  • They are acting like no one in africa has a computer...

  • One Laptop per Nigglet.

Such a waste of time and money, just give them a banana!

  • i'll blow up the whole planet

  • this is so cute. :'3

  • Maybe we should take care of our own people first, THEN we can guilt trip our prosperous society in to helping other countries. Just sayin'.

  • because children need laptops instead of proper food and shelter

  • @CaptainDishman That's what UNICEF is for.

  • i like the idea, but one laptop per child is a bit exaggerated imo. besides, i dont think they will use it for education as much as they would play games on it or watch porn or whatever, public computers/laptops at school would be a much better idea. even if these computers are cheap, i think the plan needs to be discussed more.

  • Shouldn't world hunger be solved before giving out one laptop to each child? I'm all for everyone having access to the internet, but I don't know if the priorities are straight.

  • it is education that will change this world.

  • I bet he gets shitty internet connection

  • Are schools don't even have 1 laptop per child, this is not gonna change anything over there either way.

  • @whiteriotalex OUR culture has an information overload. There is writing and knowledge everywhere, so we attach less significance to it. The famous scholars of the past, before the printing press was invented, had access to maybe a few books in their lifetime. They poured over them and extracted every bit of knowledge accessible. This is the same for people living in developing countries. They actually WANT to learn, but they can't. The spoiled culture arising in the West has access to

  • pretty much any knowledge they could want, because of the internet, but we just don't care to learn. This is why you see so many people from Southeast Asia in our Ivy League schools, becoming doctors and engineers. Those cultures have only developed to Western standards more recently, since the end of WWII, and so their eagerness for learning is still burning. Giving developing countries access to education will change things for them, but what we need is a change in mindset over here.

  • @dandydonner i live in a a developing country, india... your'e facts are'nt correct at all. we have a shitty education and social system and people are not interested in true learning and enjoyment they are all only interested in making money and buying a big house and big cars and improve their standard of living... we all think that knowledge is truly valued in the west as basic needs dont come before that...

  • @whiteriotalex Well our education needs repairing before we worry about others.

  • Man, I could see those laptops breaking and getting fucked up pretty easily in a place like that. Maybe we should focus on other things first..

  • In Venezuela, the government of Chavez has given a laptop to each kid in public schools, from pre-school to 6th grade, the responsability over said laptop is given to the child, nobody has to donate and no corporation benefits because it's made by the government run "VIT" and includes "Canaima" a Linux/GNU distribution, also developed by the state.

Chavez's ways are often criticized, but this is one of things that show the change that is undergoing in our country.

    A better world is possible.

  • @Gaashura Yeah, dictators are pretty cool. I don't get why everybody is picking on him.

  • How about a laptop that comes with a free water purifier?

  • watching porn has changed his world XD!!

  • internet porn has changed his world.

  • Now, quick, somebody send them a link to Khanacademy.

  • how do they recharge these things? wont the battery run out in a day?

  • @xiniks I beleive they can be recharged via crank.

  • @xiniks probs solar power, knowing how hot it is there :d

  • CONDOMS FOR THESE PARASITES!!

  • @megadarwin135

you're the shittier darwin, not the mega, should get that changed

  • Because they really need laptops more than they need food and shelter.

  • @MarioGoesSuper

as you can see these particular recipients seem to have the bare necessities, now they have access to a tool that can show them how to go above and beyond the bare necessities

  • Can you pls send me a used Cd rom? we got PIII computer at our school but we dont have a Cd rom.

Or send me $0.01 to my paypal account...

    shehani0nline@yahoo.com

  • What happened to little Zimi? A follow-up story would be nice

  • @pwgrant

You mean you've never gotten an email from any Nigerian kings telling you that you have inherited a fortune?

  • Okay for everyone sayin "oh you need to give them food and water, they don't even have electricity how would they even use a laptop" not all poor people are starving! not everyone in africa is living in the jungle, quit trying to undermine the efforts of these people donating the laptops, they are doing a great thing!

  • "Along with stopping exploiting these countries in terms of resources..." Yeah, that's the problem. Has nothing to do with their inherent instinct to swing from the trees and throw shit at each other, stopping only to fuck anything that moves.

But, yeah, "colonialism" is the real problem....

  • could it help them get food or water for free? hmmm? did you think of that???

  • Yes, that's the best thing to give a starving child without food, water, medicine, or even electricity: a laptop! Yeah, who cares if they're starving, as long as they have this nice new computer, which they CAN'T EVEN ACCESS THE INTERNET ON SINCE THEY HAVE NO INTERNET CONNECTION, OR EVEN ELECTRICITY FOR THAT MATTER.

