But electricity comes from coal no?
Answer :
The power source may be coming from coal powered plants but it uses the power far more efficently than a combustible engine and therefore pollutes FAR less than ICE motors.
Secondly, it has the ability to be powered from renewable non polluting energy sources like wind,solar.hydro,ect..
Electric cars are the future and nothing will stop it
@jmlew just get a darn diesel car they give you about 30% more fuel mileage and the fuel cost is only about 10% higher vs regular fuel. The repair bills on electric or hybrid cars is rediculous. only engineers can work on them.
give it to stig !! XD ..i would love to have this car! i hope soon will every car manufacture have electric model so prices would drop rapidly down. if you drive a SUV and you are not a forest worker you are a terrorist ! :P
The cost of producing the electric motor and battery can cost as much or more that the entire standard gasoline-powered version. Therefore the retail cost must be higher.
@ELTCARautomotive Cost will eventually drop down as electric cars become more popular and mass produce and for sure technology will improve as demands increase. This isn't new technology we have it for at least past 50 years. When gas cost its $10 per gallon even 18 wheelers become electric. I wish to that day!
Why would popular cars cause prices to drop? Why would mass produced cars causes prices to drop? Isn't it already mass produced? Have the prices of cars ever drop or are they getting more expensive?
It is said that electric cars cost so much because of battery technology. You'd figure 4 rechargeable lithium batteries are for sale at $21.00. Thats $5.00 a cell. The Nissan Leaf may be carrying about $9,000 dollars worth of batteries. Electronic technology (circuit boards etc) may costs around $6,000. Electric motor may cost around $3,200. Chassis and Body panel production may cost $5,000. Interior materials may cost $5,000. Total to be $32,500 before possible "income tax" credits.
@ELTCARautomotive yes, they are new and slowly getting up to mass production. Why does a corvette cost so much more and only carry 2 people. Low volume production costs, I predict in time EV's will cost less, do more, last longer and make you money with V2G-101.com !
@2008calender I hate to inform you but I'm American, and not everybody I see is obese. Yes it is true that we are starting to have a problem with that, but it is slowly being fixed. Also, we don't all drive muscle cars and SUV's. I see plenty of Hybrids going through town and other small cars. Yes it is true, a lot of us drive SUV's as well. But realistically Muscle cars are too expensive.
maybe it is,nt the best choice when you,re going to have only one car,but if your wife already has a petrol car,it,s perfect as a second car for any home. im considering to buy it to make the way from home to work , 25 miles.
Won't buy getting one of these until I can actually BUY the thing. I don't lease my cars. I buy them. Nice concept. I like it. But... I'll have to wait until I can buy it. Screw leases...
The LEAF will cost about $9 to travel 300 miles for many of us. How much does it cost to fill your tank after 300 miles? If you average 25 mpg, at $3/gallon it would be $36. And not many of us average 25 mpg in our vehicles. Plus no oil changes, filter changes, or transmission fluid. Service costs are greatly reduced. Don't just look at purchase cost, look at ownership cost. LEAF is a great value. To find out more about the LEAF, please check out livingleaf.info
ooookay I saw this footage when nissan released it... it had quiet audio from the actual environment... which I thought was cool because it showed off how quiet the leaf was... sQe8LJSKH8I
This may be the first successful electric car to be sold in the US. After looking in the Nissan website and comparing the technical specs, price, and practicality, it would be my first choice, if I was in the market niche. My only suggestion would be either a supplemental emergency battery pack or to have the entire battery easily removed and replaced with a spare.... or maybe keep an eu1000 honda generator in the trunk, LOL
when electrics cars starts to take over the street, the gas will drop dramatically and you will be able to full your tank with just five dollars >:/ so the owners of gas cars gonna get really happy ;P
The Pentagon just release that $1 trillion dollars worth of lithium was discovered in Afghanistan recently. Now I'm no conspiracy theorist, but that seems like a nice little profit. Controlling Afghanistan, like we've been trying to do for nine years, might make us the controllers of next gen power similar to the Saudis with oil. So is "green" energy and global warming about the environment or money and power?
why would anyone spend 25 grand on a car that only last up to 100 miles? i don't get it! and here in fla you run the a/c then your lucky to get 50 miles out of it, how useless is that, just get a golf cart its cheaper!
It will be nice to get the federal rebate upfront. I hope other manufactures follow and make it a little more affortable for people to buy. Nice to have as a commuter car and stop depending on oil.
There is no info on the Batteries they may drive the car for 100 miles the first week you buy it but after a short time that distance will drop, just like all rechargeble stuff, laptops phones ipods ect' so how long do they last and how much do they cost to replace?
