  • I love this version. Everyone I ever show this to hates it, but I think its great. Cool take on the song, and everyone is having a good time playing it. What more could you want?

  • Detractors: nobody will ever come up with a better version than Warren Zevon---it was pure genius. But what are you: haters of ska...and creativity in general? Respect to a different take on it. I like Zevon's more too, but cool off.

  • a bit reggaeish

  • What sort of abomination is this?!

  • gotta love David's vibey guitar.

  • Sorry, I have the biggest respect for David Lindley but this cover is just "HORRIBLE"!

  • @WarrenZevonAddict

Effectivement, je n'ai pas reconnu l'originale... Mais c'est David! ;)

  • @ClydeJB2 Et on lui pardonne tout!

  • Ouch, this god awful shit

  • suit cover warren is way better

  • im playin thz in band lovev it

  • Brilliant cover

  • just horrible.....

  • The movie "WOLF" with Jack Nicholson was a pretty nice movie :P

  • Love this line up, but my lord is it influenced by Zappa or WHAT!!!!

  • wtf is this...such a bad cover

  • RIP

Hiram and Smitty (William D Smith)

    soloing in the hereafter

  • It's weird but great. Warren obviously approved as they maintained a lifelong friendship.

  • Viva El Rayo !!! what a band, this is a treasure, thanks for uploading

  • The bass player is Jorge Calderón.

  • Comment removed

  • This is so weird that it's good. Did he sing "I'd like to meet Liz Taylor"?

  • @Warjacki I'd like to meet his taylor.

  • don't forget about the drummer OH / he played with weather report, sting etc.. etc....

    Who is the bassist ?

  • Music evolves, changes, and becomes a part of each musician. You are allowed to have different feelings if you are translating a piece of art. If we don't evolve or appreciate new views, we die. I don't like this as I love Warren's version, but I respect it and enjoy it. It's neat! See my channel. I have anything of Warren's I can find on my Warren Zevon playlist, but this is still a great version and Lindley is a superb musician. A true master! Thanks for the video posting!

  • And with David Sanborn on saxophone and Hiram Bullock on comp guitar.

    Oh my gosh!

  • David and Warren were friends, Ive seen them perform together on stage. Look at all of the videos of David Lindley on You Tube and you will understand what kind of musician he is.

  • Or, Jackson Browne was one of their friends...What the Hell does it matter? It was L.A. in the 60's and everybody knew and played with everybody.

"Could've been passable?" Warren loved this version of his song.

    Go away and stay there.

  • David knows how to entertain! I Love it! I was blessed with seeing Dave play a couple of times in the past two years, and his show has transformed, but he never disappoints.

@JimiBLong, David Lindley and Warren Zevon were good friends, and even played on stage together at times. They were both part of Jackson Browne's talented circle of friends and songwriters.

You should hear Lindley play his Saz or Oud nowawadays. He's talented no doubt!

  • Could've been passable if he wrote his own lyrics that fit this song rather than pretending it was a cover of Warren Zevon and completely ruining it. (Warren Zevon, I'm sorry this fool did this to your masterpiece).

  • At like 1:30 it sound like a gay orgy!

  • AUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHH HUEVOS REDONDOS !!!!

  • This album is fantastic! I was so lucky to have seen Lindley perform twice in a small nightclub. He and his band were simply amazing!

  • "Told you about the anchovies, George Duke."

  • I've never heard David Lindley play, before now and for the love of all that's good about music, I hope that I never EVER do again!! THAT WAS A HORRIBLE COVER OF A LEGENDARY SONG!!!!!!!

  • The black guy is Hiram Bullock. He's an extraordinary guitarist who I first saw playing with David Lettermen's band.

  • Why all the dislikes? I guess people are a little close-minded when it comes to music.... or just covers.

I think this is a fantastic take on it.

  • Lol just saw him a couple weeks ago w JB ! He's so cool

  • LOVE THIS COVER!

  • what guitar plays lindley here?

  • digging davids teisco del ray guitar ; )

  • Brilliant cover...almost as good as Lindley's pants.

No point in covering a song if it sounds like the original.

    I really miss this show.

  • sweet version, tonne of fun amazing they could wrangle this out of a 3 chord progression lol

  • its like he made his own song and couldnt come up with any words so he stuck werewolves of london in.

  • WTF did he do to the song?