  • @GoldenCenturion The video termed "OLPC Mission, Part 2: The XO Laptop, design for learning" should explain everything you seem to be mad about. These people are trying to do a great thing and you are undermining their efforts with these unnecessary ill-informed comments. Please educate yourself on what you talk about before you go off on it.

  • Boy We Got The Best Name :D

  • what linux is it can you download it to try for ourselves without buying laptop please its not that i am being mean i just cant afford one at the moment.

  • Are you kidding me...? A child who is suffering from malnourishment, is under horrible living conditions, and is suffering like this needs a LAPTOP??? OHH~~ but the laptop can sustain these environmental conditions~~!! *sarcasm* This...is pathetic, and angers me....

  • @luvhateme001 Shut up you fucking prick! Most of these kids come from a world where their only possessions are the clothes on their backs They don't take a gift like this for granted unlike most American children today. At least these kids will be happy to get a learning tool that their parents could never afford to get for them if it weren't for this amazing non-profit organization. Get real man...seriously

  • education is the key. Along with stopping exploiting these countries in terms of resources. Cool effort, go for it OLPC!

  • buy the new Indian 35$ laptop and throw away this 100$ trash

  • hahahah shameless whites never give up your stupid habit

  • 3rd world is a glimpse of our own future after Peak Oil.

Its interesting to see if laptops & IT generally are viable in post apocalypse environment.

  • Sweet!

I hope it makes a real difference :-)

  • Wow. I think that is really amazing. :]

  • Really are you kidding me? wtf is wrong with you. the last thing they need is a laptop. A hammer um...... seeds aids meds...... a laptop this is the salvation of Africa. I hate you all. Please buy American

  • @mikeysdevilish you son of a gun. buying american will only bolster your american capitalists. what good is the size of your french fries to a poor african kid?

did you know that WENDY doesn't exist in Africa. WELL DO YOU? Think about that next time you chop shop down those burgers with a cold coke. :(

  • @LuffyTubby but thats ok..... I want America to be great. It's not our responsibility to take care of Africa. Africa on a whole doesn't take care of it's self! All I was saying is if we are going to dump money there then buy them something that can help them help themselves. Like tools, you have to walk before you can run! and they have a hell of a lot of walking to do be for they need goddamn laptops.

  • @mikeysdevilish do you know where african americans come from? we pumped them dry as fuck for resources, minerals, resources, slaves and more. I swear to god, we owe a lot to Africa, but it's almost impossible to get back on its feet as they themselfs have become so fucked up over the last many generations, that a healthy dose of capitlism cant really fix em'

    shit is wack yo.

  • I don't like the commercial idea, of the child making claims about what the audience knows and doesn't know. It seems somewhat arrogant, even though the msgs is good, ofc.

  • @LuffyTubby hah yeah I thought that, I just thought hey is this kid patronising me already? "Hi I'm from a place in Africa. Don't bother asking where, you can't even pronounce it."

  • aww

  • I think this laptop is more durable than HP

  • Yes, let's give laptops to third world countries so that we can get more spam from people claiming to be Zulu princes with intersts in milluns of dollers so send bank info and you get 50%s. Gards, (dumbass 13 year old niglet whose starving to death.)

  • Thank you Zimi

  • Thank you, You have changed my world.

  • go fuck yourself. you don't even make sense.

  • My friend hopes to send some of these laptop to a certain are of Nicaragua. We're figuring some more things out before we ask for help from the group we went with down there earlier this year. My goal is to start a library. We're working together not to change the culture, but to give them access to more of it. =]

  • Why would someone call it a curse continent?? Please people, where are your hearts. You just should be greatful for every single thing that you´ve got. You have many more opportunities than other countries, good on you, MAKE THE MOST OF IT!

  • who ever u may be..listen....just because you are fortunate to be in another continent does not mean you are better than any human....it is very inconsiderate of you to refer to a whole continent as "curse continent".....you should thank God gor your situation.......all u care for is yourself.....man watch it..........

  • Imagine what could be accomplished if anyone in the world could communicate to anyone else in the world at any time, efficiently and without censorship. Imagine how much easier this scenario would be to achieve if everyone in the world had unfettered access to the internet.

With the distribution of the XO, that dream becomes more real.

  • -> scale network, the communication of information works best when the entire world is connected. Giving these children a chance to connect to the world is one of the best things that can be done for them, because *by this means* they can then be helped by people around the globe, not just by governments who have billions of dollars to spend on resources and services.

To those who don't understand what global communication is, let me say it clearly:

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT LOOKING AT WIKIPEDIA!

