If you don't like the intro simply skip through it? It's not like youtube forces you to watch everything you buffer.
Personally I would put Titus The Fox at number 1. I loved that game. All points bulletin was pretty good as well. Apparently Elite is the best even though I cant get my copy of it to work. I think Elite was voted as one of the most influential games of all time and the first of its kind in the sandbox genre. Awesome video though even though I cant relate to all of these games.
@ukmarkh If you do then my personal preference is to hear commentary and see game action. I don't like to read and watch the game at once. Its just not as good. I like the soundtrack, and the countdown graphics are quite good, apart from that they are too sectioned if you know what I mean. Also, how about music from the games in there too? The intro is just too long. I've already done the time travel bit by typing in youtube.com XD Good video though mate
hmmm man I think you missed the coolest games.... plus it's a turnoff you didnt capture the original game music.... my top10 in no particular order La Abadia Del Crimen Freddy Hardest Gryzor Prohibition Yie Ar Kung Fu saboteur Barbarian Knight Lore / Head Over Heels Renegade Combat School
I Never Forgot that. I am Very Love and remember CPC464, CPC664, CPC6128. I buy Amstrad CPC464 at 1985 Nov!!!!! 24YRS!!!!!! since. I use Emulator Amstrad on PC now. Much thank you video youtube. I am very happy.
Mark,.. you have brought back wonderful mmemories for my 71 year old father and I,.... what a wondeful tribute to, what I believe, was the most technically adept 8 bit home computer of its time,.. yes the C64 sold more, and had for more global recognition,.. but the Amstrad CPC,.. 6128 for me,.. was by far and way the better machine. The C64 may have had a vastly superior sound chip,... but the CPC's ggraphics chip had far more success handling parallex scrolling and displaying more colours etc.
If someone makes a Movie about old Retro Games, then you expect to listen to the original 8bit Music and not some random Pop/HioHop Music. Thats just one example of the things that are wrong about this.
What i can see that is good, is the Content and the Text commentary. But since you added some random music, it destroyed the retro feeling.
@ukmarkh Nah I think he's got a fair point, stick to the subject, post videos with useable quality and lose the sucky music and pointless intros, people want to hear the games too, seeing as you're using ads to make money out of this junk.
How about the Top 10 (or top 5, if 10 is too many) games that are ONLY available on the CPC 464? That would be interesting.... I'm sure the classic "Animal, Mineral, Vegatable" would be way up there *ahem* ;-)
Operation Wolf and Ikari Warriors got honourable mentions at the end... great games for sure. Bob Winner was pants, graphics over substance. Airborne Ranger (I think your talking about) average at best.
well done !!! excellent work ... i agree with the most of your choices. However there is a negative point in your video. You should upload it on ''high quality''
I think you forgot another games: Oh, mummy Ikari warriors (probably the best) Game Over Arkanoid Fernando Martin Basket Match Day II Army Moves Navy Moves (I think the best ever) Manic Miner Green Beret Infiltrator La abadia del crimen etc
video is cool ive got a 464 that works spot on with a box full of games ,but still opt to use caprice on my pc lol..but im supprised none of the dizzy collection were in your top ten i alwys enjoyed run the gauntlet and i preffered knight lore to head over heels .but thats just my opinion...
I'll agree with you it's a good game on the CPC... but it's a blatant Speccy port and doesn't take any of the CPC's strengths into consideration. Play the C64 version and you'll see why it didn't make the top ten, plus control system isn't as accurate when jumping across ledges as on the C64, and no music.
great memories -forgot about head of heals - great game but frustrating as hell - about the only game I never completed.
cant believe gauntlet didn't make it in though - just about best game of this era for pure playability. Pirates as well was fantastic and bought the re-release for my PC about a year ago.
Chase HQ and commando really good too. suppose this list has more of a platform theme - always into fighting game personally (renegade, barbarian, IK+, etc_ but each to his own. Cheers!
Comes down to personal choice in the end, and what games people hold fondest... no one list of peoples favourite games is ever likely to be the same. Pirates made it into my honourable mentions list at the end, as do all the games you've mentioned. Target Renegade for me is slightly better than the original, Barbarian, chasehq and IK+ are also amongst my favourite, but thank you all the same for some real constructive criticism
On the whole... the feedback i've got has been positive, the scroller doesn't give me a headache and the intro as far as i'm concerned sets the scene nicely.
In the UK the CPC wasn't that big on sales, so CPC owners all grew up seeing only a fraction of the games that were out. I don't know anyone that played the games you mentioned when we were kids... only later once emulation came about.
Really? I bought over 500 games for my CPC464 between 1987 and 1993 and they included all of the ones shown here. Maybe I was lucky I dunno but the best place to shop in West Yorkshire (UK) was Leeds. Also I only knew of maybe one other person at my school with an Amstrad, so there wasn't anyone to swap copies with either.
The CPC464 was the best 8bit machine in my eyes, although the Spectrum 48K (my other computer) and the C64 were very good. All had their good and bad points.
I was quite lucky, my cousin had the Amstrad CPC 6128 so we got to play on each others systems... games where I lived were like rocking horse shit for the CPC, if you had a Speccy or C64 you were spoiled for choice, but not so if you owned a CPC. I think the 8-bit machines were all as good as one another, each with their own classic games.
I have to agree with Ego, I never had any difficulty in tracking down games for my 6128. I must have had near 400 myself. A great era in gaming. The best thing is my next door neighbour had a Speccy and my other friend had a C64 so we got to experience all three machines. I've replayed a few of them on an emulator and I can't believe how difficult they are.
