  • Ah yes, Paul Morressey, the hilariously absurd alter ego of the normally shy and vulnerable Steven Patrick Morrissey.

  • This interview is so awkward haha

  • great

  • @cossack77 addicted to love - Robert Palmer

  • @MrRichieful HA!

  • Anyone know what chords Johnny is playing at 1:47-2:05?

  • @cossack77 G, D, Am, C, D I believe, enjoy.

  • Those kids all look like inbred zombies. But I guess it IS England so..

  • Nice way to ruin the beautiful acoustic version of This Charming Man, kids....

  • THEY DON'T EVEN SPELL MORRISSEY RIGHT!

  • Just realised that the silly girl in yellow at the very start is Lulu's sister.......

  • The acoustic rendition of "This Charming Man" is so beautiful! <3

  • This is so funny.

  • teehee, this made my day;')

  • Aye, play "Reel Around The Fountain" on a kid's show. That's well appropriate.

  • Morrissey is quite good at generall speaking. like bowie he could be a voice on documentarys ect

  • Johnny's so adorable...i love his hair...

  • This is quite bizarre...

  • The 'Paul' part takes peoples attention off the fact that 'Morrissey' is spelt wrong aswell on this dodgy interview.

    Paul Morressey...

  • funny how its always just morrissey and marr doing the interviews as the smiths , you wouldent have a band without drums and bass !

  • I love the Smiths, but Morrissey just seem like a douchebag here.

  • @tuckerishere He actually seems a lot less douchy than usual to me, and I like them too. At least he appears to be putting some thought into his answers.

  • "When i was about 9, i was a [WHAT?] little bully"...?

  • they cant even spell his name right lollolol

  • If only folks would swallow their egos and be charming.

  • lol paul morrissey

  • lol mike joyce at the end in slow mo is so creepy

  • love how the kids don't know the song but are forced to sing this charming man to different tune anyway

  • Fuck me, I remember this. I've always believed they got their name as Morrissey states, due in part to some of the pretentious names bands had at the time. Another theory is he pulled it from Mark E Smith of The Fall. By the way, I'm Scottish, a miserable bastard, 48 years old, called William and a Smiths man 'till I die!

  • Paul morrEssey, they don't even made the mistake with the name but the last name too

  • haha i love that pose he strikes when he says the ordinary foke of the world should show their faces haha \ -_- /

  • 0:19 please! what´s the name of that song??????

  • @cybernautaconfundido Reel around the fountain, by the smiths of course

  • @cybernautaconfundido "Reel Around The Fountain"

  • Morrissey always seems a little different when Johnnys around.

  • @Awesomex80s how so?

  • Wow, for a Smiths fan this is quite amazing! Paul Morrissey? LOL.

  • MOZZ TOLD HIS NAME WRONG AND THE PRODUCERS HAVE BELIEVED!!!!!!!

    PAUL MORRESEY... LOL

    HE´S SO CUTE

  • A LOVE YOU THE SMITHS...

  • This is hilarious.

  • this weird shows ideas you can find only in the 80's

  • can anyone tell me the chords that johnny marr plays in this charming man, cant find them anywhere

    cheers

  • I was just waiting for him to belt out 'Handsome Devil.'

  • how can the actual programme get his name wrong :| i pity those fools.

  • @ChloeLikesWonderpets Paul Morressey was the director of 'Flesh', one of Morrissey's favourite movies, a still of which appears as the cover to their debut album. Knowing Morrissey and his sense of humour he probably told the programme makers that was his name for a laugh.

  • I especially like the part about Morrissey and school, I can relate to that for sure.

  • The second I saw the "Paul Morrissey " bit, I smiled, scrolled down the page, expected a shitstorm and got a shitstorm. LOL

  • Flowers don't burp haha

  • Comment removed

  • I believe this is a clip from TV-am the 1980's breakfast TV show. The presenter is Edwina Lawrie who is Lulu's sister.

  • Comment removed

  • On a kids TV show? YCNMIU.... Fucking brilliant!

  • That Paul guy looks like some famous singer...

  • @kallspel yeah, wasnt he from like this indie band?

  • Lol Paul Morrissey.

  • Hmm, let's consider the songs in that clip: Reel Around the Fountain about child grooming, This Charming Man certainly NOT just about "people being charming", Hand in Glove containing the line "The sun shines out of our behinds", and What Difference Does it Make again about being led into perversity by an older person - I think Morrissey loved the black comedy in this whole set-up and couldn't believe the film-makers hadn't listened to any of The Smiths' lyrics before doing this.

  • Being born 7 years after they split up, it feels weird hearing the smiths being referred to as "brightest new sound".

  • Okay.....WTF!!

  • freakin awesome! woahh

  • thanks for this!

  • Reel Around the Fountain....a song about blatant child grooming.....played here. Dear God, people are stupid.

  • @MrScr3wy Stupid or wickedly humoured.

  • god i've been trying to find this on youtube for agess...this busts me up laughing!