  • In terms of the project's approach, I think that a easy-to-use telecommunication device (which is basically the XO) is one of the best kinds of foreign aid. e.g. Food aid can actually hurt local economies and adapt communities to depending on freely-given foreign sustenance rather than working together with *each other* to provide for their physical needs.

Communication, however, is global. Quite opposite to physical commodities, where communities and economies often function best on a small ->

  • Zimi, I'm sorry to hear what these people had you recite. 8...(

OLPC, if you want us to give to your project, trying to make us feel bad by using a poor South African child as a parrot for your typical "you-horrible-people-don't-care-about-these-poor-starving-children" type propaganda is one of the worst ways to motivate us. This ad would actually be much better than the ignorant "from a continent you'd rather forget" line.

  • tenkyou !! u havee chaaaaeeenged ma wold

    LMAO

  • This is 1995clockworkkid, just on another accounts, and I agree with all of your points fully. But, the only way that this will work, is if the people have children, and pass on knowledge (demographics say this isn't a lot), have land for farming, and the supplies needed to grow food, find materials to heal wounds, ect. This is a good idea if these principals are possible. Now, there are a lot of organizations that give food too, but still this is just my opinion, but the laptops are smart.

  • Comment removed

  • Thats really awesome! I am actually gonna tell my friends about this. Its true that developing countries often need to worry about food and water before trivial things, but i think the laptop is a great idea.

  • yea but most teachers and parents there are dumb and they don't know how to distill water so they get worms+diseases and die, the laptop will help the children learn distillation+hydroponic farming/etc

  • yes, but, there minds should be developed and have land.

  • clockworkkid, maybe thats because you have never had to figure out where to get food or get medical help because in developed countries like ours, most people have never been without

  • Yes, and I agree with your point fully.

  • Won't they use the computers to look at porn eventually? I mean, puberty will hit.

  • @Shamalong680

    Its better than committing rape.

OLPC is a great idea and will probably bring hope to developing countries. Knowledge is power, after all.

  • a book can cost 100

this laptop cost 100 but have unlimited information in it via internet ,it is a life saver for the poor and thrist for kwodlege

  • @chinaliew it will also be a magnet for porn.

  • @chinaliew To 4chan!

  • this video is so high quality

  • now we can chat to africa children

  • Angleboot, do some research before you comment on something you have no clue about. OLPC has taken that into mind when they developed the XO, it can be powered by a hand crank and the laptop was designed to operate in environments just as Zimi's.

  • This Foundation has very good intentions, but really, wouldn't it be better to supply the children with food, clean water, schools, vaccines and decent roof over their heads?

This laptops surely would be more useful being in the hands of local teachers.

Again, the intention is very noble, but to me the priorities are not set right.

  • There are many organisations trying to help the people with food. The problem: When food is so cheap in these countries, in which organisation delivered food, the local farmers lose their job.

So many organisations tryed to help this way, but OLPC now trys another way!

We will see wheather it will work...

  • uhm its for you 2 buy it not the poor people.

poor people have to worry about the food and shelter. its just a small luxury we take for granted to these kids

  • This is not critisism, it is an honest question. For 1, most of the 3rd world country people can not read or speak english. They already don't have the skills to use the computer so who is going to teach them? For 2 I would rather spend $200 on giving them good clean food and resources than games on a laptop and a webcam. They have no use for it. Answer me back please.

  • Your concerns are understood and to a point they make sense. However, a child's mind is like a sponge and will soak in anything and everything. Haven't you noticed how parents look at their young kids in disbelief at their knowledge of the Internet and the PC? Who taught them? By giving these underpriviliged kids such an item, you do in fact open a world to them which they would never otherwise achieve. $200 worth of food is great but won't last very long. This XO PC is a chance of a lifetime.

  • it wont feed them. won't heal their wounds. So Im gonna speak honestly in my opinion here, but, If I was a child like them, well anyone actually, I wouldn't be thinking to myself...."Oh ya, holy, this has internet explorer, so now I can go on wikipedia, and google, and look up how to grow food, and heal my wounds.".

  • but by any chance, this kids will pass down the knowledge to their kids, one day, their life will change...eventhough there's a chance it may not be, but 1 laptop equals to 1 chance, if everyone is doing it, they will have chanceS to change their future.

  • i remember something someone once told me "give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life". i think this applies.

  • uhm...ya, thats true, but the part of that they didn't say was...the man needs some fish to survive at first!!! and how did you even see my comment, I commented like one year ago. And no, my point was, when you live in a third world country, needing resources i.e. water is more important than letting kids go on wikipedia, for crying out loud. Like, am I missing something here?

