  • Beyond cool!

  • Great job man. That's ironic that you play a Aria Sb 1000. Les told me he played an Aria Sb 3000 in the video.

  • amazing job.

  • Used to play bass though I quit a long time ago. But it's songs like "Love Plus One" with such catchy basslines that make me want to pick a bass up again just to play it myself! Nice video though, you captured the same bass sound spot on!

  • Cool video. I actually linked to you from my blog as a way to highlight just how cool this bass line is.

  • Thank you all for the awesome comments!

  • Nice bass, what kind is it?

  • @Scarface066 - Aria SB1000...read the description! ;+)

  • superb rendition...very well performed sir.always enjoy your performances of top tunes.

  • Kicks Ass! That is very good.

  • Back again superb playin man how about doin love has got me in triangles off the same album that would be cool

  • Here Again.50 thumbs up!

  • Had To Come Back Again. What 6 idiots did not like this?

  • I have now watched this video about 50 times - great.

  • 5 stars - great bassline - great execution.

  • Great liks bit you should have let go and lead in the repetitive bits.

  • superb bass player check out nick heywards solo album north of a miracle for more of this awesome bass

  • @paul24w - Did Les play on that album? I always wondered if he did. There are some tasty fretless lines in some of Heyward's solo stuff.

  • @zumazmusic pino palladino another super bass player from around the same era

  • I had To COme Back And Listen Again.AWESOME!!!

  • Anyway, let me know if you'll be gigging in LA again soon. Would like to come down and check it out. Take care & Happy Christmas.

  • oh yeah 1 more thing, I took a look at UR website & it was suprising to me where U grew up at. I grew up not far from you around the same time over in the Duarte Monrovia Pasadena areas. Buddy of mine back then was dating a girl over at Garfield and I remember crusing down there. I started off playing bass in high school and luckily my high school had a place for me a bass player in the big band. Moved on 2 guitar then keyboards & computers in electronic music like YMO, Tangerine Dream etc

  • @GunzDonovan - Hey man, that is an awesome story. My brother went to Garfield High. I would have gone there but I went to Los Angeles County HS for the Arts instead. I love Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk myself. I haven't gigged much lately. I usually just do fill-in gigs for absent bass players. I'll let you know if anything cool comes up!

  • HI Zumaz, good to see you posting on here again. LOve plus one has been my oldest fav song since I was in 7th grade. I taught myself to play the whole bass line just like you and it was the most fun. Wish I had an Aria pro like yours though. Very Sweet. I remember how popular they were back in the early 80s with John Taylor playing one as well as the guy in Hair cut one hundred.

Im in Ventura, are you gigging in Los Angeles at all soon?

Would like to come see you play at a show.

    - Blake

  • Wow man, this is way too awesome!

  • Good job bro.

  • I really enjoy this song and appreciate your performance. Thanks!

  • well played - loved it!

  • Thank you posting this... really enjoyed watching you play

  • To my ears you nailed it! Bravo! You have not posted to youtube in quite a while, hope all is well with you! Take care!

  • @Videodrome06 - I am fine, thanks for your concern. I just have a lot going on. Be back soon!

  • SO Awsome had to watch it again

  • fantastic job, man. always loved everything about this track and could never quite fully hear what was going on with the bass line. it's a pretty impressive piece.

  • I agree with SmokeBojangles...Boy Meets Girl is a better one than Love Plus One....I tried it on my bass playing it by ear...I cant stop playing it !:)

  • @sportdc - Boy Meets Girl IS one awesome bass line!

  • I think its actually pronounced "Names" ;)

  • Boy Meets Girl Is another Good One

  • @SmokeBojangles - Oh yeah, that one is great.

  • Cool! Is That that F G C and a D? Or Is That a Dim With a F bass?LOVED IT!

  • Hey, Zuma any chance of slowing this down for us less technical? ;-)

    Dying to learn it..

  • great bass playing, great song

  • i love this song the bass riff is kind of funky

  • Sweet.

