Sad to go to Jai Alai fronton in Miami and it is a lot of video betting,.. don't need to go there to bet. I think they have other betting going on there, as well.. People need to go there to keep it alive!! I would, but I now live in California!
I lived in Miami between 1977 (born) and 1989, when this series was made. My dad was actually a production engineer for the show, so I often visited the set and hung around Don Johnson. I actually remember being there during part of filming for this episode at the Miami Jai Alai center.
I don't really know, but I think it's one of those sports where people play it for the actual love of the sport instead of the money..unlike most sports nowadays.
@MondoBeno Funny, my mom was the payroll bookkeeper for years in Miami and I never thought to ask her what they made...she's gone now, so I can't ever ask her. Good question, tho! There were seasons where they were in Spain, and other locations.. not sure how that all worked.
I always went to Bridgeport and Milford, Connecticut Jai Alai's. I knew all of the players at both frontons. This is a real treat. Thank you so very much for posting this.

You can get a great workout with this sport, but it looks dangerous...I played it in elementary with a wiffle ball

When they catch the ball, how long are they allowed to hold it for? What are the scoops called and what are they made of?
eamonnca1 3 years ago
They are only allowed to return the ball (pelota) immediately. can't hold it at all. the "scoop" is called a cesta

Scoops are called sestas, don't know what they are made of
Pilkie101 2 years ago
The catch and throw is got to be in a smooth solid motion. The"scoop" in Basque language is called bote pronto.
It is a shame that jai-alai is a dying game except in Miami.
