is BBS sort of the same concept as usenet? I've heard of usenet for years, but never have i really done anything with it. also, I wonder how do groups work with different servers to get an account to access them with??? like alt.whatever for example, exists in a plane which whatever usenet service has...and has the same messages/downloads on it regardless of service provider right? how the hell does that work? do all the usp's relay the same groups or do groups have same names/different content?

i'd suggest ya do a little research most ISP's offer usenet access. but some don't . But to get the max benefit (depending on what your looking for) try a pay server that is totally dedicated to usenet such as Giganews.

I access newsgroups through my ISP and use Forte Agent as my newsreader btw :)

You have to pay for it because they are hosting all of those files on a bunch of harddrives so you can instantly download them. P2P is the distributed version of this and is highly prosecuted. giganews is protected under american law by common carrier status, as are most others.

Newsgroups have been around for ages, but if you think they are "secretive" and that the MPAA or RIAA or such agencies know nothing about them, you are mistaken. Although newsgroups are faster, they have nothing on p2p or torrent networks for content. They ARE difficult to search through, offer less stuff, and most of the time the stuff is incomplete.

Get involved in a private torrent community, you will hit your speed caps, and for free.

Heya I am a pirate and I am loyal but you cant tell me I am going to hit my caps with a Bittorrent, I show me a torrent program that will max my connection.. lol in fact I can only download as fast as the rest in the sworm but with programs like Usenext I can download at my full download rate and I am not talking about 100KB or 300Kb I am talking more on the lines of my full connection speed at 7mb.

I would just like to ask you people if you could explain to me how to set up and start using newsgroups. I don't really have a great understanding about all the technical stuff but i would love for one of you guys to just give me an idea of the best programs to use and what i have to buy to gain access. Have you ever set up an email account in one of those email programs before? Its kind of like that.

First you sign up for a news provider, they will give you these things,

A login name

A password

A server address.

For a start I suggest you purchase a block account at usenet-news(.)net

Then download a newsreader, a good one for beginners is grabit(get it from shemes(.)com)

Okay, lets stop here for a second, Do you have the following things...

A newsgroup account

Now open grabit, it may pop up with a window to configure your server, if it doesnt, under "subscribed newsgroups" right click on My Grabit and select add server.

Profile name:what this setup will be called in the list, it has no affect on actual downloading.

hostname" where you put the server address, my usenet provider(usenet-news) sent me an email with the address.

You can leave the port selection where it is(at 119)

Account name and password is where you enter yur account name and password :)

Your usenet provider should email these to you.

All the other setings you can just leave at the default for now.

To find things to download go to newzleech(.)com

Then in the search results check everything you want to download and click on the GET NZB button. Now open the nzb file with grabbit and it will start downloading.

Well, technically, torrents have better integrity checking than most usenet clients. It's just that usenet does some FEC via PAR2 files. In either case, neither of these systems will save you if the original file was corrupted to begin with. Then you'll just have to hope that the person who upped it has the foresight to add a decent amount of internal RAR parity.

I personally use Newsleecher (FTW !!) and Usenetserver (cheapest, with 110day retention, I know its not 200 days, but it also cost $14/month (when you pay in 3 month increments , its $17.95 if you pay in one month increments), not $30/month with giganews

Lol. Usenet sucks compared to P2P and torrents.......both of which have way more content available at any given time than newsgroups, and they're easier to search through without having to be some kind of usenet whiz.

And don't forget that in order to get good newsgroup access you have to pay for it......lol. As if i'd pay for file transfer access that P2P offers for free. :\