  • This is awesome! This is better than the original I think...

  • Lame cover.

  • LOVE THIS!

  • Auw-ooh!

  • WA HOOO

  • I always loved Hiram Bullock's guitar style and sound. Great feel to any song. R.I.P Hiram!!!!

  • A nice song for the new movie "The Wolfman" :D

  • David's also a huge reggae fan, and an incredible slide player for Jackson Browne....this is a fun album..you just have to go with it !

  • @Samagorny

Seems you lack musical sophistication. Just go replay the original and be happy that nothing changes.

  • imma gonna see him on friday \/\/007!!!

  • love this version!

  • comedy act? that tall black dudes dancin makes me laugh....lol

  • FYI....back when this was made...the punk music started with this sorta beat and it was excellent fop getting wasted and bouncing around dancing like that...try it...I did

  • great performance thanks for posting

I can't understand these other losers

    thanks

  • man this isn't nearly as good as the david lindley studio version of this song. if i heard this first i wouldn't have ever got into lindley's stuff

  • How many pickups does a guitar need?

  • @lierxagerate it depends on the type of guitar

  • 0 if it's acoustic. an electric needs at least one to be amplified. from there is basicly however many the player wants. most guitars dont have more than 3. i prefer 2 on my guitars

  • lindley plays violin anything with strings...watch him with Jackson brownw..underated.

  • Beautiful Teisco de Rey guitar from the 60's.

  • RIP Hiram.

  • It would have been easy for him to do just "any old cover", instead he did something different with it, and did it very well too.

He's [Lindley] a brilliant musician (as to be honest this whole band is).

Bit of a talking head groove in parts.

  • i totally hear talking heads, too...thats funny...davids great

  • He is a genius but trully this is crap!

  • i learned all my dance moves from the black guy playin guitar haha

  • see if you get this joke, this guy's head is as big as jim gilette's hair used to be ...

  • This is a different cover reggee sounding. But for all the people that say this guy is shit he is acutually one on the very best session musicians alive and is highly sought after. he can play every string instrument and has played on countless albums with rock stars.

  • ...and he has the COOLEST guitars!

  • Different,but SHIT !

  • You're just jealous of his pants.

  • LOVE ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  • Dont know about Omar Hakim, but thats David Sanborn on sax.

    Bloody brilliant cover, very original.

  • Omar Hakim on drums ?

  • Wierd song :P, but with cool solo's and funny lyrics :D

  • Good shit maaan <3

  • bra musik <3

    David Lindley

  • not a bad cover. not bad at all

  • If I remember right David played on Warrens version of this song as well as many others from him

  • Lindley played on some Zevon tunes, but not on Werewolves. That was Wachtel, McVie, Fleetwood

  • I'm pretty sure he's playing a Teisco guitar. Crazy. So do I.

  • I didnt understand a word he says, but its a great song :D

  • I dont know there version of the song I find isnt as good as the original. It just seems to making it into some retro/disco song. I just seem to like the tone Warren Zevon brought to his own song

  • Great - very melodic as well as well as edgy reggae beat . The black guy's solo is fantastic - anyone know who he is ?

  • >> he black guy's solo is fantastic - anyone know who he is ?

That is the late, great Hiram Bullock.

  • Really? Wow, I've always heard of him as an amazing player but never heard him!

  • Yeah, I have my own substance problems but Hiram let them do him in.

  • Yeah Really. Me too.

  • This is great, one of my favorite songs with a reggae twist...brilliant!

  • Welllllllllll

we don't need to go xXMusicJunkiexXxx ' s

channel and tell him what asshole he is because it is closed.

As for "what the hell is this?" and "garbage" let's start a list of albums that David Lindley has made more superb by his contributing his lap steel (although rarely his vocals) -

    Runnin' On Empty, perchance?

alonzogarbanzo - wish my name was so cool!

I"ll have to see if anyone on YouTube is already using my next rock band name,

    "Cotton Pony."

    Happy Spring!!!

  • "we don't need to go xXMusicJunkiexXxx ' s

channel and tell him what asshole he is because it is closed."

    good riddance i say

  • Great band, great bandleader, great day in the morning.

  • a good song for getting up on a sunny spring sunday morning moaning ... :))

  • Fucking great. Lindley is so awesome...

  • wow what an interesting cover. the two songs sound nothing alike yet they're both cool in their own ways.

