Instead of bits of titanium make a little larger but not compressed ball of very fine long titanium shavings like from a lathe and put the ball on fire. I did that once and it litterally lit up mine and the neighbors house and i got pretty much blind by the light because dam that was bright almost more then magnesium.
They're physicist. I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing. Agreed, it shouldn't be done by the lay man, but if you know how it works and you can be safe while doing it, there's no harm done.
I don't know why people think physics is so complicated. It's mostly just finding creative ways to set things on fire.

The aluminum effect looks like thermite, what they use in controlled demolition.
I would be afraid. I would keep this horse play at liquid nitrogen and carbonic ice.