  • Excellent video !!!!!!!!! Omg !

  • So what do we have in this interview?

    1) a bunch of super-scary puppets,

    2) an incredibly cheesy newspaper act,

    3) not only the wrong first name for Morrissey, but also a misspelled last name which he has probably told them on purpose,

    4) a bunch of kids not knowing who they have in front of their very eyes,

    5) a Johnny Marr barely able to keep from laughing,

    6) and last but not least a whole heap of epic quotes from the ever so brilliant Morrissey.

All interviews should be like this.

  • LOL MIKE JOYCES FACE AT 4 ; 35

  • fucking kids didnt do know they were talking to gods

  • @JURYJOHMZOMBIE HA HA

  • @mufc99ok i told you so

  • @JURYJOHMZOMBIE its just when you look back you realise what a great great band the smiths were and still are , compared to the shite thats out today, legends

  • @mufc99ok true so true

  • better than waving socks about, lol.

  • they guy who walks behind morrisey at 1:08 is sporting my current hair style - mad beard and power mullet.... if was good enough to share the stage momentarily with morrisey in 1984, it's good enough for me...

  • "its better than waving socks about" hahaha

  • Loving This!! The Smiths made simple for the younger generation. Priceless! The Smiths have got to be one of the greatest bands in the world EVER!

  • 3:52

    THAT QUFF!

    x3

  • "who are the smiths?"

    "we're the smiths"

    omg the cheese :')

  • I have to say I'm suprised that Morrissey agreed to do that ridiculous newspaper act. I think the comment below is correct in saying that he probably told them he was called 'Paul' to take the mickey. Everything he says is either hilarious, true or a combination of the two. Long live Morrissey

  • lololol, wtf?? paul? did he purposely tell them that was his name?

  • LOL @ 1:28 THE SCRIPTED CHILDREN wuy dya hold flahss when ya singg? <333333333 how delightful

  • why is paul morressey running around england in that Morrissey mask

  • why the hell didn't i go to that school

  • "i think its nice to instil these words into peoples brains and hopefully they will rub off and create a new generation..."

didnt work, sadly, but... nice thought moz :-)

  • Paul morressey really

  • effortlessly cool

  • i cant hear it quite clearly, anybody can tell me why they call themselves the smiths?

  • @milklauz Morrissey picked the most plain, generic name in the world, because he felt it was time for "the ordinary folk in the world show their faces."

  • @sallyheartjack thanks:)

  • @sallyheartjack Didn't they call themselves The Smiths because the name was often featured in Beyond Belief, one of morrissey's favorite books?

  • @brownteal21

No. One of Marr and Morrissey's heroes was Patti Smith.

  • @ahr8p Alright, maybe. I don't think we'll ever know for sure unless we asked the guys themselves. There are a lot of theories.

  • @brownteal21

Morrissey said that in interviews. It's also in the authorized book by Len Brown about him. A good book!

    w w w meetingswithmorrissey com

  • @ahr8p Thanks maybe I'll check that out.

  • ooooooooooh paul is morrissey first name

  • haha i really thought when asked "who are the smiths" they were just going to leave it at "morrisey....johnny marr..." it always seems to just be the two in interviews that they were probably really close to leaving it at that!

  • morrissey sounds like he is reading from a script, unusual for him i thought he wouldn't conform to stuff like that

  • i wish he waved socks about!

  • My favourite use of the word 'revolting' ever.

  • paul morrissey was a very important cult director which worked with Andy Warhol. The cover of the first Smiths LP was taken from one of his movies

  • Best thing I've ever seen.

  • It's true, Paul Morressey is a fantastic singer.

  • @RockManX9Productions hahahahah wally

  • Obstreperous.....best word ever 3:15

  • KIDS should run interviews everywhere lol xDD

  • They made an ap-Paul-ling mistake here

  • hahaha love how they take the piss out of em hahaha

  • Stephen Patrick Morrissey! Santa Maria!

  • 2:23 lol at their head tilt :D

  • paul llolololool

  • i love this mahn!

    im gonna watch it again!

  • Haha, i like the way they called him Paul, haha

  • "why do you hold flowers when you sing?"

    "because I'm fucking Morrissey"

  • 1:43 loving Mozza's little pose with the flower - "So why not?" :)

  • the drummer at the end looks like Tom Cruise yeee

  • Same drummer from The The?

  • @fejkram Joyce didn't play with The The (Johnny Marr did). Joyce played with Morrissey, Sinéad O'Connor, Suede, Buzzcocks, Public Image Limited, Julian Cope & Pete Wylie (Wah!).

  • Its better than waving socks about lol!!

  • Are they playing Hand in Glove in the school theater .

  • paul hahaha

  • PSYCH

  • good old paul morressey lol

  • Wow, such a precious interview.

  • Man! that presenter is a pig.

Johnny Makes playing the guitar look bloody easy...it ain't!

  • Paul Morrissey?

    What the hell?

    haha idiots.

  • PAUL MORRESSEY? ARE THEY SERIOUS?

