I love the guard bashers... The national guard C130 unit in Bagram has the higest FMC rate of any airframe in the whole country, including the other active duty 130 units. I love our avtive air force, but there is something for you to chew on.
This is an ANG tanker that belonged to the Mississippi Air Guard at its 5 year depot maintenance. It has no tail stripe because it has just been painted. Civilian contractors blew this aircraft up. This aircraft 57-1418 was assigned to 186 ARW MS ANG
look at the tail of the aircraft. No tail stripe. If this was at an ANG unit there would be a tail stripe. How do I know? Well that stripe is appart of my job. On top of it if you listen, Steven Hawkings said a DEPOT MAINTAINER.
And to the idiot down there putting down the Guard. Go to Red Flag and climb up into an AD jet. Then go climb up into a Guard jet. Then tell me who doesn't take care of their planes.
My unit just got a few Gaurd jets. They look great inside but the maint that was done is CRAP!!!! Wrong parts installed, cracks all over, and a bunch of over due TCTO'S.
Ah, this reminds me of tech school. Now all I need is the C-17 mishap at Charleston and the stroll down memory lane is complete. Yay ignoring tech data!
This is a response to BrynMawrYamBag. You need to get your facts straight. Yes this tanker belonged to the 186 ARW Mississippi Air National Guard, but the fact is Depot Maintainers destroyed this jet, not the Air Guard. I am a crew chief in that unit and have crewed that very airplane. And I would put our unit up against any unit in the whole U.S.A.F. We have proven we can maintain tankers as good or better than the rest!!! Politicians cost us our tankers, not our abilities to maintain!!!
This video and thread are full of mistruths, misunderstandings, and false hoods. Ground man suffered back injuries, the crew inside aircraft had the eardrums ruptured. The pressure relief vavles were not capped, they were installed BACKWARDS! The entire maintenace on this aircraft was called into question. Oaklahoma base, Tinker AFB Depot level maintenace.
It wouldn't surprise me if you're right. I have always have been suspicious of the wording "no REPORTED injuries". The wording seems to suggest that there were possible unreported injuries. Putting the valve in backwards would in effect be blocking the venting air. I preferred your wording, however it should also include the knowledge that that in effect blocks the air.
I'm curious as to what you mean by "backwards." You see, I work as an Electro/Environmental Specialist on the 135 and have been doing so for the past 8 years (which means that I work on this same pressurazation system) I currently possess 7-level/Red X certification in 2A6x6, and before that I worked as a civilian for 6 years performing depot level maintenance on the 135 at ANOTHER facility (not Tinker.) Your description of "backwards" seems very unlikely, if not impossible. Please explain.
After I read my earlier post I see that it seems somewhat rude. Not my intentions, but I am curious Herk, as to how the valves were installed backwards. You see, simply installing it 180 deg out will place it UPSIDE-DOWN. That's the only way it could be backwards but now the fittings are outside of the aircraft. If it was rightside-up, the sensing lines wouldn't come close to lining up (making the error extremely obvious.) That's all. Thanks ATFS for pointing out the tone of my earlier post.
Capped for check part of the tech data; NOT backwards; if not capped, pressure check FAILS.
Engine, is "short cut", against tech data; "air cart" is to be used.
Two guys in cockpit, they felt AIR rush by, failure in the back. Why back injury, they looked fine. No ear problems, going up is free, coming down is not. Ear problems?; would be in pain as the pressure rose, not as it leaves.
Someone in B-52 accident, same time doing maintenance/pressure work, that is the back injury.
Ok the Tennessee guard killed the oldest active C-141 through stupidity, Mississippi destroyed this tanker...Now I know why so many guard units lost their aircraft under BRAC 2005.
So you know about the "E" model 135's having engine strut problems? Is that what you're talking about? You DO know that the "tanker shuffle" was the result of the "E" being phased out. I bet that you're some kinda active duty kid who thinks that the Guard is full of idiots. I have 12 years experience working both depot-level maintenance (not at Tinker) and Guard maintenance on the 135's.
Trust me, if active duty had maintainers with an average of 10 years experience (and yes, guard guys work the jets 40 hours a week) their jets would fly right. What does active duty do to a guy with 10 years experience? He's actually taken off the flight line WELL before he gets 10 years in. But what do I know, I've only had to fix active duty jets on TDY's cause the young active E-4's and E-5's hardly knew their systems.
This airplane belonged to the 186 ARW and BrynMawYamBag you need to get your facts straight. MS Air National Guard did not destroy this airplane, Depot maintainers did!!!!!
understood. But the pressure relief valves are secondary valves that relieve excess pressure to avoid this type of situation. maybe these were the ones that were capped off? And then the outflow valves, which are normally powered by AC voltage was left closed.?
135R outflow valves do not operate on AC voltage. The entire 135R pressurazation system is independent of electricity once the air has entered the cabin. Refer to 1C-135(K)R-2-3GA-1
The valves are capped for the pressure check. Engines to supply the pressure not in the tech data; suppose to be an air cart; engine was shortcut! Cause-officers saved money and got promoted, reduced tech library on the job. Cause - Warning, make the best workers supervisors, not your friends. Warning, when you reduce the tech data locally on the job as a major, it will bite you as a General; u reap what u have sown. Making it harder to get to tech libraries has an effect on the job!
That guys ears can't be in normal condition after this. I freaking hate being inside when they to pressureization checks. Seeing this scares the hell out of me.

What aboout the Pressure relief valves which are supposed to protect against overpressure?

The outflow valves which are used to regulate the pressure of the aircraft were capped off during a 5 year overhaul and never opened back up.
