Even if you come to think of it. VW managed to built a serial Passat that goes 60mpg and that with an engine bearing about 200hp. If you now realize, that a Passat (Blue Motion in this case) has a weight of approximately 1.6t you ought to notice what a car that is. And now taking into consideration, that the fuel tank is able to conatin like 20gallons, you see what kind of journeys you can make with it.
Diesel hybrids are coming. 70-80 mpg is already being achieved outside North America with the non-hybrid VW Polo and Lupo 3-cyl diesels. Hybrid diesels should have no problem getting 100+ mpg.
51mpg wow. But doesn't Diesel fuel cost alot more (or a little bit?) than the standard 87-octane (regular) fuel at gas stations? hopefully the engine will offset the cost of diesel fuel, for the efficiency of it. :)
Diesel is currently 13% higher than gas due to seasonal flucuation. It was the same price a couple of months ago and will likely come back down to the same price or even lower than gas next spring. The price per mile in a car getting 51 mpg is far less than a comparable gas version of the same car. It's a no-brainer to go diesel if fuel cost is your primary consideration. Diesel cars also last longer and have much higher resale value and are much more fun to drive.
Right now, gas down the street is $3.45, so $40 will get a 35 mpg Prius 11.5 gallons of gas, and about 405 miles until it needs to fill up. Assuming a 35 cent difference in price per gallon, that $40 will get about 10.5 gallons of diesel, which at 51 mpg would get me 535 miles until I needed to fill up.
But, the price difference at the gas station is only 10 cents right now, so I would get 574 miles for the same fuel cost of a Prius going 405 miles.

this is interesting. i always wondered why the europeans do not really have hybrid like prius/civic. their answer was the diesel engines.
i guess the next step is to have a diesel/electric engine on priuses/civics! that should be good for 70-80mpg?!
