I knew the vocalist about ten years ago. Johnny Lamb (2nd from right). He co-owned a pub I frequented at that time off the Strand. He sang the 'A'-side as well. Nice bloke.
Further to my comment below: the record eventually sold for £666.66 on eBay! For one 45 rpm single, amazing. Keep a look out for a good copy at your local car boot sale....
I just heard this record for the first time, as it is currently subject to intense bidding on eBay. It's currently up to £200! Never heard it in the 60s so it was probably never played on radio even at that time. I like it and can see whay it's got such a good press here. Steve Howe was a founder member of the Syndicats, I see - he went on to join Yes and Asia, of course. Great guitar sound, Joe Meek was a master producer.
it's weird. i prefer the horrors version because half way through this one i get annoyed with it. no offence, these people rule. it's just a matter of personal preference, and i like the differenc of the other version.
@TheHunty2010 I get annoyed with the Horrors because they go into the song too early and the singer and the whole band are confused and miss their cue.
i had never heard this before brian matthews sounds of the sixties last saturday, radio 1 eat your heart out! blew me away, cant stop playing it, freakout guitar or what ,im 52 and had never heard it before, shit
a bit good eh! never heard it befoe last saturdays brian matthews sounds of the sixties on radio 2, radio 1 eat your heart out, cant stop playing it ,guitar freakout supreme, the very idea that i have reached the age of 52 without hearing it pains me!
giving freakbeat airtime would not only be risky to radio, it would also put pressure on the listener to actually listen to the f***ing music and lyrics. with the odd exception, radio stations air nothing more than background shite, and if they dared to air a song such as this, they run the risk of the listeners demanding more....AND THAT IS NOT FINANCIALLY VIABLE. RADIO IS DEAD COS IT LACKS SOUL, GUTS AND THE VERY LIFEBLOOD OF A RADIO STATIONS VERY PURPOSE... IT LACKS GREAT MUSIC.
Couldn't agree more! It's amazing how many GREAT 60's songs never have seen the light of day on the radio. And the guitar work back then blows away anything seen today!
Been listening and loving this song for so long. If you guys like this you should download or even better BUY the nuggets collections. But since you found you'r way here, you proberbly know that already. :)
Just to remind everyone that 'Crawdaddy' is now available on a recently released CD compliation,'THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE!',an indication that the song is gaining in reputation.About time too!!
The Horrors version is mint and so is this, they wouldn't have wanted to cover it otherwise. Peeps should stop with the whole covers can't be better crap, they both have their own merits!
I love The Horrors version as well, it has a more modern energy to it and they have amazing stage presence. However this is timeless and has such a rich sound to it that makes it brilliant
This is classic, no need for Ritchie where Ray Fenwick is concerned, a guitar player that later dared suit Ian Gillan as well, a tastefull player in his own right.
The Horrors play the song wrong, they go to the chord change before "He always walks alone" and not straight after. It makes a big difference. Their's sounds fake.
Yeah, that's true. However, I still like it. I think it was a pretty good cover. But I decided I like the original better :D. Because it's the original. And no cover can ever be as good as the original, of course. I don't know what I was thinking.
The Early Reggae version of Alton beats the crap out of the original (seems to be 2 versions, i'm talking about the one on the other side of English talk, not the one that's on youtube atm).
A lot of Rocksteady & Early Reggae reggae covers soul/motown/southern soul songs. Some of them are actually better (but most of the time way different then the original).
Ahh I suppose that's true. But at the same time, isn't music arbitrary? Who decides if the cover or the original is better? I don't necessarily always prefer the original...however, the original has extra merits because those performers are the ones who created the original song, which really, is the part that requires the music creativity. And, to scribepoe, I would've listened to your arguments more if you hadn't said "Peeps". :)
one of my personal meek favourites, this tune was rated number one top uk freakbeat track of all time some years ago in record collector mag & how right there are.

All along the watchtower, a Bob Dylan song covered by Hendrix is better than the original.

i think they are both equal. they both have different feels to them. Dylan's is more country rock n' roll and hendrix's is more psyhcodelic
