This is one of, if not the, most beautiful scene of all time. The cruel contrast of love and misery makes the scene heartbreakingly tragic, yet so, so, touching. Even though their story didn't work out, through all of Deply's exasperated sighs and tears, you still get the feeling that love exists.
how julie says the, "There's so much water under the bridge. It's not even about you anymore. It's about that moment in time that is forever lost...." is so powerful. that part was particularly so well acted and so real, even the way she brushes her hair out of her face and the pacing of her words. so beautiful.
Celine's grief and anguish is so real. I want to hold her and tell her it is going to be okay. When Jesse tells her about how 9 years away from her changed his life you suddenly understand that these were two people who were supposed to be together. They changed each other by spending that one evening and night together and nothing they had since then could ever measure up. I felt like that once ... love is real and making the wrong decision is life altering.
@ptlump You're correct in saying that making a wrong decision can be life altering this is something that i have experienced in my own life in making a huge error in judgement. However it also has to do with timing-People cross our paths at different times in our lives however is that something we have control over? Or does Destiny actually exist? It is quite possible that although Celine and Jesse love one another very much that it is something that was not meant to be.
@NocturneKing One of the subthemes of the movie is the contrast between Celine's fatalism and Jesse's belief that you make your own destiny - or that its just blind luck. (Their discussion on the boat.) As for me, I think our lives are the result destiny (or fate), chance and our choices. I agree that so much is timing or just plain old luck; but just how much does God pull the strings? I also wonder if women tend to be more fatalistic than men?
@ptlump Celine & Jesse made the decision upon first meeting of not exchanging information with one another which could be the reason why things worked out the way it did for them ( So in essence,Did they create their own fate?)..Jesse however has the notion that he creates his own destiny,Is this realistic? How many things happen to people in their lives that they did not plan on or choose for themselves?
