I have spent days cutting the hooks off of 5 miles of longline gear to satisfy Captain Chuck Burrece that there are no hooks being dropped on top of a wreck. Imagine a pile of line 7 feet high with thousands of hooks to untangle and cut off. It was a very painful task and Dennis and I got no extra pay for doing it but, Captain Chuck is a beleiver that fishing gear should always remain attched to the boat!! Think about that for awhile before blasting me for killing the ocean!

We whack the hell out of halibut but, are prohibited from delivering it. Halibut are very tough and will survive many trips through the trawl. We have tied a string to their tail to sea how many times we caught the same fish in a season! However, we are required to "pay" an observer, from our own money, whether the trip is productive or not, 300 dollars a day to snitch on us for too much bycatch. All of these activities have an environmental impact - the food was produced on land that was once rainforest, your home, the shop the roads were once rainforest and the food/drink is produced on land that was once rainforest. The fishing industry is probably the most over regulated industry in the world.
Here in Scotland we are only allowed to go to sea 130 days per year. An average trip will last 8 days making 16 trips per year. Of those 16 trips 2 days will be spent steaming to and from the fishing grounds leaving 6 days fishing which is a total of 96 days a year. This means 269 days we dont catch or earn anything. Unlike other industries we dont receive a penny in subsidies either.

Most commercial fishermen will lie to the gills to justify there jobs. You don't have to be a scientist to determine what they are doing. no, shrimp live up river most of the year. they ride the tides out to spawn. we catch them on soft muddy bottom, bottom in wich is ever changing because of the tides and strong tropical systems we get down here. the shrimp spawn and the cycle continues.

I have spent days cutting the hooks off of 5 miles of longline gear to satisfy Captain Chuck Burrece that there are no hooks being dropped on top of a wreck. Imagine a pile of line 7 feet high with thousands of hooks to untangle and cut off. It was a very painful task and Dennis and I got no extra pay for doing it but, Captain Chuck is a beleiver that fishing gear should always remain attched to the boat!! Think about that for awhile before blasting me for killing the ocean!

I lost my own father to fishing when I was 7 so get off your high horses you landlubbers!! Never have you worked as hard or sacrificed as much as us multi-generational fishermen! We have lost hundreds of pots over the years from the icepack alone that now that I have switched to trawling, we have become the keepers of. When we do catch the gear that is still killing, we disable it and drop it on a wreck so as not to catch it again. We have all the wrecks marked and avoid them. So, we have paid the price for our profession. I tow around the bodies of lost family and friends.

We whack the hell out of halibut but, are prohibited from delivering it. Halibut are very tough and will survive many trips through the trawl. We have tied a string to their tail to sea how many times we caught the same fish in a season! However, we are required to "pay" an observer, from our own money, whether the trip is productive or not, 300 dollars a day to snitch on us for too much bycatch. Since I am at it, I will educate everyone who is interested to hear from a 30 year veteran who has been involved in every type of fishing. To continue, the crime does not lay on the practices of trawlers but much more on fishery policies. As already stated, trawling is the most efficient method of ocean harvesting! Everything can be caught in a trawl. The crime lies in the fact that we are only allowed (in my fishery) to deliver cod and pollack in the winter season.

Did you eat or drink anything else with those scallops, did you drive there, did you eat it in a shop? All of these activities have an environmental impact - the food was produced on land that was once rainforest, your home, the shop the roads were once rainforest and the food/drink is produced on land that was once rainforest. Don't be so smug. Trawling produces 1/4 of the worlds fish production. You would need to cut down the worlds rainforests 5 times for farms to replace the fish/protein.

The fishing industry is probably the most over regulated industry in the world.
Here in Scotland we are only allowed to go to sea 130 days per year. An average trip will last 8 days making 16 trips per year. Of those 16 trips 2 days will be spent steaming to and from the fishing grounds leaving 6 days fishing which is a total of 96 days a year. This means 269 days we dont catch or earn anything. Unlike other industries we dont receive a penny in subsidies either.

@hellerase Well, the fact is, and I would love to address congress on the issue, is that I once felt as you do, until I went Trawling in the Bering Sea on the Lone Star for 5 years. The grounds are clearly marked and plotted just like a farmers field. We have a device called a VMS that will snitch us off in an instant if we stray from the area. I never saw anything but black volcanic ash and a few boulders and a wide variety of edible fish come up in our trawl. Never, a sea lion or a porpoise!

also, if the government would have given these fishermen a warning on the moratorium even the year before, they could have organized a buy back of the licenses and the fishermen would have found something else to do, but when you slam this many people with unemployment, they aren't going to find jobs easily, schools will overflow with students and many people will go bankrupt from this horrid act, the government is to blame in this situation, not the fishermen.

of groundfish all the way back to the 80's, a good 7-10 years before the codfish moratorium in 1991, not thinking of the economic impact of suddenly stopping the fishery and leaving everyone fishing those licenses out of work, if the government would have been more strict with the laws, quotas and mesh sizes, the codfish would again be the most numerous fish in the atlantic, never blame the little guy who follows orders(fishermen), blame the boss(the government).

Yes I am certainly proud to be a fisherman. Do I have any control of catching small fish in my nets. No NOT AT ALL. The holes in the net can only be so big. God made it this way for a reason. Us humans die for a reason, and that reason is so the world doesnt over populate. Same thing for the ocean. If the ocean got to full of fish, the ocean would rise extremely. And second, it would get so full it would be like having 200 fish in your bathtub. Im sure you can figure it out from there.

Most commercial fishermen will lie to the gills to justify there jobs. You don't have to be a scientist to determine what they are doing. With modern fishing gear you can easily take more then the ocean can give. Greed is the driving force. I can spend thousands of dollars a season sport fishing, diving for lobsters and scallops and almost always come up short because the commercial folks are raping the ocean.

Unless you really know what takes place on the ocean floor or have been on a research or fishing vessel, your time advocating lies and deception are useless anywhere. Bottom fishing is done on soft, sandy sea beds, not coral. If we were to tow a $150,000 codend and net over a jagged, razor sharp bottom, such as coral, well...you do the math.

no, shrimp live up river most of the year. they ride the tides out to spawn. we catch them on soft muddy bottom, bottom in wich is ever changing because of the tides and strong tropical systems we get down here. the shrimp spawn and the cycle continues.
