Dancing that way, she really had no option but to put it there. Unfortunately, the tabloids had a field day. Sad, considering she was actually in pretty good shape during this if you really look. This was really ridiculed back in 1991...now, 19 years later I actually think it's a good performance. The costume is EXTREMELY unflattering on TV but probably looked better in person. She should have worn all black like her dancers did when they took their suits off. Her 1960s heavy eye make up made her face look plumper than it actually was. She should have lip-synched more because the times when she's singing and dancing she's out of synch with her dancers.

She was dealing with the lip-syching allegations so she felt the needs to sing live. A lot of articles I read following this performance said that this is a HARD song to sing live mainly because of all the synthesizers and stuff. Still a great performance. If she would've performed it like she did on her tour it would've been better

I really don't get the flak she got from this. It's actually a good performance. Sure, the vocals may be "underwhelming" in places but Paula did pull it off. Yes, the dancing is heavy, she definitely should have toned it down a bit... but I loved it. I really hope she'll return to making music, because her first 2 albums are really good, the last one not so much, but "My Love is For Real" still remains her best song... I think.

As I remember, after seeing this performance when I was a kid- this was the beginning of the end for Paula. However, I think she was great in the 80's/90's as a performer, entertainer, etc. I don't think she gets enough credit for her live performances as far as the entertainment factor goes. Not the greatest singer but she kept it exciting.

Very resourceful to use megaphones to replicate the vocorder effect in a live performance. I always feel bad for singers that sing live in songs with heavy choreography or awkward melodies because the vocals always take a hit. Then people go 'omg he/she sucks' when it really isn't their fault.

I think it's great that she sang live...how many of today's pop stars can do that? Not many. Vocally, it's similar to any other artist that performs live...the studio version (especially nowadays) is so touched up by producers it's hard to reproduce live.

@Toney511 I agree 100%. I remember this performance; it was right after someone attempted to accuse her of supposedly being another Milli Vanilli, and she didn't *dare* lipsynch. She wanted to prove to everyone that she was a genuine performer, and she knocked herself out to give a strong performance. She did use far too much choreography to be able to breathe/sing properly, so she was really out of breath, but I admire her very much for attempting it anyway and love her for it. ;)
Paula's got talent and that's not lie. She did this live because people were bashing her for lip synching (Milli Vanilli). The reason the performance went bad was because she was dancing to hard to keep her voice intact. You wanna see Vibeology at it's best, watch her perform on her tour. This was the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards. I recall Kurt Loder saying it was the mic pack on her back that made what she wore unflattering to her natural figure. I also think she should have danced less, because that is some major breathing for both singing and dancing. In addition, and this is no way trying to diss her, but her vocals are not as strong as those who can dance and sing at the same time.

As a former dancer/choreographer I love Paula and her contribution to the art I have watched her and the people she's worked with over the years as a teen when this came out I appreciated it for what it was and do remember hating the outfit but as I watch this now I think this is so bad.
There are only two bad things on this performance. The outfit, and she singing alive, well i mean screaming alive. All the rest is cute, and awesome, the mean idea, the dancers, the coreography, everything, just she, her fat, short, big pancetta and nothing of butts body is the disastre.
here's some more insight for those who don't know. this happened after accusations of lipsynching, which followed Milli Vanilli. So Paula had no choice but to prove that she could sing live AND perform high NRG dance moves.

Very resourceful to use megaphones to replicate the vocorder effect in a live performance. I always feel bad for singers that sing live in songs with heavy choreography or awkward melodies because the vocals always take a hit. Then people go 'omg he/she sucks' when it really isn't their fault.

I think it's great that she sang live...how many of today's pop stars can do that? Not many. Vocally, it's similar to any other artist that performs live...the studio version (especially nowadays) is so touched up by producers it's hard to reproduce live.

@Toney511 I agree 100%. I remember this performance; it was right after someone attempted to accuse her of supposedly being another Milli Vanilli, and she didn't *dare* lipsynch. She wanted to prove to everyone that she was a genuine performer, and she knocked herself out to give a strong performance. She did use far too much choreography to be able to breathe/sing properly, so she was really out of breath, but I admire her very much for attempting it anyway and love her for it. ;)

Paula's got talent and that's not lie. She did this live because people were bashing her for lip synching (Milli Vanilli). The reason the performance went bad was because she was dancing to hard to keep her voice intact. You wanna see Vibeology at it's best, watch her perform on her tour. She's even joked about the performance on Arsenio at one point. As for her judging on A.I., she knows how it feels to have people judge/bash your voice so she can understand them better then Randy and Simon can

She did well, she never half steps. she could have lip sync but then why? I always loved this performance and this song. She the greatest when it comes to this siging and dancing thing. I'm a 100% JANET FAN but Paula is crazy at this stuff. Janet is #2. Appreciate the entire performance not just look at the singing. A+ for effort on vocals. Also she's less than 5ft and the female dancers are like 6ft. they make her look out of place but this shit ROCKS

This was the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards. I recall Kurt Loder saying it was the mic pack on her back that made what she wore unflattering to her natural figure. I also think she should have danced less, because that is some major breathing for both singing and dancing. In addition, and this is no way trying to diss her, but her vocals are not as strong as those who can dance and sing at the same time.

As a former dancer/choreographer I love Paula and her contribution to the art I have watched her and the people she's worked with over the years as a teen when this came out I appreciated it for what it was and do remember hating the outfit but as I watch this now I think this is so bad.

There are only two bad things on this performance. The outfit, and she singing alive, well i mean screaming alive. All the rest is cute, and awesome, the mean idea, the dancers, the coreography, everything, just she, her fat, short, big pancetta and nothing of butts body is the disastre.

here's some more insight for those who don't know. this happened after accusations of lipsynching, which followed Milli Vanilli. So Paula had no choice but to prove that she could sing live AND perform high NRG dance moves.
this was bad, but she did it, can't say she didn't pull it off. on top of that she had to wear that horrid outfit. I think she did a hell of a job depsite everything working against her. ilu paula. :D

The very next morning after this performance at the 1991 MTV VMA'S, every radio station & morning news programs across the country was talking about how horrible that costume was & how bad she looked in it. She was the butt of many national jokes for weeks after. Much like she is now on 'Idol'. I guess its funny how some things dont change. Paula Abdul always has been & always will be a baffoon.
