I wonder if Edi Ranier had a knife. Did he think about cutting the rope that was killing him, and how his friends would fall if he did, and decide not to? Did he die knowing he was making a decision to try and save others?
I'm confused I thought Hintertoisser got knocked off 1st by an avalance then the other 3 had their accident seperately later on? But it makes it seem like it all happened at once here? If so why did they only explain about Willy and Edie differing deaths? They don't seem to bother explaining what happened to H'toisser so it looks almost like he dragged them with him even though he just went off by himself!
If he'd dragged them off, he'd be at the end of the rope.
It's pretty clear from the description that he was swept away by the avalanche, but was not connected to the others - which is why he ended up at the foot of the mountain, 2000-odd feet below them. What explanation do you need? His being swept 2 kilometers down a mountain by an avalanche not enough for ya?.

It just talked about the other 3 so if you are watching it for the first time and don't know whats going to happen it's easy to miss that he was untied from the others. Having seen it again I noticed. But when you read about it it's explains it a bit differently which is why I wanted to check it out
@mark24897741 Taking heroin is a risk but I doubt very much that it's worth it. There is something both very impressive and very tragically stupid about people that climb mountains and willingly put themselves in these situations. It's like getting lung cancer, beating it and then continuing to smoke.
@arbeghast You cant compare heroin to mountain climbing. Theyre not alike in any way. Heroin makes you an burnt out, drug addicted fool, while Mountaineering makes you stronger, invigorates you, and gives you an appreciation for nature. Sure it's dangerous, but its also extraordinarily beautiful. Theres nothing more humbling than staring up at a massive cliff face thousands of feet high. You feel so small, but after you make it to the top, yo feel like you can do anything.
i suppose it's a very specific taste. Some people are drawn to these places no matter what the risk or danger or memories of past pain. Joe is one of these people.
How pitiful. I can't imagine the helplessness of everyone involved.
