their acting.

  • "These are very deep waters" 2:45-2:49

Christ, I've rarely heard a line so well delivered.

  • 7:12 Doth mine eyes deceive me, did Holmes just SWALLOW? He's never shown fear at such a show of streangth. 7:39-7:44 he looks like he's been stabed in the back!

  • 7:12 Doth mine eyes deceive me, did Holmes just SWALLOW? He's never shown fear at such a show of streangth.

  • Thumbs up if you are watching this to help you with your Schoolwork/coursework

  • 5:45 reaction shot!

  • Watson, the original LLCoolJ.

  • The girl playing Helen is totally HOT!!!!! Wow!

  • @neeraj2608 Agreed! Her nose is adorable.

  • 8:24 - "Doctors' Commons" was a depository for wills, although by the time of this story, the depository had been shifted to Somerset House in London.

  • hahah love his face as he straightens the poker XD hilarious :3

  • First time I saw this, I thought Holmes looked like a James Bond. To all those Holmes superfans out there, please don't have a go at me. I'm only watching this to help me with my English coursework.

  • Comment removed

  • @02Voices01Song Jeremy Brett was actually a candidate for the James Bond role (but Roger Moore got the part instead I think?) : )

  • @swan240687 well he auditiond for "OHMSS" but lost to George Lazenby and then for live and let die he lost to Roger Moore

  • @MrSherlockWatson indeed they made wrong choices! Jeremy Brett could have been a much compelling Bond than they were...although it's hard to surpass Sean Connery ;)

  • @wincipoet true, true :)

  • YOU ARE DIVINE, JEREMY BRETT, AND YOUR ACTING IS BRILLIANT FULLSTOP

  • Thanks so much for uploading! SUCH a brilliant episode - Brett is absolutely fantastic as Holmes :)

    {around 6.39-6.42 I saw a definite Hugh Jackman resemblence - how odd :P}

  • I hate to sound morbid, but her death was described as far more violent and terrible in the book....

  • @Lyrictheac It probably would have been. From what I've heard, poisonous snakebites can produce gruesome symptoms (spasms, vomiting, etc.), but I don't think she would've died that quickly in real life. I would think that it would take at least a few minutes, rather than seconds. Either way, not a good way to go.

  • @cadetgj Not a good way at all....

  • I am sorry Peter Cushing and other Holmes actors fans but Brett IS the ONLY Holmes there ever will be. Yes, that is a fact.

  • His face at 3:27 is beautiful!

  • @catherinespark

Agreed.. :) but I always considered him exceptionally beautiful in this episode for some reason <3

  • Oh my god, the fire poker is the best. XD

  • i LOVE the originals and im very proud to say i understand more and more every time i watch it =P

  • Is it weird for me to say I think he looks absolutely ADORABLE at 6:38/6:43???? >.< lol I think, personally, that 6:17-6:52 is one of my favorite scenes of Sherlcok Holmes now x)) omg!! And the part from 7:24-7:48 You go Holmes!! =D lol and 8:36-8:50 Wow, I just must really love this episode!! Love the great sense of humor! This one's deffinitely as good as the original story board for it. But they make poor Watson look like he cares more about food and sleep than the original xP

  • @demicassy: Oh gosh, same here! Those little amused smirks are absolutely KILLING me! I don't know what it is.. that mixture of male charisma with a tiny tough of feminie charm. If that makes sense. ;)

  • @Trampadoo hahahaha lmao I think I get it, but I watched that part a couple times, admittedly, so I think I should....>.> haha jk, well...not really, but hey! When something is *that* cute, it shouldn't do ignored xP

  • Is it weird for me to say I think he looks absolutely ADORABLE at 6:38/6:43???? >.< lol I think, personally, that 6:17-6:52 is one of my favorite scenes of Sherlcok Holmes now x))

  • Mmm i like that Holmes likes zzest! in a case.

  • @hadassah179 rofl hahahaha xD '......in a case.....' right ^_~ hahaa, sorry, just that was a funny thought.... you know all 'mmmmm I like that Sherlock Holmes likes zest! ;D' one moment, then the little tagged on '...in a case.' at the end xD lol

  • Such a good story I read this in my english class its so awesome

  • Ooooh, I LOVE this Granada adaptations of Sherlock Holmes stories. I love Jeremy Brett and oth the other cast, I love how they reconstruct that period. Brilliant!

