HYOLA: And i personally don't get all the worship of Layne. He was a great singer but he wasn't the only great singer. I'm glad William doesn't sound like him. That would have been boring.
You don't get why people feel so strongly about Layne and his talent? Why the hell did you become an AIC fan then?
HYOLA: duvall doesn't have a problem hitting the high notes. he just doesn't have the grit in his voice or the credibility to sing songs like "junkhead".
One doesn't have to be a junkie to perform songs about the subject. But you are correct--he doesn't have a strong enough voice to perform them.
Hahaha, i remember singing with them and plugging my ears because of the drums. I remember everything we did during this night. I miss northwest girl choir! Hahaha
I loved seeing them live!!!!!! They were awesome! I really loved William. He has great energy in person, and an outstanding personality. Wonderful smile. He's so good looking! Love Mike Inez' hair. They were really cool, at this show, backstage. So good!!!
This is an excellent cover. I saw Alice in Chains a couple months ago, and it was great. Layne is dead. Very sad, but true. You chumps need to appreciate that you can still see the other members of the band who were equally important to the sound of AIC, and quit complaining. I do not like AIC's new music as much as the old, but the band was bound to change regardless of Layne's death. Most of the grunge/alternative/metal bands from the 90's have changed by now. Just shut up and listen.
What does Layne have to do with this song? Let the man lay in peace. Stop dragging his name through mud simply because you can't accept other talents or that you don't own the band nor the name AIC.
Alice in Chains never covered this song with Layne so comparing William's performance with Layne is null and void.
And i personally don't get all the worship of Layne. He was a great singer but he wasn't the only great singer. I'm glad William doesn't sound like him. That would have been boring.
LEFTYNUTBAG Finally someone else thinks the same as me. I talk to him online every now and then. I ve tried to get him to contact page however he declined. He however tours the us with different Orchestras playing the music of led zeppelin.
Dude, I was there for this concert. The audio does not do them justice as they just plain rocked. It was funny to see all the old farts in the crowd, they were kinda not so thrilled!
@want2rock247 "the credibility to sing songs like 'junkhead""?!! So you require the replacement singer to be a drug addict so that he has cred? And then when he dies from drugs you probably want the next guy to be a drug addict too so that he also has the cred to sing songs like "junkhead"? WTF?
@StratMatt777 It doesn't mean he needs to be a drug addict, he just cant be squeaky clean...and I'm not talking about baby shit like "social drinking". Someone needs to live that rock n roll lifestyle to the fullest to stand in for Layne. He gave himself over to that life for the music and even though he didn't make it, the music produced from it is legendary. Can't have some preacher boy filling the spot, it just comes off fake and insulting.
@MrTufflong Layne didn't "give himself over to that lifestyle for the music". People who become mastered by addictons have deep rooted low self esteem issues that make them want to escape from reality where they feel that they are not good enough.
I'm not fighting with you, but he didn't become an addict for the music. That's just not an accurate statement.
Just imagine the awesome music Layne would be making now if he had kicked the drugs! Poor Layne... :(
@StratMatt777 I'm not saying becoming a hopeless addict was the point, but rather the lifestyle was integral to the development of the band. Without drugs, AIC would have been very different, and quite possibly not as good. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure they're people with high self esteem that do end up addicts, simply for that very reason. The power of drugs needs to be respected at all times.
@MrTufflong Yeah definitely! There are probably plenty of musicians who became drug addicts once they got the money and the lifestyle. Apparently Layne's mom hated his love of music and kicked him out of the house for wanting to be in music when he was 20. There were also issues with his dad. I think he had left them or something. I think he was an addict too. I forget where I read that.
Im sooo thankful they didnt try to find some1 who sounded just like Layne. That could have been disasterous. Duvall has just as much range and vocal power as Layne. I think they found the perfect man to fill LAyne's shoes.
bro, It is the best zeppelin covers you will ever hear... Cantrell is the only guitarist that can play a Page tune justice and thats b/c Cantrell is the "Riff Lord"
Well.. i don't like him in AIC... but, we have to admit he's done a nice job at this song.. great cover.. I hope to regret my words about Duvall, 'cause i like AIC too much... I'd hate if they came up with bad quality songs...
far from it.... their album is insane based on a few songs I've heard and based on the industry insider claims..... as good as ever..... u should never have expected any less of AIC.... unfortunately, I don't think this cover is on the album
....btw, I know this is kashmir, a zep song, but even on this song; I feel he's almost trying too hard to capture some sort of power voice and the rest of the guys in the band are trying to showcase his voice way tooo much, (by choosing this song), and it's back firing on all of them . As I've said somewhere else, maybe it's better William isn't tremendous since that would overshadow Jerry...yet...again...another lead singer getting all the attention. I like Jerry way too much for that.
hehehe...Well, Scottburkitten, I sure got a rise out of YOU...you obviously "FEEL" scared right now that I'm right... DEAL with it!!! Not everyone is going to like Duvalls VOICE. AIC are NOT "Gods". They are talented artists. Stop worshipping them as if anything & everything they do is 'gold'. Get your nose out of their asses and be a man and express your true inner "Feelings" dude cause everything ANYONE says 'is' how they "feel".
