Decca did a great job with the guitar sound, especially on the lead guitar break. They didn't have a sympathetic ear for Buddy's vocals though. Buddy is a genius (and genius, like rock n' roll) never dies. Happy 75th birthday Buddy.
I like this original version of That'll Be The Day. This first version is better than the other, second version. Buddy Holly is my favourite rock legend.
@MrBioExplosive It's played differently, without Holly as a producer, in a different key and yadda yadda yadda :P He does utilize the hiccups here, maybe not as much though, I've never really noticed...
@chewytoes911 Remember it's a demo and they didn't have the technology of today or later yrs.,It's still good and I like how you can really hear his guitar tone, goofball it doesn't suck
@chewytoes911 You're allowed to have an opinion, but don't be such an asshole about it :P He's just saying, "what did you expect?" My opinion is that you're too hard on the song, just as my opinion is that you're an asshole, that's my opinion, but it ain't a nice one, there's a fine line between freedom of speech, and being an asshole.
That's why I'm gonna say you're a prick instead of an asshole :)
I bought this when it was released in England - I already had everything else that was out at the time. The label says with theTthree Tunes who were Sonny Curtis on lead guitar, Don guess on bass and Jerry Allison on drums. Buddy was not allowed to play on these sessions but what a great job Sonny Curtis did. He wrote I fought the law in 1959 which is still played by live groups in pubs and clubs.
This is the first session, the one with Decca. The ones we all know were made later in Clovis, NM. Those were the hits. But when Buddy made it big, these were released. Also, when the Buddy Holly movie was a hit, all the tracks were rereleased. These were too (The Decca Nashville session recordings).
Buddy holly was one of the few that wrote his own Music, when he signed to Decca, they ran the show so he decided to pull out but they refused to give him his music telling him he cant remake any of the 5 songs he made with them that summer with another recording studio. He ended up being signed to two lables at one time and Decca tried to sue Brunswick untill they found out they are part of Brunswick...
BTW, your record player is playing it too fast. Compare it to the CD or cassette tape version and you'll see what I mean.
The song on CD or tape is exactly 2 minutes and 27 seconds from the first sound till it fades to silence. Your turntable is playing the song in 2 minutes and 22 seconds, which is 5 seconds faster, and is giving the audio a noticeably higher pitch than it should have.
I'll see if I can post the CD version as a video response when I get the chance.
@MaximRecoil i like the record better i have the 78 Decca one and its great i play it in my record player almost everyday with a replacement needle alot its nice! my friends and i dance to it and me and my girlfriend we make out to it aswell at night she likes Holly like i do! her name is Izzy she is cute n hot! im in year 6 and she is 12 years old i am the same age and she is in the same grade as i am
I far prefer the Decca version. When I was a kid my friend had a Buddy Holly tape with the Decca version on it, which I loved.
The Decca version has a more rock n' roll sound to it, and that opening guitar solo is awesome. I also like the higher voice and the reverb. The Brunswick version sounds more like pop, and I don't like the backing vocals in it.
If anyone wants the somewhat hard-to-find Decca version on CD, it can be found for sure on "The Great Buddy Holly" (MCAD-31037).
That's because Decca in Nashville were into C&W and had no idea what to do with rock & roll. They didn't release the song and owed the rights to the song for five years. Buddy went along with Norman Petty and released the version we all know on Brunswick under The Crickets. Decca eventually found out, but it was embarrassing to sue Brunswick and Buddy, since Brunswick was a subsidiary of Decca! All they could do was to release the version they owed. And the rest is history.
its the first version, recorded in Nashville...they didnt really understand Rock & Roll and had Buddy play it slow and sing in a high pitched key that didnt suit him. (A year or so later, Buddy needed a song for the B-side of "Looking for something to Love" and re-recorded TBTD ; however, this new version of TBTD became the big hit, instead of the A- side)
TBTD was re-record in Clovis as a demo, it wasn't intended to be a master, or a B-side. The tape was shopped around to various labels until it landed on Bob Thiele's desk at Brunswick. Brunskwick liked it so much that it became a master.
My grandmother used to play this album, along with others, when I was a baby. As a result I play guitar, and play in 2 bands. between this and KISS I didn't stand a chance.
The way the story is told today, the folks at Decca didn't quite get where Holly was coming from. And he couldn't make them understand. They tried some cuts and released them as singles but for some reason didn't promote them. It's like Decca never wanted to take a chance and promote something they though wasn't very good. Yet they hung onto his recordings and wouldn't let him re-record and release them, like they knew they were actually good. Listen to "the phone call" and hear Paul Cohen
This is exactly what we tried to recreate at the Rotterdam Block Rock 1958 50th anniversary "memorial concert"! However we had no chance to make it swing like Buddy...
This is the original, and I have it, and it's great. Raw Rock .n. Roll before it was resampled by the modern methods taking some of the character out of the song.
They had a great song, just that the key they were working with here was awkward to sing with. Either sing it low which sounds lame, or sing it high so that you're straining your voice. Decca thought it was awful, which is why I don't understand why Paul Cohen chose to hold it "in the can" while Buddy couldn't legally record it for anyone else for 5 years. I have the recording of Buddy talking about this to Cohen on the phone. The Crickets worked around it, though. =)
Hi tigathawoo True this Version nowhere near as good as the Version that started it all for the Crickets & in turn Buddy Holly. Sounds more like a Demo sent to Studios from a Bad Set up Reel to Reel tape
BUT as the "Thank God for Norman Petty" that surely is a Double Edged Sword."

If True Norman Petty Helped get him started, killed & in Turn His first UK No.1 The Forever Teddyboy
Some of those young artists were smart enough to let someone else handle the MONEY or else they'd BLOW IT. A lot of the old R&B guys blame the promoters and record cos. "BUT THEY KNOW IN THEIR HEARTS" why they had to have help with their money. Little Richard and the early guys would spend every cent. Roseanne got it right when she said NOTHING ANY WORSE THAN TRASH WITH MONEY.
I've been a Buddy Holly fan since 1957, and have never heard this version before. Personally, I think it's just great. Early rock and roll at it's best.
I love Buddy but I've never liked the "hit"version of this song, this version is much better.

Wow. This is great. Lots of echo(spring reverb or some precursor to an echoplex?)
and a higher key I think.