Maybe in Spain, but the language barrier alienated the game from all other Europeans inc us Brits. An English version should have been produced, as it stands it's not a finished product outside of Spain and therefore should never appear in a top ten.
Nah, I'll just play the Speccy version instead. It's in English! If I lived in Spain then yes, I'd probably learn the lingo, but not to solely play a game, no matter how good. Especially when it's available on other systems in English, and just as good. Adios!
I had problems with Thanatos, yes its a very good game... but it's also a blatent Speccy port and those don't sit well with me. Still, it might make it into a CPC top 100 games.
Dont think I could make a better video than this. I would only add Lazer Squad, and mention Deliverance, Shinobi. I dont think game developers had to pay Amstrad to make games.
I own Rick Dangerous 2 and it's a good way to kill ten minutes and all, but it's WAY too much like studying for a test if you want to be any good at it. You need to memorise that there are spikes here, a hidden enemy there, arbitrary death in the next spot.
Then I'm crazy... A speccy classic yes, but the CPC version should have been a lot better. Despite the half hearted conversion, it's a very good game and one that took me a while to complete. As for 'Top Ten' nah!
I was more shocked at the lack of Sqweek (Tho' it was less well known than it deserved to be, t'was awesome), but more than that... Elite! Considering it's classed as one of the best (and largest) games ever made, I'd have figured it at least deserved an honourable mention. Colour me shocked!
I really liked Sqweek, amazing the amount of colour and graphics on show, but like you said it wasn't that well known and in the end a bit too samey. As for Elite, play the BBC Micro version, and then the CPC port... the CPC version is severly cut down, and everything moves slowly compared to the original.
The idea is good, but I can't help thinking the footage you recorded for some games was a bit bland. Like in Prince of Persia, moping around at the floor trying to pick up the sword was not very thrilling or Rick Dangerous failing to kill that enemy with 5 bombs ... you should have shown more different bits (like very short sections of 10 seconds duration of the various stages etc.), would have made it much better to look at.
Simply ran out of time... never would of finished it otherwise. Think of it as a nostalgic look back... nothing more, that took me several hours. I agree, the vids are really lame and the more I think about it... there is too much slowdown on the games themselves.
My favourites - ATV Simulator, Commando, Cybernoid 2, Dizzy, Magicland Dizzy, Fast Food, Robocop, Daley Thompson Supertest,Flimbo's Quest, 1st Division Manager, Lemmings, Doors Of Doom, Hunchback 1 & 2, Masters of the Universe, New Zealand Story, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants, Xenon and Blood Valley.
ATV was OK, a bit average at best but ultimately a fun two player game. As for Commando, well this was much better on the Speccy and C64, the CPC version was good, but the slowdown and crap graphics prevented it from classic status. Fast Food? Really, the version I played on the CPC was pants. Flimbo's Quest didn't even scroll on the CPC, gameplay was rubbish when compared to the classic Commodore version. Are you sure about this 'Masters of the Universe' seriously are you pulling my pisser?
i was a kid when i used to play those games its more to do with the memories and plus unlike you i've never played the versions on the other formats... I dunno why I liked M.O.T.U tbh the version i had came in a multipack and never ad the map or instructions so i never knew what to actually do so thas why i liked it cause i would play it to try and figure it out ... have you ever played indiana jones on the Amstrad? that game was good but i could never get pass the train on the second level.
The C64 Sid chip was the best without question, but the AY Sound chip in the CPC had some fantastic 8-bit music and was also used in the Spectrum + and later in the Gameboy and Atari ST.
Depends on the type of game, the Amstrad could match and in most cases outgun the C64... there are many examples. Side scrolling games were nearly always smoother on the C64 though. The SID chip is better, only a fool would argue otherwise, but far superior I'm not so sure, check out One Man and his mic's podcasts and you'll hear some pretty amazing stuff from the AY. By the way, the CPC featured hardware scrolling, but no hardware for the sprites.
God all mighty... My Dad had an Amstrad and I remember him bringing it home from work over the Summer holidays and setting it up in my room. I can't remember most of the games but there are some. There was the Dizzy series. Porche Challenge, Switchblade and Nomad. My favourites were probably games from the Dizzy Series but I really liked a game based on a television series. I think it was "Famous Five". The whole game was based on text and entering directions and commands. I'm feeling nostalgic.
In my heart the CPC is more about prehistoric games like Boulderdash, Barbarian, Ping Pong, Strangeloop, JSW/Manic Miner, Pyjamarama etc. The games you put are to my eyes games of 16/32bits period with Amiga/Atari ST
Mind you, it's a bit of a shame that 90% of the Prince of Persia clip is spent bunny-hoping around trying to pick up the sword. Makes it look a bit like Madman of Persia. ;)
amazing video dude.... you've really put together an outstanding presentation with this one... how do you do it ? each vid u do gets better and this one is awesome... :)
i wouldnt have lemmings, stuntcar, head over heels - they are good games but they wouldt make my top 10 but thats just my opinion...
its so hard to choose just 10 top cpc games anyway as you aleready know
It's a good game for sure, but no top tenner dude! Amstrad Action certainly didn't think so, but if someone were to do a top 50, i'm sure it'd probably make it in.
Thanks for the video post! Brought back some fond memories thats for sure. Its a shame whoever made the movie didnt include Advanced Tactical Fighter in their top 10 - it was deffinately my favorite Amstrad game of all time and still amazing fun to play to this day!