As in almost all instances, if you have additional questions about the vehicles shown in our videos, you should visit The Auto Channel website for the answers.
there are loads of electric cars coming out but price is the key and from what i have read etc the leaf is the most affordable one where you can get a family in it and be comfortable.
Yes, you're right on that, but for 20? Here's the problem with 20, a new 2010 ford is MSRP: $25,170 - $37,770, gets only 18 mpg avg. !!! That's a damn Taurus! They should change that name though...anyway... With escalades, and lexus' and all the other's over 40 these days... 50 is not a stretch....If i were to own one, I wouldn't want to see every tom, dick and harry have one too. Give us some long range fast El. Cars....some at 20 and some at 50k.... I just like the Tesla and it's name.
If you're not happy now Marcus, you will in a year. Bitch at the dealer and return it...be a persistant ass... Drive a beater lincoln, save your money and buy a Tesla Model S in 2012. That's what I'd do. Well happy motoring.
has anyone ever noticed that the driver seat of the nissan leaf is on the right hand side when your -average north american car has a left sided drivers seat lol!
Tell this to - GM CEO who earn 19 millions this year. And GM has been rescued by the USA government, billed out using billions of dollars (taxpayers money).
this car is so ugly, can't car designer's make better looking cars, if they are able to get ideas from concept cars why not use them on actual ones. Also what about people that would like to get one of these vehicles and live in an apartment without parking, many are just off street parking, how would the vehicle be charged. I think they should put a solar panel on the roof of the car, that would save on charge time.
You're absolutely right. PEOPLE have to drive stupid looking bookworm cars, just to say I'm electric. If you want a real ALL American Electric Car, look no further...it's the Tesla Model S. I sure hope they have the ramp up to sales as this car. Tesla is It. Nicoli Tesla...the man who revolutionized ac current!
@JUKIO01 It wont have the same cord, you can see both plug ins.. The small one is for home.. It takes 4-8 hours for a home charge to 100%. Quick charge will put it at 80% in about 30 minutes.
This should be for SALE instead of a lease deal for two reasons, 1: so the manufacturer can't pull them all off the market like they did with the EV1 and 2: so an aftermarket can flourish. Give people the opportunity and they will experiment with innovative ideas to extend the power and range and it will be like what happened in the 50's when kids started designing hot rods out of T buckets. That's when things like high lift cams, porting and polishing, blowers and tuned exhaust were perfected.
SpitfireOFatj... agree 100%. It's no wonder we are stuck with gas powered cars. My bet is that if we could get mass produced electric on the road, within 24 months we'd have some huge improvements over the factory offerings.
We're seeing so many new major shifts in technology. Back in the late 1800's there was the introduction of the internal combustion engine. Now were witnessing history in the making of the new introduction of the mass produced electric car.
Hey GT... there were electric cars in the early years of auto building. around 1832 Robert Anderson of Scotland put together the first electric "carriage". Google early electric cars. It's amazing reading.
RENAULT AND NISSAN ALIANCE have made a contract with company BETTER PLACE and they will have on their all cars SWICH BATTERY mechanism so you can switch in 1 minute !!! Loook for Betterplace videos !!!
This car will be great for my 12 mile daily commute, but won't work for roadtrips. We have 2 cars now, we'll have 2 later - 1 electric, 1 diesel/oil burner. Electric cars won't work for everyone, that's OK - even getting 30% of the petroleum burners off the road would be outstanding. Now, how do we get some of the excellent Japan and Euro diesel cars, trucks and SUV's in the USA?
The Leaf will be 1 of my 2 cars also II have a Camry I will use for my occasional out of town trips but the Leaf will fulfill most of my metro area driving needs which is 85% of my driving.
It's not so much about where the electricity comes from at this point. We now are starting to have fully electric cars which gives us at least the chance of charging our cars with cleanly generated electricity. Before electric cars, we didn't have that choice.
i wold buy one of this cars, BUT and here is the major down side there are no charging stations in my country and most likely there wont be any to soon.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i can see the future, people will be towed waay more often, back to their homes or to a charging station, great new business for tow truck operators! Or mobile charging trucks will visit you for quick recharges costing $75 or so
There are many energy sources out there that, if developed as enthusiastically as the internal combustion engine/petrol, would be both more efficient and more economical than what we have today.
I believe that If all the auto manufacturers pursued electric motor/battery technology as vigorously as their current push on gas engines, we'd have 600mile-per-charge EV's in a decade or two.
That cos your future involves sitting on your hands today.
Gasoline is at a dead end, peak oil has already occurred, the future is either electric or hydrogen. Expect the innovators in Asia or Europe to solve the dead battery issue in the next.
