whats the purpose of swinging the blocks? I steady the blocks with the deadline going down but never touch it when the blocks are coming up.. I find it pretty easy latching tubing.. 2 7/8's drill pipe and collars can be tricky sometimes on service rigs though, since we have no bale rams like dign rigs..

only go up once or twice a year to latch, can do it this fast or faster! No need to swing the elevators, just lengthin your lanyard and get your timing. Probably latched 4-5 hundred this year, don't remember a miss.....like riding a bike
You dont even have to pull the blocks or the deadline towards you to make the latch if you know how to do it properly. First of all your laniard is way too short and you are not leaning out enough. Thats all there is to it.

You "burn" the dead line on the blocks...you just have to know how to string the blocks up so the dead line is on the board side...always burn the dead line...just don't hold on too long...or f'in OUCH!

definitely got skill, but you're gonna lose a hand or fingers if you keeps it up you crazy bastard. topdrives are sweet, but our board is 17 fingers deep by 10 rows wide (340 triple joint stands of 5" pipe, not including collar fingers) of course it's worse than a free swinging block when the hydraulics go out during a trip, cuz u can't swing the block or even the bells. hopefully the driller will shut down to fix it or at least unhook the bells from the hydraulics.
good trick for latching tall joints i seen this clip and started doing that for tall ones and then i got caught and my company re ran my drill line on my rig so that the deadman line was in the back hahaha

This rig is old, but it's still one of the best rigs I've ever worked derricks on. The deadline is in the frontleft like a three-legged Franks, which makes for easy control of the blocks. Th derricks are 96 feet high and it's the best view in the world.