@CLEMENT62153 totally agree....IK+ , almost all the games there are late 1989+ with stupidly colourful Mode 0 graphix.
Exolon or any of the games by that company, ranarama, uridium, zynaps.
I always liked finders keepers too :D
And I totally agree to not have the music of the games being reviewed is damn retarded...robocop I thought was ok but the intro music was excellent.
I think from what youve mostly chosen you didnt have a 464 from when they were first on the market.

What no SABOTEUR? NOT EVEN AN HONOURABLE MENTION YOU MUST ME CRAZY.
ramm0505 3 years ago
Then I'm crazy... A speccy classic yes, but the CPC version should have been a lot better. Despite the half hearted conversion, it's a very good game and one that took me a while to complete. As for 'Top Ten' nah!

I was more shocked at the lack of Sqweek (Tho' it was less well known than it deserved to be, t'was awesome), but more than that... Elite! Considering it's classed as one of the best (and largest) games ever made, I'd have figured it at least deserved an honourable mention. Colour me shocked!
lorddavid3dxw 3 years ago
I really liked Sqweek, amazing the amount of colour and graphics on show, but like you said it wasn't that well known and in the end a bit too samey. As for Elite, play the BBC Micro version, and then the CPC port... the CPC version is severly cut down, and everything moves slowly compared to the original.
ukmarkh 3 years ago
Fair point, perhaps there should be a top ten unknown Amstrad games, highlighting the best games Amstrad had, but never got the praise they deserved.
Fair point about Elite tho', I only ever got to play the Amstrad version (Which I loved, even if I sucked at docking)
lorddavid3dxw 3 years ago
The idea is good, but I can't help thinking the footage you recorded for some games was a bit bland. Like in Prince of Persia, moping around at the floor trying to pick up the sword was not very thrilling or Rick Dangerous failing to kill that enemy with 5 bombs ... you should have shown more different bits (like very short sections of 10 seconds duration of the various stages etc.), would have made it much better to look at.