  • Hiram Bullock RIP

  • what the hell is this?...way to ruin a great song...tomfoolery

  • unclench those uptight butt cheeks and dance sparky

    you must be caucasian

  • negative

i'll dance when i'm damn well ready to...and it sure as hell won't be to this garbage

  • Damn I miss this show. I remember watching this when it aired and have not seen it since until now.

I remember enjoying it so much, especially David Sanborn's solo.

    Lindley is so cool.

  • What was the name of the show?

Also Lindley is a favorite, b/c of all the amazing instruments he could just pick up and play! However, I don't like this interpretation of Zevon's song.

  • Pretty decent remake. It's pretty hard to screw up a classic song like this one. Unfortunately, somehow or another, someone finds a way.

  • Yes they did.

  • Jackson Browne actually did a cover of Werewolves of London too. I wish i could find it

  • Lindley also played a lot of slide guitar for Jackson Browne.

This is one of my favorite cover songs!

  • >> no one should remake an already great song

Yeah. Hendrix should never have covered The Trogg's "Wild Thing." Joe Cocker should never have covered The Beatle's "With a little help from my friends." etc.

    What a bunch of losers.

  • What would be the use of doing a note for note rendition? You picked a good selection of songs to make your point and I salute you.

  • What about "All Along the Watchtower", possibly the best cover ever. Or Stevie Ray Vaughans covering Jimi? Or the Who with Shakin all Over. Covering songs is a tribute to an inspirational artist, even when done badly, as alot are. Great songs can, by getting covered, become something even greater, for the new meanings and feelings the cover provides will open your eyes to new details in the original....

  • Yes.

  • Shit! I recognise Omar Hakim behind the drums, and that's gotta be David Sanborn on sax, but is that also George Duke on keyboards. That's one fucking great band!

  • >> That's one fucking great band!

That's the house band for the Night Music show. Check out my channel for more clips with this same band and many more fantastic musicians.

  • The guitar player looks like the late Hiram Bullock...David Lindley has so much class!

  • Thanks for the feedback, guys. I appreciate it.

  • El Rayo-X! What a fun band.

  • this is gayer than AIDS. This is more like shitty gay bands... of london.

  • Mr. Dave will bend you over and show you what yr missing fannybaws.

And you will like it more than you want to admit.

  • how does thinking dave lindley looks and plays like a faggot have anything to do with me being a fanboy. This is not only an insult to Warren Zevon but to reaggae music as well... and wtf is the deal with the gay sex sounds in the middle

  • An 'insult' to Warren Zevon and reaggae (sic) too eh? LOL!!!

Do you have 'issues' with homosexuality perhaps?

'gay sex sounds in the middle'. LOLOL!!!

    You fanny.

  • David Lindley got his start in Warren Zevons band. He and Warren were close friends until he died. Go to reggae on the river or any other reggae festival and ask about David Lindley and El Rayo-X and you will here nothing but good things and fond recollections of concerts.

  • Look man, I'm tired of arguing about this video... you make one joke about a song that you think sounds like shit and everyone jumps on you. Lighten up. I just don't like it. At all.

  • @ptof2 David got his start in Warren's band? That would be news to David. Try looking up Kaleidoscope, the band he and Chris Darrow formed long before anyone heard of Warren.

  • Jonmcroy thats pretty funny

    True also

This shit is fun for those muso musicians, all fucking bastards

  • Dude, shut up. That about covers it.

  • bra låt <3<3<3

  • complete shit

  • As yr moniker suggests Wayne. You don't have a scooby. After a half pint of cider, you will be dancing like a complete fud to this...

  • Very possible indeed

  • What a great version...and an even better musician Dave!!!!!!!

  • to put it politely,it is not to my taste[read into that what you will!!]

  • Love it!!! Lindley great! Zevon great! Jackson Great!

  • scmm42.. great vid...

chuckling at userUK saying it's horrible..

i've seen both lindley and warren zevon sing it live.. they were friends and warren loves lindley's version of his song..

hmmm, should lindley apologize it's not exactly like zevon's?

both have/had a great time with song.. so, methinks not...

    "very very greasy" good post!

  • is this even the same song? if so this is horrible

  • Sorry,I may have marked this as spam,I agree with you.

  • Why yes, yes it is the same song in a reggae timing. With added harmonies and a higher bpm. A very very good cover in my opinion.