The US should stick to what its good at - building weapons, leave civilian engineering to the rest.
xdir you make point i listen to it slam. i not want to sit on hands you sound smart so much in this post i think. i stop all sitting on hands. you so smart
Should we congratulate the US for going against conventional wisdom of the past 20 years in building gas guzzlers? European & Japanese pushed the limits of fuel economy and the US was infatuated with SUV's & Hummers.
Your greed for oil is also the what Bin Laden uses for justifying his murders.
Would America have invaded Iraq but for oil? The weapons might protect but the shackles of oil require the need to protect its supply-breeding hate, why not invest in energy independence instead?
You can pretend that your country and every other western/industrialized nation isn't completely oil dependant if you wish. Why must you insist on demonizing the U.S.? All of us are at fault for the situation we are currently in. The extremists you mention will gladly kill you and yours as mine. They hate regardless your nationality. To compare the E.U. experience with the U.S with such broad strokes is unfair and ignores too many factors of history and politics. We are making improvements.
Industrial nations all need oil but the US consumes 25% of the daily global production, the vast majority of which goes into cars, if the US had pushed for EU fuel economy 20 years ago it would now be using a lot less oil, the US will average 35MPG in 2020 a target EU hit in 2007.
I paint in broad strokes because of people like John McCain whose solution to high oil prices was "drill baby drill" or those who believe the world is ending in our life times thus we dont need long term solutions.
Please don't assume we think like McCain and as you may have noticed we did not elect him. He is from the past and we do not wish to go down that road again. E.U. fuel milage standards are higher because it seems that your politicians have taxed the crap out of the public forever to pay for social programs. Tiny cars are therefore the norm . We are headed in that same direction as well and it's not all bad. Americans in general are ready for change and it is already apparent.
@yellowbusguy you know what if we had McCain we would be sooooo much better off. Social programs and insane taxation hurts the consumer, and ultimately the economy you uneducated, liberal fool. Its idiots like you that are the reason society is regressing go get a real job
trust me people.. in a couple more years.. we will all know the truth that GM's volt 40 miles per charge was a joke all along.. Nissans's 100 miles per charge is already a big jump, not to mention Tesla's new sedan that is coming out late next year with a 250 mile range per charge, it's just the truth
Chevrolet had the EV-1 in the mid-90's that could have achieved 300 miles per charge, had Chevy not bought the patent for new battery technology and sold it to Shell Oil Company...
I think they sold it to Texaco. And then after their obligatory leases were all up they collected every car, and turned them literally into bite-sized shards. No recycling, no reusing useful parts, not even cost-cutting resale.
Something was going on behind the curtains with that one.
the same thing happened in 1964 when Chrysler was testing the turbine engined car... it got about 30 MPG but for optimized performance you had to use Kerosene...
That is the absolute truth. The Volt is a sham. A rediculous attempt to trickle out technology to a public that will be complacent with marginal improvements in efficiency.
Truthfully you can only trust a Japanese (or at least Asian) company to give you truly cutting edge products since they have less economic dependency on oil corporations and more on technology itself.
I like it a lot. The only thing i would change is that little indention on the front bumper where the chrome strip is. It looks like a fish mouth. Make the whole bumper smooth and it would look great
Im not too thrilled with the renting of the battery however. It appears many cars based on expensive lithium batteries cant cut the cost of those batteries enough to sell the darn car and end up leasing the battery so the car doesnt cost an arm and a leg up front. Too bad Chevron is apparently choking development of NiMH that is still powering Rav4EV from the late 90s. The Rav4EV NiMH batteries did the job.
Its not that nice but, still is the best I´ve seen and if there want appear another one better, thats the one I'll bye. One thing is for shore my next car will be in nature thinking
This is a great city/town car! Why waste expensive gas to drive around town and for short commutes. Makes no sense when you can use electric for that. No more wasteful idling at traffic lights drive thrus and traffic jams. Ill hold onto my gas Camry for longer trips but dont think i'll be using it for most of my driving.
the volt is a way better car , when the battery is low it has a on board gererator to charge the battery , i will buy the volt, plus the volt is a bigger car alot nicer
compared to its concept version, the volt looks like shit. but why accept a mediocre 40 miles per charge and still have to use gas for the damn thing? i liked the gm ev1, 160 miles per charge before it was killed by gm.
The Volt is a cool car but it only gets 40 miles per charge then the gas comes on. I want to be able to do all my days driving with zero gas used and a 100 mile all electric range is more than enough for that. I'll just use my gas Camry for longer trips. Most people have 2 cars anyway.