Simply ran out of time... never would of finished it otherwise. Think of it as a nostalgic look back... nothing more, that took me several hours. I agree, the vids are really lame and the more I think about it... there is too much slowdown on the games themselves.
ukmarkh 3 years ago
My favourites - ATV Simulator, Commando, Cybernoid 2, Dizzy, Magicland Dizzy, Fast Food, Robocop, Daley Thompson Supertest,Flimbo's Quest, 1st Division Manager, Lemmings, Doors Of Doom, Hunchback 1 & 2, Masters of the Universe, New Zealand Story, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants, Xenon and Blood Valley.
binln 3 years ago

Even I disagree about the 5 firsts ones, I have you made a nice video.
for me, the greatest CPC game ever is probably Batman-the Movie.
But I miss too robocop, Crafton & xunk, Mask 1, and Platoon.

your videos are cool, but the intro's are too long

The amstrad seemed to have more colourful graphics than the C64, although not as good sound.
retronostalgic 3 years ago
The C64 Sid chip was the best without question, but the AY Sound chip in the CPC had some fantastic 8-bit music and was also used in the Spectrum + and later in the Gameboy and Atari ST.
ukmarkh 3 years ago
Better graphics, yes.. but MUCH slower (No sprites, hardware scrolling)
The SID chip is far superior to the AY.
Ahle2 3 years ago
Depends on the type of game, the Amstrad could match and in most cases outgun the C64... there are many examples. Side scrolling games were nearly always smoother on the C64 though. The SID chip is better, only a fool would argue otherwise, but far superior I'm not so sure, check out One Man and his mic's podcasts and you'll hear some pretty amazing stuff from the AY. By the way, the CPC featured hardware scrolling, but no hardware for the sprites.

Amstrad + terminator music = 5 stars. Amazing. On a side note, i feel so old now...

old? nono, im 23 and ive always liked chip and mod music, even tho i never actually got to experience the start of the golden 80' decade!

I think Renegade is worthy of a place in the top ten instead of Target Renegade, but good list nonetheless.

You made a really nice job here!
In my heart the CPC is more about prehistoric games like Boulderdash, Barbarian, Ping Pong, Strangeloop, JSW/Manic Miner, Pyjamarama etc. The games you put are to my eyes games of 16/32bits period with Amiga/Atari ST
step1970 4 years ago
doing really well until the number one slot! HOH is bloody great, but there are better, deeper more immersive Amstrad games out there.
but nicely done mate, viva la CPC !

ahh head over heels. you know i found an appletted emu of the speccy version and no, i still cant bloody finish the thing. damn it. one day! oh yes!
i can't help but notice a distinct lack of laser squad from all of these top 10's. oh well not to everyones taste i spose. great vid tho.

Great vid!
Mind you, it's a bit of a shame that 90% of the Prince of Persia clip is spent bunny-hoping around trying to pick up the sword. Makes it look a bit like Madman of Persia. ;)

I thought it was funny at the time... so i left it in. lol

thx for uploading. Althought i'm speccy user, sometimes i'like watching videos from amstrad to see the differences between versions.
btw, the music is cool, Chemical bros rulez!!

amazing video dude.... you've really put together an outstanding presentation with this one... how do you do it ? each vid u do gets better and this one is awesome... :)
i wouldnt have lemmings, stuntcar, head over heels - they are good games but they wouldt make my top 10 but thats just my opinion...
its so hard to choose just 10 top cpc games anyway as you aleready know
cpc4eva 4 years ago
It's a good game for sure, but no top tenner dude! Amstrad Action certainly didn't think so, but if someone were to do a top 50, i'm sure it'd probably make it in.
ukmarkh 4 years ago
Thanks for the video post! Brought back some fond memories thats for sure. Its a shame whoever made the movie didnt include Advanced Tactical Fighter in their top 10 - it was deffinately my favorite Amstrad game of all time and still amazing fun to play to this day!