  • i love how he doesn't close the door although holmes asks him to xD

  • I love the scoff and the get the hell out order!!

  • why dr.watson freak out???

  • Jeremy is just brilliant here!!!

  • Who ever got the eyes please get back at me, I got them!!!!

  • toothbrush!!!!! LOL

  • what is he eating?

  • @AttemptedAnime He's eatin 'is bacon =D lol

  • @AttemptedAnime No, wait, I think those our frog legs..... D= is it just my imagination????

  • lecherous, sinister, villain

  • I love this movie!

  • Fantastic acting

  • How does the doctor train a snake with a saucer of milk and a whistle? Snakes can't hear. They feel vibrations, so if he stomped his foot, the snake might have heard him. Of course it would have just ran off. You can't train a snake. Serpents will not come when you whistle. Also, if they drank milk, foreign lactose, they would likely die.

  • Why do they never gasp out who or what killed them in the moments before they die? Surely if Julia had said 'snake' it would have been easier than 'speckled band' and made more sense. But then, I guess there would have been no mystery to solve -.-

  • @Raeyven76

When I read the story I thought, by the darkness, she didn't know it was a snake, she only saw a "speckled band."

  • Is the adventure of the speckled band on the new sherlock holmes film? In the UK :)xx anyone know?

  • the look of excitement on holmes face...priceless

  • Wow....i'm completely besotted....6:37...Brett's tiny grins are nothing short of magical :-D

  • This is the first episode of the show I saw. Caught it randomly on TV. it also happens to be my favorite story, and Grimsby Roylott my favorite villain. I knew what I was watching when he bent the poker, and have been a fan since. God bless dear Jeremy Brett. :)

  • LOL holmes looks so bored at 0:43

  • I discovered Jeremy Brett approximately two weeks ago, and at 6:38 also discovered tonight he really is GORGEOUS! Oh, and, ah, superb acting. XD

  • It was Norris, Chuck Norris.

  • I love JB's smile makes me swoon :) Amazing acting by both Jeremy and David as always :)

  • That bacon seems a little bit TOO crispy :)

  • 3:25

"Shh, Watson, this is the best part!"

  • Very well acted, a pleasure to watch (it is Brett, after all!).

The story itself is simple. I wonder why the cause of death wasn't established... Was this kind of thing hard to identify back then? I don't think so.

  • Well, do not forget it was a country doctor who investigated. He would have known next to nothing about snake poison, and the two tiny punctures are really hard to see if you are not looking. The story is flawed, nevertheless - Doyle did not know much about snakes, and it shows in the way the doctor treats his pet :-) Still, a great story!!

  • Loving it!!

Is it just me or does JB sound a lot like Alan Rickman?

  • 2:46-2:50, when he says "These are very deep waters"... Woah. o_o

  • Ever since I read the part when Dr. Roylott barges in and threatens Holmes, I knew it was going to be one hilarious scene to look at...and it indeed was! :D Especially when Holmes/Brett tries to unbend the poker, his facial expression is so funny! And at 7:12 after Roylott curls the poker and drops it on the table, Holmes gives that look of, "Oh good lord 0__0 Glad that wasn't me." XDD

  • if you thought that was funny, you should watch the 1964 version of this story...the Dr. Roylott in that version was downright hysterical. I laughed everytime he came on screen!

Douglas Wilmer's portrayal of Holmes in that adaptation and Jeremy Brett's portrayal in this one are by far the best I've seen.

  • Ah, I remember that part from the book very well, it made me chuckle :P

    '"You are Holmes, the meddler."

    My friend smiled.

    "Holmes, the busybody!"

    His smile broadened.

    "Holmes, the Scotland Yard Jack-in-office!"

    Holmes chuckled heartily.'

Fav because I do not want to lose that laugh :P

  • Oh, that smile...

  • 7:26 "Thank you Mrs. Hudson. Just another client." :P

    lol :D

  • 3:26-3:34

Watch how that fire comes into his eyes and his face just lights up as something dawns on him. :P

    Brett is the best. :P

6:00-8:00 is great too. Holmes is just as cool as a cucumber :D

  • miss stoner was hot by the looks of her.

  • 6:37-6:52 Best part ever! I love the way that smile really fights along his mouth then the way he says "Your conversation is really most entertaining-if you would close the door.../on your way out/ as there is a decided draft." Holmes is the best!

  • i agree.

  • @Nightsfield And Brett is decidedly the best too!