  • This is great! Being able to focus on one instrument kind of puts a new spin on the song.

  • WOW!!! great gob. Maybe you've never heard of them but can you PLEASE do Penthouse and Pavement by Heaven 17. I always thought the bassline was killer on that tune. He sounds like an awesome bass player.

  • brilliant hee hee u have to swing bass from side to side and have a loose jumper hanging over shoulders

  • Great job on a great bass song. I love the groove of this tune. As a bass man myself, this one is one of my favorites.

  • Very nice cover... haven't heard that track in years... bravo.

  • goddamn, that's pretty sick. i've always dug this track.

  • well done man that realy hits the mark!

  • Haircut 100 has awesome bass lines! Lots of passing tones and neighboring tones.

  • my son is interested in learning bass. ur videos are incredible! keep up the good work.

  • Really? How about I do an easy Smith's song?

  • Definitely. You most definitely should... Only a few easy Smith's songs though for a beginner... Maybe "How Soon Is Now"? Quite simple - not as dextrous as say "Barbarism Begins At Home". (which coincidentally sounds like a Duran Duran bassline!). Your work here on YouTub is brilliant zumazmusic!

  • I never realized what a terrific bass line underscored this song... and its really easy to play along, note for note (ok I've been playing bass for almost 45 years! lol!). Thanks for posting!

  • thoughtful and helpful. i'm laughing at myself, totally: i'm in my 40s, was around when this song (really, one of the truly great 80's crest-of-the-new wave pop songs) came out. and somehow, it has managed to totally escape me what a very interesting and intelligent bass line kurks in the pocket of this song. a grateful knuckhead says thanks for breaking it down. nice axe, too, btw. cheers!

  • Thanks steakboy66! I really appreciate it. I'm not too far away from you. Knuckleheads unite!

  • Awesome job!!

  • Loved it! One of my guilty pleasures... =)

  • man...I have to thank you...because of you and listening to you playing the bass of this? I know listen to this song with the bass amplifier on when I listen to it in my ipod...the bass is so good in this, u wonder why its not more prominant. anyway great job, and thank you...esp @1:40

  • man that sounds good..never noticed it on love plus one...it should have been more prominent..love that sound.

  • had to come back to this page to see you play this after what we talked about...you are right that it has alot of hidden things to it....but as i said...that whole album should have had all gold out of it..the whole album is wonderful and technically challaging...hearing this stuff and playing it makes me very proud..owning the same bass practically is just an honour to play and to own..its got to be my most priced possessions..

    D

  • I always loved the Bass and this group. Great job on this song. Bass sounds awesome and has looks to match.

  • its because he is using the same bass that was used for the song! les nemes played a black one..ive got the same bass in a light woodden color..they are very uniqe instruments to say the least..ive owned fenders gibsons steinbergers you name it ..the aria sb 1000 is my basss of choice and my all time favorite bass..:) its got this tone and sound that no other bass seems to have.

  • nice job...if you are wondering what the guitar player does at the beginning...it's a tape speed change - ah, the days of analog

  • I guess you're right. Thanks!

  • What a nice feel you have. Nice sound, and a beautiful bass guitar. Thanks, Bro!

  • Nice to hear the bass on this song, Otherwise you have to listen very hard when listening to the actual song.

  • Thanks...this is why I do all of this...so you CAN hear the bass clearly and learn from there.

  • Nice smooth playing. Great bass sound (and you play with a great feel) as well given what I am listening to it through. I play drums and I have always loved and appreciated the bass part to that song. Thanks for sharing. Oh, and Go Wings!!

  • Thanks a lot!! Nice song and very good playing.I,m trying with my washburn T24,some parts look a little difficult for a beginner like me,but keep trying.Greeting from Spain

  • Nicely done.

  • Great song and GREAT bass playing! I have seen a lot of people post comments railing on the song, but it is just a nice FUN song. The kind someone should make more of. Life is serious enough without everything smacking us in the face. I like fun songs. Once again... EXCELLENT bass playing... I'll look at some more of your work.

