Speaking of the Rock Hall of fame, not only The Cars not in, what about Chicago, Boston, Bad Company, Kansas, The Doobie Brothers, Heart, Hall & Oates and many others not in, but The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Joan Jett, The Beastie Boys, The Pretenders, Run DMC & Blondie are.....PATHETIC!!!!
@kealiiable They were definitely original with their own sound. Very few bands actually carve out a niche that they own so completely as the Cars did. I agree...timeless.
@davidlm6974 I am not gay and I think he is hot. I guess people can feel that way when they are comfortable with their own sexuality. It is called a man crush. Ever heard of it?
@balzysalzy To admit that another man is good looking is one thing, but to say he's fucking hot is a tad gay. It's ok that your gay, there's not anything wrong with that.
I never realized how genius Ric's lyrics are, not to mention how perfect the songs sound live...Ben was sooo underrated as a rock vocalist, but my kids love the songs...top of their lungs in the car..timeless!!!
Before MTV there was Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. My friends always got pissed at me because I would always make sure to be home to watch this show. IDC I have so many memories.
The Police started playing the US in Boston at the same time. My GF's dad used to drink pitchers with Sting at The Channel. He saw Aerosmith in the Gym of my high school.
God Bless you Benjamin Orr such a great voice and talent we should have found a cure for cancer by now so many minds so much intelligence i know we can
@Nesmith98 It's to their credit that they are not in that phony hall of fame. That institution is the opposite of Rock and Roll. They tried to induct the sex pistols. Lydon responded with a hand-written note: "that hall of fame is a piss stain" and "your still music industry people. Were not coming." I would hope the cars would do a similar thing if they were "inducted".
I saw these guys in a club outside Boston in late 77? 78? They were just comin on the scene. Ben Orr, the bass player and lead vocal was awesome. I saw them again in 81 on leave, wow, they got big! Huge! Great band. But IMO, when Ben died, so did the band. But the great music is epic and will live forever! Rockn Roll!
This is a long shot, but does anyone know where I can get a mic stands like they're using? Van Halen used them in the 80s as well...can't find anything online. Thanks!
It's interesting to here this Candy-O song sort of through a Panorama filter. There are some vocal "affectations" that Orr used on the Panorama album only and here they are in this clip.
This is gorgeous. It reminds me of my friend every-time. I didn't know the lead singer, Ben, wasn't here. RIP. Man, I was born at a shitty time lol. Worthless music is all I get lol.
Ben Orr is easily one of the most under-appreciated rock stars ever IMO. His talent dwarfed many who craved the spotlight. Ben just played and sang... extremely well. That was just his gig and his job. RIP Ben.
Thank you benny11letters for posting this video. I'd forgotten how good the Cars were live. Saw them recently on The Colbert Report, but it's not the same. Makes me sadder about Benjamin Orr's passing. Thanks again!
Learned a little something today watching these Cars youtube videos. All my favorites were by Benjamin Orr. I had no idea. Has a similar experience a few years ago with Colin Moulding from XTC. In the days before videos it was easier to get these guys mixed up. Now that I've seen this I can't believe I didn't realize it wasn't Rick Ocasik before.
@FarmChica said: "he kinda looks like a pro wrestler, here. It's as if everybody came out of the seventies realizing that they all took the ugly pill" Really? So looking at some idiots underwear while he tries to hold up his stupid over sized pants is WAY better looking. And lets not forget Lady Gaga. She's hot, NOT!!!! LOL
My band covers this song, as well as several other Cars songs and people always love it. I always loved Benjamin Orr's singing and of course Elliot Easton on guitar is amazing, as is the whole band. RIP Ben.
Never cared for Cars much in the 80's. Realized 5 or 6 years age that every time one of their songs came on the radio I would crank it up. Went out and bought all the cd's. Few singers could sound as good or better live as they did in the studio. Ben Orr is one of 'em. Gone too soon.R.I.P.
This show and "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" would come on late at night on the weekend in the 70's before MTV and was better than MTV. Its a shame there are no shows like this now. The best bands were on these shows. They had different kinds of music. Something for everybody.
really love this version!! can't say enough about the program "Midnight Special" they had all the top bands!! very exciting to watch way back in 1973! Cannot believe that was 38 years ago!!!! Still rockin at 54!!!
I was 7 at this time & remember it like it was yesterday. Great times, waiting to see your favorite band on these types of shows. Now everything is so easy that kids tire of bands after 1 month.
@tonlo92 Perfectly said my friend. Lucky to be able to listen back now to such great music now known as classics of which we lived through at the inception. Funk, punk or junk good music lasts more than a lifetime.