  • @novvherefast

Morrissey was probably taking the piss.

  • haha Morrissey and marr seem to me to be taking the piss a little ..... and why shouldnt they this is one the the most ill thought out interviews i have ever seen and it is very very chessy but ultimatly i enjoyed it and i suppose thats all that matters.

  • This is so adorably stupid.

  • who the fuck is paul morrissey!

  • @tinyrebellion hahaha ino !!!!

  • @tinyrebellion seriously

  • Fairly fake, one of my most hated interviews of the smiths.

  • @thetrippstripout i like it, why don't you like it?

  • @alistairproductions opinions, opinions.

  • I swear his name is Steven Patrick Morrissey? :S

Paul doesn't sound very Irish haha!

  • They are so physically cool.

  • wut is he singing at 1:05

  • @tcbkp77

He's singing 'Still ill' at 1:05

  • a song called still ill

  • @tcbkp77

    Still ill

  • I never knew his name was Paul, I always thought it was Steven! Those people need to learn to spell, and puppets? I don't understand...

  • Well spotted, the title at 0:38 says Paul Morressey ! Must have been some bone idol researcher !!

    It's Steven Patrick Morrissey

  • paul morrissey ? i thought his name was steven .

  • Those kids can't sing! Really would be revolting if they signed to record companies! No offence to them...!

It would be awsome if they came to my school!

  • i remember this on at the time thanks for posting brilliant

  • Do you have this charming man?

( but only 1.55 -2.05 version in video)

  • what song is 2:40-3:00?

  • Hand In Glove...

  • Hand in glove

  • my favorite smith interview.

  • god the 80s was weird. whats with the tv programmes?

    the smiths are great though

  • class.

  • Its funny how Mozza says the same things now that he did back then. Proves he is real

  • hes a little bit different now tho

  • Lmao tuneless kids ;)

  • im almost positive his defining the meaning of this charming man is meant to be sarcastic and ironic

  • the smiths love children and who wouldnt, some people have dirty minds.ThE SMITHS IN YOUR ASSEMBLY HALL,HOW GOODS THAT

  • I've seen this video before, but it just hit me how if the Smiths had tried to go and visit schoolchildren in America parents would have been horrified and probably have boycotted it. Does anyone know if anything like this happened in the UK, for any of their appearances with small children? (I'm not at all trying to imply anything about the smiths and small children. At all. I'm just thinking about overprotective parents and the nature of some smiths lyrics, and it got me wondering.)

  • American society is so but so HYPOCRITICAL that they would have HORROFIED if THE SMITHS had appeared on tv,but FORTUNATELY children aren't like the adults who have their minds ROTTEN and full of BAD FEELINGS,oh they used to be scandalized with MADONNA ON THE BLOND AMBITION TOUR(especially on the masturbation scene) but MADONNA sold more tickets in AMERICA than anywhere on that tour, but THE SMITHS are in other level MUCH MORE THAN MADONNA and any other artist

  • Who's Paul Morressey?

  • @iainfuck A filmmaker. He made Andy Warhol's FLESH with Joe Dallessandro (the guy in the cover of Smiths' debut album). They got to be kiddin'! They made a terrible mistake, jajaja.

  • @iainfuck

Paul Morrissey was a director. He actually directed the movie _Flesh_, and a shot from the film was used on the cover of the Smiths first album.

In short, I think Morrissey was messing with the producers of this program. (Sarcasm) I mean he and Johnny take this appearance so seriously (/Sarcasm).

  • noel gallagher now plays that guitar at 3:11

  • whatta waste!

  • johnny marr is so small.

  • Can anyone tell me the name of the song at 3:48?

    Cheers!

  • it's the end of what difference does it make

  • What Difference Does it Make?

  • One of my favs because it depicts the innocence of that decade Singing for kids, interviewing with no makeup or "styling", playing live on spot with horrible acoustics and simplicity, simplicity, simplicity. The music and lyrics speak for themselves with no need for computerized flashy new 3D inventive groundbreaking CGI animation...

  • I suppose you couldn't tell school kids that the fact 'This charming man' was about a guy who didn't know what side his bread was buttered!

  • Wrong. It's F# Major, C# Major, G# Minor, B Major, A# minor.

  • This Charming Man is based in A major; Johnny's quoted as saying " I'm tuned up to F# and I finger it in G, so it comes out in A." The chords in the song are Bm7, D, E, F#m, A during the verse, and then D9, C#m7/E, F#m7, B7(+9), and B in the chorus. not in order at all, but those are the chords used.

  • When Morrissey says "We are the Smiths" pointing to him and Johnny, he should have left it at that. Would've helped him in the court case against Joyce. lol

  • this video made me laugh so much i cried...litterally.

  • It was obviously a primary schooler who did the on screen graphics. Wrong name and wrong spelling of Morrissey!

  • ha ha "paul" morrissey haha

  • Anyone can play this?!

  • flowers dont harm anyone

    unless you get hayfever

    or there weeds

    or dont smell nice