  • nice

  • Nice tone, nice playing, cool song!

  • What´s the "LEsson" in this Video?^^

  • Ah yes, well spotted. I have changed the title. This one slipped by me.

Still, I believe there is a lesson in hearing the bass loud and upfront like this.

  • Well, that´s a help for Transcribing...^^

    And that´s great, don´t get me wrong^^

  • Always loved Haircut 100, even their b-sides were classics. Good old Leslie Nemes.

  • I'm listening right now...awesome...and it sounds like a Duran bass line. Andy Rourke is pretty bad ass too.

  • Love this song and superb bass playing dude, 5 stars from me, have you listened to the bassline on The Smiths - Barbarism Begins At Home (Live)? Its awesome! ☺☺☺

  • ur low e is out of tune

  • I don't think so man. I'm very open to criticism but "out of tune?" Nope! I tune to A440 for every session. What you may be hearing is that 80's tracks are often sped up to "tighten up" the feel. I try to compensate for this by slowing the track down but I assure you that my bass is in tune with itself. Also, the Aria SB1000 has very distinctive overtones. These may sound "sharp" to you.

  • Sound in tune to me.

  • a great song from the 80s covered brilliantly, cant wait till my skill on the bass is good enough to play that...

  • Awesome! I was just listening to Pelican West. Going to give a go at transcribing "Milk Film".

  • I think you mean "Milk Farm" and yeah, that's a cool little happy tune!

  • Hi Zuma,

Are you using any effects on this bass line? Seems to have some extra compression?

  • That's how an Aria SB-1000 sounds.

  • As I own an Aria SB1000 I am fairly familiar with it's sound, thats why I asked as it sounded a little brighter than au natural. ;-)

  • Guys, I can't remember if I used compression on this one but I usually do. I run through a small Alesis NanoCompressor and then give it some more compression with the built-in compressor in ProTools.

  • I have heard ProTools is complicated to use? How do you find it?

  • I don't think ProTools is difficult if you have used another audio program in the past. They are all very similar. It could be a little steep for a beginner but it's not that bad to get the basic functions going.

  • I love it man!!!

  • u cant beat a bit of bass from the 80's

    frankie goes to hollywood

    duran duran

    level 42

    the jam

    haircut 100

    kajagoogoo

    spandau ballet

    altered images

    madness

  • An excellent version my friend - as usual!

Someone below said this was basic compared to Duran bass lines.. Mmmmmm clearly not a bassist!

    Well done Zuma!

  • after watching all the Duran Duran videos man does this sound basic. I love love love Duran Duran and have forevah. That disco loving bass was always a big draw. And while I;m at it -- the guitar playing of Andy Taylor rocked! He doesn't get enough respect either. No one in that band ever does.

  • Z-man you've gotta post more. These all rock. Good job.

  • I think all the problems you had with this one, stem from one basic mistake. You forgot to tuck your aron jumper into your trousers (pants to our American friends)

  • WOW that awsome dude i wish i can play like that in ur Rio video a saw a cat just as u were about 2 play

  • You got good taste!!!

  • so ya like bass? LOOK UP NOMEANSENO.

  • i've got 3 Dingwalls but i always wanted an SB-1000. Love the narrow string spacing and the tone. Like the color of yours.

  • I love your videos!

  • Awesome!All your videos sound great,nice job.

  • Fantastic stuff, specially rhe pinkie finger harmonics - superb dude :)

  • Thank you for sharing. Do I spy a black long haired kitty tail @1:10? =^.^= PeacexXx!!!

  • Ha! I didn't even notice that myself. Well spotted. That's Sugar. She's the one in the Girls on Film video as well.

  • Yes he has. Go check it, it's just naaasty.

  • Fantastic. :)

  • i love it

  • It's funny that you'd say that wolfboyz. He reminds me of Ed Norton too. Zumas Rocks!!