  • im actually watching this coz my school uses sherlock holmes for literature D: lit exam tomorow!

  • Very Very Interesting. :)

  • Roylott's expression at 6:26 always makes me laugh XD

  • Holmes statement to the guy about leaving translates to :"don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out."

  • 6:42 - I LOVE his laugh!

  • Haha. I love Watson's jump. He looks so confused.

  • Sherlock Holmes: The Last Poker-benders!!!

  • Poor poker. It never hurt anyone.

  • ROFL!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • He is a good very likeness of Sherlock Holmes. Even in temperament.

  • Her voice is very sexy. It's somewhat gravelly and deep. I like that.

We watched this in my detective fiction class. It's very good.

  • I kind of wonder if Jeremy Brett was the Sherlock Holmes they based Basil on in The Great Mouse Detective (im a Holmes addict, okay?), becuse their manner and laugh are very similar.

  • No, TGMD was based on Basil Rathbone...older holmes actor

  • Dragonkinght do you have the first two bits of this episode or were they mislabelled?

  • My gosh... Jeremy Brett is the incarnation of Holmes!

And I'm speaking as a person who owns the entire canon and has read over half...

    *hugs Jeremy Brett* He's amazing!

  • @plutoniumtangent I know what you mean by that. I was amazed the first time I saw a Sherlcokk Holmes episode! It was just like...wowness!! lol He captures Holmes pretty well, I don't think anyone could have done a much better job cept for RDJ, but I only say that b/c he brings a lot of life to Holmes, plus the fact that he's pretty hilarious xP)

  • @plutoniumtangent Well I always thought it was Basil Rathbone, but I can't complain about Jeremy Brett.

  • jeremy brett is a badass

  • is it my imagination, or does holmes look younger in this episode then in the first eipsode of the series? Not that I'm complaining. :) he is one tasty, talented dish. I only wish I had been born 10yrs earlier so that I could have known him while he was alive.

  • I like Brett's split second laughs "hahahahaha-what an amiable person" It's very interesting :P

  • I agree, it's hilarious, and very well done. It's different from how I read it in the books, but Jeremy Brett's interpretation makes it even funnier than it already is.

  • Jeremy Brett,mmmm....yes

  • Where is Part 1 and Part 2?

  • Yeah, I noticed that too. Think they've been removed...P.s. Jeremy Brett RULES!

  • jeremy Brent is a God. Thank you. D.N. More please!!!

  • I want one of those sexy pocket watches. The Speckled Band is more famous of the Holmes stories since kids read it in school and stuff. I love Holmes.

  • Come on 5:45 just what is going on with dude's hair!!!!! He has a wild man bush going on(lol).

  • See at 0:57 the contrast between Watson and Holmes. While the doctor is pouring tea and asking the lady with sympathetic voice, Holmes is suddenly interrupting him with an emotionless tone, asking a concrete question. Only in a second the viewers can see revealed the temperament difference between the two friends.

The same is at 4:18-4:19 :

Watson:"I`d say it`s time for some breakfast"

    Holmes:"There are thousand details...etc"

  • anyone knows where I can get the story but with subtitles too in English??? and chapters 1 and 2?? thanks!

  • Wheres one and two???????? Please post them.

  • Where are parts 1 and 2? Cheers, Mike

  • dr watson's suggestions are so funny!! ...well its funny how he makes them :D

  • sherlock sounds just like snape!

  • Haha, I thought that at first too! Especially when he talks slowly with a deep emphasis. But Jeremy tends to be a bit more cheery than Alan Rickman as Snape...I would love to see them at it in a witty conversation (if only Brett was still alive). Wizard vs. Muggle....XD

  • Haha, make that Wizard vs. Genius.

  • And both are my favourite fictional character :D

  • i cant find parts 1 and 2. is it not there? or is iy going to be uploaded?

  • He sounds just like Jeremy Irons. Oh, and the one who acted with Nigel Bruce was Basil Rathbone. He's my fave, but this guy isn't bad either.

  • brett's is the man himself...

  • Is there parts 1 and 2?

  • *sigh* jeremy looks incredibly handsome at 6:43, dont u think? *sigh*

  • yes yes he is handsome. Why do you sigh?you like to be in love?

  • i sight because it's Jeremy Brett we are talking about! This man is my idol, and one of the greatest actors to ever walk the planet! So yes, even though he is *gulp* dead, I am in love with him.

