Damn those birds scream loud, even in open plains the cameramicrophone can´t handle it if they are closer then let´s say 70-100meters or even further away....imagine that inside a house?
I'm brazilian and currently there're 12000 in Nature, still a very number close to original population. These birds are difficuilt to breed in captivity though.
At flowdrip. 102 Hyacinth Macaws and 1300 macaws in all. Is he a billionaire. I really cannot comment on the ethics of his operation till i see his ranch in person or at least the photographs, but what really matters in the end is the population in the wild and it is less than 3000 birds. If he is dedicated to creating a reserve captive population for species insurance, it is my opinion that he should stick to just one species and not sell the young ones as pets. Please post a link to his ranch.
Good that your friend is breeding macaws. However it would be nice if he were to help supply the brazilian gvt. with some babies for relase to their natural habitat. The only place these endangered speces are safe is in captivity and conservation.
There are currently only 1000-2000 left in the world, so this is quite a find!
Where did you get that 1000-2000 figure from??? I have a friend here in California that has 102 Hyacinth macaws himself, and counting. He has over 1300 macaws in total on his 850 acre ranch. I consider these birds wild as none of them have ever been caged. He just supplies food, water and open aviaries outside so they can come and go as they please. Ever heard 1300 macaws screaming together? My God is it LOUD! :)
You consider your friends pet birds "In the wild"... In the wild means, in thier native habitat...un owned. Not in California. on somones property, flying free or not. In the WILD, thier NATIVE HOME, Hyacinths are extremely endangered. One reason Hyacinths cost $11,000 and up.
I bet you my friend's macaws have a longer life span then any of the birds down in the Amazon. They don't have to search for food, don't have to worry about all of the diseases and poisons that naturally habitat the rain forest. Since the rain forests are constantly being raped, I think my friend is doing a damn fine job in preserving these awesome birds.
You can't preserve ANYTHING that you have absolutely no control over. Sure he could buy the country of Brazil, then do what he pleases with it, but that is an absurdity. I suppose every person on earth should be sent to his native habitat. Would that make us any better off? No. He lets them breed naturally, fly free w/o human intrusion. Think of it this way: He provides a free restaurant and hotel to any bird that wants it. How could anyone find a problem with that?
They should seriously ban buying them from the wild (they probably already are, its called the black market). I would never buy one that is not captivity bred.
I want one so badly! The flight of the hyacinths! :)

If your friend was doing such a good job, he would be preserving their habitat not exporting them to his hobby farm.

I think they would be happier in their homeland. Where their ancestors are, where their families are, where they were born to be.

Current estimates put the number in the wild at more like 6,500, and they're doing quite well in many areas.

That's wonderful news!
They are amazing birds to see in freedom.
What really strikes me with these is how loud they are in flocks(deafening)