There ARE 2 charging CONNECTION plugs.
16 hours charging at 110 volts or 8 hours at 220 volts. Require 30 ampere fuse line for 110 volts or 15 ampere fuse line for 220 volts.
For the special charging require 30 MINUTES.
But this one require special CHARGING connections, that needs to be installed by dealers at at your home.

JUKIO01 2 years ago
@JUKIO01 It wont have the same cord, you can see both plug ins.. The small one is for home.. It takes 4-8 hours for a home charge to 100%. Quick charge will put it at 80% in about 30 minutes.
dhahn01 1 year ago
This should be for SALE instead of a lease deal for two reasons, 1: so the manufacturer can't pull them all off the market like they did with the EV1 and 2: so an aftermarket can flourish. Give people the opportunity and they will experiment with innovative ideas to extend the power and range and it will be like what happened in the 50's when kids started designing hot rods out of T buckets. That's when things like high lift cams, porting and polishing, blowers and tuned exhaust were perfected.
SpitfireOFatj 2 years ago 11
SpitfireOFatj... agree 100%. It's no wonder we are stuck with gas powered cars. My bet is that if we could get mass produced electric on the road, within 24 months we'd have some huge improvements over the factory offerings.

We're seeing so many new major shifts in technology. Back in the late 1800's there was the introduction of the internal combustion engine. Now were witnessing history in the making of the new introduction of the mass produced electric car.
GTnumber1 2 years ago
Electric cars were around back then and there were more of them than internal combustion powered cars.
jalit 2 years ago 2
Hey GT... there were electric cars in the early years of auto building. around 1832 Robert Anderson of Scotland put together the first electric "carriage". Google early electric cars. It's amazing reading.
smartcarfor2 2 years ago
I wonder if you we would have to pay a fee at the charging station everytime to charge the batteries.

Now, how do we get some of the excellent Japan and Euro diesel cars, trucks and SUV's in the USA?

how do you think we make the electricity to power this 'economical' car
ricebag 2 years ago
Hydroelectricity
stumann500 2 years ago
It's not so much about where the electricity comes from at this point. We now are starting to have fully electric cars which gives us at least the chance of charging our cars with cleanly generated electricity. Before electric cars, we didn't have that choice.