  • ha ha You know there were great actors in this world especially in plays rather than on movies. You cannot judge an actor on his face, and i am sure all actors look beautiful. i like monty python actors though.

  • I know! I'm still trying to see if there is any videos taken of him on stage. If you see any, please let me know

  • well google it, or youtube it or wikipedia it. I dont know this actor, my favurite Sherlockhomes is the ne who says like "my dear wattson" and he did with "Nigel Bruce"

  • All of the Sherlock Holmes should say "My dear Watson" if they are truely dedicated to their role, because that is what is written in the original story. But thats my opinion. Wait... YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF JEREMY BRETT? Girl, I may be young, but even I know the 60-80's actor. Weird.

  • well you are not wiered, and its ok to like old actors because they were better with deep quotes an deep script

  • It IS weird though! And you will think so too once you hear my age, and the fact that I first heard of Jeremy Brett around 4 months ago!!!!!

  • nah nah there there. I know more historyy than you do

  • oh, gee, thats reasuring! gosh.

  • Looks like we've been looking over different Toxicon books, and I wonder at why you never gave me the link to which you visited to read the abstract, so we could've avoided this whole useless arguement about whether your information was fictional or not.

  • I gave you information for you to find the source yourself. I'm not responsible for the fact that you latch on to the first Toxicon article from Vol. 37, Issue #4, see that it is about mussels, have an "Aha" moment thinking that you've found the chink in my armor and then begin to criticize me for it. And WE have not been arguing about whether my information is fictional or not, you have.

  • If the autopsy revealed that the cause of death wasn't a psychological trauma, as the pathologists from this mystery first proposed, they would move onto looking for a more distinct physical damage to the brain where they would find the toxin.

  • 1. My initial question was & still remains what were the pre-ELISA methods to detect snake venom? 2. Never said that you continued this debate for public interest, I said that the public probably doesn't care so we should shift this debate to the personal comments page. 3. You mean Christie fan, not Queen fan, right? 4. As I stated previously, I plan to e-mail the editor of Toxicon to ask him or her to either answer the question or refer me to the best material to answer this question.

  • Toxicon is the name of a journal, it's not a book. In fact, their website describes the journal as "an interdisciplinary journal on the toxins derived from animals, plants, and microorganisms." Which means that I certainly selected an appropriate journal to get information from if I do say so myself. Second, the first article in Volume 37, Issue #4 is the one on snake venoms. The only way I could have made it easier for you was if I sent you the article as a PDF attachment.

  • Since Toxicon is a journal about toxins I have decided that a more sensible approach would be to contact the editor of the journal and ask him or her about 19th century venom detection methods. I can tell you what they say, give you their contact information, or you could find the contact information at their website. I will defer to their judgement. What I won't do is continue to devote as much time to this debate as I have already. Otherwise, I won't have time for more important things.

  • To conclude, my plan is as follows: e-mail editor of Toxicon to get answer or a suggestion for place to get answer; will accept whatever answer they give or answer found from source they suggest; will pass info. on to you or give you contact info. so you can verify on your own (you can accept or reject said information); in the meantime, will return to my life - work, socialize, hobbies. I will respond to any subsequent comments of yours, but not as frequently as thus far - life's too short.

  • it thouroughly pisses me off when someone posts a great video but doesnt have part one and two.

  • I hated this affair. I've been wrecking my brain, trying to solve this mystery but I just never could. Why? Because there's no such thing as an undetectable poison and because of this my entire belief to the cause of the woman's death was that it was a very deep psychological trauma. I was lead astray by the impossibility created by Conan Doyle. The soultion really pissed me off.

  • How do we know that there is no "undetectable" poison. There may be one you know. It may be so good that it's errrr.........."undetectable". Good day to you sir.

  • There is no lethal poison that can't be detected. These undetectable poisons are fictional substances made to create "impossible murders" in crime novels more complicated.

  • To be fair, a poison is only detectable when there is a method to detect it. During the time frame when these stories were based, whatever snake venom was used may not have shown up using whatever testing methods existed at that time. For example, before the Marsh test, which was developed during the 1800s, there was no scientific test for arsenic poisoning. That means that arsenic would be considered an undetectable poison until that test was developed.

  • Believe me, there was no unaccountable animal poison in the late 19th century. The type of poison you're talking about is man made, and developed so that it can't be detected. We're talking about nature's production. There's no way this story's poison was in existence even back then.