  • i was listening to that song(favorite shirts boy meets girl)and it kinda sounds similair to a duran song in a way, maybe because there from around that same time?

  • Excelente performance amigo, buen trabajo... sorry if you don´t undertand Spanish, i said great performance my friend, good job!!! en verdad que este es un hombre talentoso ;)

  • sweet man love it

  • You sound a lot like Edward Norton.

  • I was just jammin' on some haircut last week. One of those all time fav bands of mine.

  • Great song. Thanks for your help.

  • Great stuff....beautiful playing.

    Isn't that a great instrument ?

I used an SB 1000 bass back in 1983 to record the track "Get Off My Case" and others for our second Virgin album "Pictures On A String". I rented it in London for the sessions. Was very pleased with it.

Thanks for these great videos !

    Nicholas West

    Comateens

  • Just listened to you guys. I really like your stuff. One of my all time favorite movies is Mad Monster Party and you guys definitely fit the bill. Awesome!

  • fuk ya!...dude thank you!, i have been wandering why i love 80's music so much lately...i think that is what sets 80' r and B and new wave aside from music today...the base line. A great deal of music (indie etc) today does not have a catchy base-line. it has no back bone...it does have texture but that's it. whereas the 80's music had less texture but was hella catchy...what do u suckas think? werd.

  • Not only that man but I think that as a whole 80's era songs are just better songs. Even if you break them down to just guitar and voice (or piano and voice) I think they hold up better than songs of today.

  • thnx, i think grunge as a whole is a pretty disappointing genre...except for a song or two i don't think even 20 years from now anyone will be playing or remembering grunge. those songs don't move you at all. the only music that has really inspired me since the 80's as a whole has been the music put out by Dj's and turntable-ists9like those remixes etc)... what do u think? fyi, i am 40. so maybe i am partial to the 80's.

  • Come to think of it, Grunge IS Disappointing in bass. Man, I don't listen to songs with good bass enough. I listen to Primus, But that is taking a whole different approach to bass than what I should listen to!

  • i hated grunge also...i liked the clean cut sharp lines of the 80s...grunge was a poor american answer to punk in a sense..punk made more sense though..grunge was just depressing and boring..couldnt dance to it...but if you were feeling depressed it was just the thing..id rather sit down and hear morrissey and be sad...grunge was dumb..looked like a lumber jack convention sounded like poo, so i say no thank you..lol

  • my response, Alice in Chains, i love 80's also, but Alice in Chains takes the 90's

  • I've a SB 900, love it to bits! The action is incredible.

I use low action to get insane iron maiden heavy percussive lines using just a bit of chorus.

This bass made me the player I am today it's amazing! The low action allows slides, and false harmonics.

    Well performed!

  • Playing this song on my drumkit in my livingroom!! I have always loved this song

  • Cool, some of the Haircut 100 stuff is damn hard on the kit. I'm talking about when they do all those latin beats like "Lemon Fire Brigade." If it's not rock or funk I'm lost on the drums but I'm just a wanna-be drummer.

  • Dude, you are one hell of a bass player!!

  • That guitar is beautiful. i have a couple Dingwalls, but i've wanted an SB-1000.

  • Love it thanks

  • great job, enjoyed it very much

  • Great Player, thanks for the video!

  • Nice!

  • Good bit of bass playing that mate.

  • Good bit of bass playing that mate.

  • Impressive!

  • loved this. I always knew it was a great record but yes the bass is very clever.

  • excellent - thanks for sharing!

  • hi. great vid. but having same problem as below. if have tab send me it. cheers.

  • can anyone please tab this track off...These lesson is ace if the tempo is followed but we cannot see the fret positions !!!

  • hi. im only 16 but love 80s music. wondering if you could put up some other 80s bass lines. maybe some nik kershaw or some 80s one hit wonders. cheers. like all lessons by way especially 'serious' by duran duran.

  • my main man go for it.realy good music

  • Gosh I've loved this song for over 25 yrs, and never realized what an intricate bassline it has! Thnx for posting! What fun!