permanentbliss 2 years ago
Glad I don't have money on your predictions.
There are many energy sources out there that, if developed as enthusiastically as the internal combustion engine/petrol, would be both more efficient and more economical than what we have today.
I believe that If all the auto manufacturers pursued electric motor/battery technology as vigorously as their current push on gas engines, we'd have 600mile-per-charge EV's in a decade or two.
mpalm887 2 years ago 2
That cos your future involves sitting on your hands today.
Gasoline is at a dead end, peak oil has already occurred, the future is either electric or hydrogen. Expect the innovators in Asia or Europe to solve the dead battery issue in the next.
The US should stick to what its good at - building weapons, leave civilian engineering to the rest.
xdir 2 years ago
xdir you make point i listen to it slam. i not want to sit on hands you sound smart so much in this post i think. i stop all sitting on hands. you so smart
samskov 2 years ago
Why be an ass and ridicule the United States? Our weapons are the reason you can sit there in your home and make idiotic comments.
yellowbusguy 2 years ago
Should we congratulate the US for going against conventional wisdom of the past 20 years in building gas guzzlers? European & Japanese pushed the limits of fuel economy and the US was infatuated with SUV's & Hummers.
Your greed for oil is also the what Bin Laden uses for justifying his murders.
Would America have invaded Iraq but for oil? The weapons might protect but the shackles of oil require the need to protect its supply-breeding hate, why not invest in energy independence instead?
xdir 2 years ago
You can pretend that your country and every other western/industrialized nation isn't completely oil dependant if you wish. Why must you insist on demonizing the U.S.? All of us are at fault for the situation we are currently in. The extremists you mention will gladly kill you and yours as mine. They hate regardless your nationality. To compare the E.U. experience with the U.S with such broad strokes is unfair and ignores too many factors of history and politics. We are making improvements.
yellowbusguy 2 years ago
Industrial nations all need oil but the US consumes 25% of the daily global production, the vast majority of which goes into cars, if the US had pushed for EU fuel economy 20 years ago it would now be using a lot less oil, the US will average 35MPG in 2020 a target EU hit in 2007.
I paint in broad strokes because of people like John McCain whose solution to high oil prices was "drill baby drill" or those who believe the world is ending in our life times thus we dont need long term solutions.
xdir 2 years ago 3
Please don't assume we think like McCain and as you may have noticed we did not elect him. He is from the past and we do not wish to go down that road again. E.U. fuel milage standards are higher because it seems that your politicians have taxed the crap out of the public forever to pay for social programs. Tiny cars are therefore the norm . We are headed in that same direction as well and it's not all bad. Americans in general are ready for change and it is already apparent.
yellowbusguy 2 years ago 3
Its about time, the US really needs to embrace the new technology and use its motor industry heritage to re-establish itself in auto innovation.
xdir 2 years ago 2
@yellowbusguy you know what if we had McCain we would be sooooo much better off. Social programs and insane taxation hurts the consumer, and ultimately the economy you uneducated, liberal fool. Its idiots like you that are the reason society is regressing go get a real job

trust me people.. in a couple more years.. we will all know the truth that GM's volt 40 miles per charge was a joke all along.. Nissans's 100 miles per charge is already a big jump, not to mention Tesla's new sedan that is coming out late next year with a 250 mile range per charge, it's just the truth
ELMER832007 2 years ago
Chevrolet had the EV-1 in the mid-90's that could have achieved 300 miles per charge, had Chevy not bought the patent for new battery technology and sold it to Shell Oil Company...
MassiveLemon 2 years ago
I think they sold it to Texaco. And then after their obligatory leases were all up they collected every car, and turned them literally into bite-sized shards. No recycling, no reusing useful parts, not even cost-cutting resale.
Something was going on behind the curtains with that one.

mpalm887 2 years ago 4
the same thing happened in 1964 when Chrysler was testing the turbine engined car... it got about 30 MPG but for optimized performance you had to use Kerosene...
not too economical
terry1919 2 years ago
That is the absolute truth. The Volt is a sham. A rediculous attempt to trickle out technology to a public that will be complacent with marginal improvements in efficiency.
Truthfully you can only trust a Japanese (or at least Asian) company to give you truly cutting edge products since they have less economic dependency on oil corporations and more on technology itself.
mpalm887 2 years ago 2
I like it a lot. The only thing i would change is that little indention on the front bumper where the chrome strip is. It looks like a fish mouth. Make the whole bumper smooth and it would look great
ducatinova 2 years ago
It is a little fishy. Maybe they will change that before the car goes into mass production.
deadmantyping2 2 years ago
Great step in the right direction.

This is a great city/town car! Why waste expensive gas to drive around town and for short commutes. Makes no sense when you can use electric for that. No more wasteful idling at traffic lights drive thrus and traffic jams. Ill hold onto my gas Camry for longer trips but dont think i'll be using it for most of my driving.
deadmantyping2 2 years ago
this is WAY better than that shitty volt
joker0187 2 years ago 2
the volt is a way better car , when the battery is low it has a on board gererator to charge the battery , i will buy the volt, plus the volt is a bigger car alot nicer
mail0123 2 years ago
compared to its concept version, the volt looks like shit. but why accept a mediocre 40 miles per charge and still have to use gas for the damn thing? i liked the gm ev1, 160 miles per charge before it was killed by gm.
joker0187 2 years ago 4
The Volt is a cool car but it only gets 40 miles per charge then the gas comes on. I want to be able to do all my days driving with zero gas used and a 100 mile all electric range is more than enough for that. I'll just use my gas Camry for longer trips. Most people have 2 cars anyway.