  • Yes, you're missing somthing. What you're saying is like if you're a kid living in the projects in the US, you should have no ambition to go to college because you'd address your immediate needs quicker by becoming a drugdealer.

  • Okay, (this is 1995clockworkkid, I can prove it), you need to stop right there. I come from a well educated community, I don't do drugs, and I know you need to survive with food. The only way that this theory can work, is if the people have children when they grow older (judging by the demographics, not very likely), but if they do, they have can pass it to the children. And, this could be a good theory, but that being said, food is survival, not immediate material items.

  • You misunderstood me. I was using the ghetto kid story as an example. My point is, you can't feed ppl forever. You wanna help them, then help them helping themselves, give them access to means to help themselves, like a book or a laptop.

  • A new generation of geeks.

    So long Asians.

  • Don't forget the OLPC deployments in Aghanistan, India, Thailand, Cambodia, and Oceania!

  • @OLPCFoundation the Philippines? have you given some to them?

  • @OLPCFoundation before you give out laptops, think about food, water, medicine, and textbooks.

A child cant learn if he is starving or sick.

  • @vivlevivle are you a troll or just really stupid?

  • @radiofreak56 i see that you have no argument against my case, all you can do is insult me, wow geniuse

  • Can these computers display porn? As a 12 year old, that would be the first thing I would learn about.

  • I don't like the idea of this, it seems way too overblown. I understand the education and all is important, but It seems fishy, just the laptop idea seems odd to me. What happens if a laptop stops working or breaks? Do they get a new one? Also, the video seems a little subliminal, I'm just offering creative criticism, I'm not trying to put down any efforts, There's probably tons of companies already giving them food, shelter, clean water. I guess.

  • All the best wishes with this,

    ~Marcus:)

  • Thank you, Marcus!

  • a country we can't pronounce? thats kinda condescending...i don't like this commercial they didnt do a good job with making the commercial. a better alternative woulda been start with kids looking dejected and then another shot of kids with laptops really happy. and say a guy come out and help these kids learn. i would buy one for them

  • Yea sure maybe, they edited a couple of stuff and change thing around but the messgae is still there.

My family is from the same continent that she from, not the same country. But still I love what unicef is doing.. Why does it always have to be the rich kids who get the education? There are other kids out there who can make difference to, for their own country. The country that the rich kids have forgotten.

So maybe instead of complaning about their adverstiment, U should give a kid a laptop

  • There are many more important things than a laptop that would help their future....most kids here in the US don't have a laptop, and they're doing just fine.... I'd rather not have buyers here adding more debt to their credit card bills to buy these things, resulting in a default on their loan, which I have to bail out..

Also, I guess you haven't heard about the violence the black market for the OLPCs has caused in Africa?

  • I'm not saying everyone should give a laptop if you can't afford it then don't.

When you metion the children in the Us who don't have a laptop and are doing find Yes that rue but then agian what else do they have....

    Schools that give them education,

a Library with a free computer

now what see what these kids have compare to them:

schools that give education base off of the money they have (which isn't much)

    no Library

hmm.. Maybe it because America is a whealtheir naton???!!

  • Dear sir, I am in possession of 1 million dollars from a prince I know who is in the hospital. However, I need you to send me 1,000 OLPCs so that I can wire you the monies.

  • pavanb; Your comment proves you don't know a thing about the program. There are numerous factors considered by OLPC to discourage blackmarket sales and abuse:

    - each XO laptop is serial-registered and remotely desactivated when reported as compromised.

    - XOs are explicitly designed for kids. If you've ever handled one IRL, you'd know no adult would go unnoticed using one.

    - OLPC deployments are wide-scale with local support from entire communities up to the local school level

    - and so on

  • :)

thank you! Finally, someone who actually knows what their talking about.

  • propaganda

  • perhaps you should enlighten us mandock6

  • Wow, this is neat. Where is this girl from?

  • I think it's a male?

  • It is a girl, from South Africa.

  • But she says "a country that you can not pronounce".... Its quite easy to pronounce South Africa.

  • dude shut up

Africa is a continent not a country. Its probably some country with a name like Zekduflashnakouai, if thats a real place.

  • YOUR WRONG "SOUTH" AFRICA IS A COUNTRY! moron

  • There is no such country on Earth.Try the Moon.

That country is mine and is called Rwanda(Like in the movie hotel Rwanda)

  • Try this one:Rwanda.

  • @pavanb500 come down this not dont make me smack u shes a young kid stop getting ideas