  • This song on the Guitar is difficult because

an inline mixer muting style on the lead guitar. It goes like:

    F and C intro

A right hand palm mute with playing only 5, 4, 3 string

    or

a very, very soft pick to mute 5, 4, 3 string

change strumming pattern in chorus down (3) stroke on the "C" chord than go to G.

Sometime their a slow hand method second guitar in the background.

  • Very cool. Always looking for interesting old bass lines...

  • thank you for posting this.that is what I would like to see more of on YouTube.basslines from great 80's songs.

    Do you know any INXS?

  • Incredible talent..This bass line haunted my mind for 20 years..

  • I just listened to their second album called Paint and Paint. Very rare, hard to find and full of even more incredible bass!

  • hey man congratulations, you played excellent!

  • ssd basses are the coolest.that and a trace elliot stack.

  • Spectors kick ass! If you like the Spector neck you will like the Aria SB1000 neck or some Warwick necks as well.

  • I always thought alot of the notes in that bassline were alot less staccato than that.obviously i was wrong.

  • Awesome man. I actually really like the harmonics you added.

  • That was AWESOME!

Thanks for sharing that with us!

  • tHATS A COOL BASSLINE.

  • spectacular :D

    by the way nice guitar!

  • Very good!

  • OK, very good man , I'd like to play like this

  • Z-Man, Awesome!!! I too have always loved the bass line in this song.

Could you post the effects setting your using.

    Thanks

  • Just an Art Tube MP-1 preamp and a little compression with an Alesis Nano Compressor. Ratio of about 4 to 1, threshold set to give me about 3 db of squash, fast attack, medium release. Hope that helps.

  • Great stuff on a great bass! Good job, man!

  • dude u rock!

  • Awesome videos! I love SB's, I'm hooked on the things. I've got two at the moment. An '87ish? SB Elite II and an '07 SB 1000CB. Both different basses but very nice. Very recogniseable Aria tone from each! :-) Keep up with the video's, maybe I'll post some sometime.

  • Awesome bass playin homie!

  • Five stars. Period.

  • That's possibly the only 1980's Aria SB being played on youtube at present. Lovely instrument. What strings are you using?

  • Thanks! Using DR Lo-Riders Med gauge (45-105) Awesome strings! I love DR's. I'm dying to try the Sunbeams on my Jazz bass.

  • Awsome, great job...good song.

  • how gay is that! shut up and play the song!

  • why dont you shut up id like to see you play that. this guy puts his time into making these great videos and ur a jerk

  • Good job. I like hearing and seeing great bass-lines played; especially those that are creative and original. Unfortunately, you don't hear much of that anymore...maybe things will change. How about posting ABC's "Poison Arrow" bass-line?

  • I've been thinking about doing that one! It kicks serious ass that bass line. It sounds like an Aria SB bass as well. Anyone know for sure?

  • I don't know for sure. In the music video it looks as if he's playing a Fender, but it's hard to tell. All I could see were the tuning keys; and the head was shaped like a Fender. Again, that was in the music video not the studio.

This is coming from a 28 year old that plays guitar and has limited knowledge of the bass.

  • Hi, Firstly thanks for the going to the trouble of breaking down all these old bass lines. Without being a name dropper I know Stephen Singleton once of ABC, the bass in question was a Musicman Stingray which belonged to the producer Trevor Horn. Just for you trivia fans the album also featured a Fender Jazz Fretless and an SB but not sure of the model, not sure the 1000 was in exsistence in 1981/82?

    Steve.

  • Awesome. Thanks for the info. All I know for sure is that there were SB's in 81/82. It's a great tone either way.

  • y love this song. Very well you play good...

  • Words can't describe this.

  • Loved the ad hom fill at 3:42.

  • Amazing. Can you please do the bass line from "Its My Life", by Talk Talk?

  • Hmmm maybe...have you heard No Doubt's version? Tony Kanal kicks a** on that one.