  • Let's see-- Lindley, the ubiquitous Sandborn on sax, Hiram Bullock (now deceased) on lead guitar, looks like Omar Hakim on drums... Who am I missing? I don't recognize the keyboard players or bassist... I think this is an interesting take on the tune (ska version), but I'm of course a fan of Z's original.

  • Anyone else kind of feel this is Talking-Heads-a-la-Stop-Making-Sense-esque? Without the pretension, that is.

  • I never knew David Lindley until YouTube, found out how much done of a musician he is (Jackson Browne). Like Mavis, I hated this version at first - but you have to grow - and it is amusing.

  • sheeeeeite.

  • ruined the original

  • That's your opinion. Zevon and Lindley were close friends and I'm sure Zevon appreciated Lindley's interpretation, as do many other fans of both artists.

  • wtf is this? because this certainly werewolves of london

  • not liking it.

  • David Lindley is a great musician.

I swear him and Jack Nicholson were twins separated at birth.

  • Who was Mr Lindleys organist in this period? He is one of my absolute FAVS---so incredible........

  • William (Smitty) Smith - but I notice there's a second keyboard player in this video

  • tis I who's ever so stupid! I think I did see that 2nd keyboard in past viewing, ,but it is the organist (other to far right is maybe elec piano?) that I am such a fan of---thanks for hippin' me:-)appreciate that!

  • Hated it at first, but it's kind of growing on me, not too bad actually. WZ would approve i think.

  • Me too, hated it at first, but it's kind of growing on me.

I especially LIKE David's BURNS guitar!!!!

  • this sucks.

  • this is horrible..what a discredit to a great tune...

  • ohh man old school jools holland lol

  • Haha... I love David Lindley.

  • I don't like this version at all.

  • Check out the 'Night Hunger' film trailer if you want to see a great werewolf of London...

  • No-one's mentioned the Teisco!

  • Friggin' great!!! MR. DAVE!!!!

  • Here's a few points:

    1. David Lindley was actually performing this song long before Warren released it. It's on the well known 1975 Bryn Mawr tape with Jackson Browne in an arrangement close to this one.

    2. As others have said, Lindley played lap steel or violin on many Zevon recordings.

    3. This version is kinda weak because Lindley doesn't have his regular band at the time, El Rayo-X. It shouldn't have any sax, but I guess it was mandantory to give Sanborn a solo in every song on this show.

  • Zevon hired Lindley all the time. Lindley is a rhythm junkie with rock credentials for days. If anybody has prerogative to mess with a Zevon tune, Mr Dave has to be on the list. A worthy experiment, with some entertaining riffs / alt -lyrics. Settle down--it's only rock and roll...

  • dave is one of the greatest in the world!

lots os really stupid people making comments...man, you guys are just frying yourself..not knowing who "he" is...go and watch idol tomorrow

    WTF

  • I love the negative comments on this upload ... they are typical of the ignorance on the web. Only people who know and get Mr. Dave and Zevon appreciate this. It's awesome and fun and perfect in both versions. Zevon and Lindley were best friends. The whole point of the song is a joke as it is, yet these haters act as if the tune itself were a sacrament... Hilariously ill-informed and stupid they are. Warren is laughing somewhere at this, I'm sure... Bulldog

  • i think it helps to "get" this song if u get lindley is havfing a go at it by doing it ska style...to do a cover of this in the same style would be boring,,,,and he does say" i d like to meet liz taylor" funny man and prollyu the greatest or one of em him beck wash allman david phelps(swamismotel) slide guitarists on the planet imho...this sax player is like hilarious.....lindley could play the original backwards and half asleep kudos to zevon and lindley

  • may god have mercy upon your soul for what you did to a great song

  • Great Song!?!?

  • The singer looks like Roky Erickson

  • I like the black guy on guitar, he is having fun playing music. He makes me smile. This version sounds very happy, like summer, beer and just doin' nothing and having fun.

  • instead of "I'd like to meet his tailor" it sounds like "I'd like to meet Liz Taylor"...

  • It always cracks me up when people want the cover to sound just like the original...If you're ganna do someone elses song, mess with it! And with as much as Warren and Mr. Dave played together, I'm sure Mr. Z was fine with it!

  • I agree. Sure the original is classic, but this version is cool as well. Just shows how elastic songs can be. Couldn't imagine hearing it w