Duvall's voice is okay, he can hit the notes, but I just don't like the actual sound of his voice. (nothing personal) but, therefore, I can't get used to Duvall as the new AIC singer. I love AIC, but it's rough hearing them like this. Again, I like Duvall, but just not his sound. I'm not denying his voice range, (well, I don't like the higher pitches), but he lacks something I can't quite explain.....sorry. (idk, trying to sing the style of Layne doesn't fit maybe?)
People should stop complaining about William replacing Layne, if Layne woudl be upset about this then he's just selfish. DuVal is an amazing singer, and it is the best cover of it I've heard, and I think it's great because Jerry Cantrell is one of my heros and my biggest influence, and I'm working on a cover of it with my band, and I found this, so I'm even more psyched about working on it. anyway you put it, AiC is back, and they're not going away, my personal opinion, awesome.
Great cover, indeed! But isn't it funny.. Duvall can sing other bands' songs... but when he's singn' AIC songs... he just..just can't!! Why is that man? - I hope they succeed, though...
Kashmir is definitely one of the best Rock Songs ever written. As a guitar player in a band that covers Hard-Rock and Metal Songs, I can tell you, that's a drag to play,if you decide to play that song, you need an extra guitar, because it requieres open tuning...
And the orchestra in the back, wow, a dream come true!
(I think they wouldn't care about an extra guitar??!!)
I was really thrilled reading comments of the orchestra members!!!!
great cover....its not good to point out the weaknesses in a cover song..covering a song doesnt mean that everybody should sound exactly similar to the original artist..the band that covers the song is free to make it in their style n perform..epic cover of one of the greatest songs ever made..
OMG you got to watch Alterbridge's cover of this song, it is one of the best live performances ever. Tremonti rocks and Kennedy can really sing. When I saw Tesla they were too drunk to perform on stage and falling down. LOL
I'm not a fan of Alter Bridge, but their cover of this song is far superior, vocally, than this. The guy from Alter Bridge at least has a good voice and sings with emotion.
Duvall has a very limited range and his high notes are all gargled and muddy. His voice is never clear. Ever.
The drama and majesty of the song goes flat every time Duvall opens his mouth.
ok if u wanna go by talent then fine. but look wat hes doing and look who hes playing with. maybe hes trying to play a role way to big for his shoes. but u no i really think hes an amazing singer and wat hes doing is really amazing
GhostOfDorothy, to say Duvall does not sound like Layne is an understatement. But to bash a singer who covers a Led Zeppelin tune and sounds almost exactly like Robert Plant is bullshit. This rendition is probably one of the best I have heard being done live other than Led Zeppelin, themselves. Would a band still be the same band if they got a copy of a missing member? NO! They would be a copy. If we can't get the original, sometimes we have to settle for a copy. This song was inspiring, as done.
It's okay but it didn't grab me. I wanted it to say, WOW...but it didn't. I so much needed to like this version due to the changes in AIC but it didn't happen for me.
I think the oppening is so great.... but i think this version with an full orchestra and Pages guitar plaing + plants guitar would be the toip of it.... because I think only plant only can tell the story of kashmir only with his voice.
this is incredebly off the subject but know wat i noticed. in GH 3 they praise van halen ( don't get me wrong zeps better than halen) they always talk about van halen. but do you see ANY van halen songs.....no no you don't. they should zep in GH4. oh and green day. they deserve to be in a GH game as well.
Those annoyed about William and the rest of AIC playing Layne's songs, just wait until the new band WRITES their new songs. What do you expect them to play? Nothing? As if.
I think the idea of using footage of Layne singing on a big screen would also be cool for "Nutshell"...doesn't feel right seeing anyone else sing HIS song.
I didn't know they did this show. I saw AIC last summer, and I thought Mike Duvall sounded really good as the front man. I know alot of people beg to differ, but hey, they're still alive.
you know what would be cool kinda like how queen lets freddie sing on the big screen during Bo. Rhap. they should let layne sing on the screen for man in the box
Kashmir is probably one of the greatest rock/orchestra songs to be written in this millenium. There is a certain power about rock n roll backed up by a symphony. AIC did an excellent rendition of this already awesome song.
I love and miss Layne, but William's an incredible musician and has been for 25 years now. He's an amazingly talented guy, nice in person, and I love to hear them doing this stuff.
I'm not familiar with AIC in concert only their music (heh, sheltered life). Anyway is that an orchestra in the back in support or part of stage show? Rendition of kash is actually not bad at all.
This is a very good cover of Kashmir. The singer has that late-Zeppelin/ Knebworth 1979 Robert Plant sound in his voice. not quite the same, actually, by a long shot but, it is there :).
thanks for posting this!!! i played in the viola section for this show... it was a lot of fun. (i broke a string during "i stay away" right before this and had to play the whole thing in 4th position on the C string)
I hadn't heard them since they got the new singer... he was very impressive.
this was a benefit concert for childrens hospital. at the next orchestra rehearsal after the show they announced that it raised 50% more than their goal!
all those mean alice fans who hate william should take a listen to this. pure genius. and this is coming from someone who absolutely despises led zeppelin.
do you think that covers are automatically worse than the original? i love the vocals more here, and it's more of Alice's style. Anything that Alice In Chains does is genius. duh.
Speaking as a member of the choir who didn't get to sing in this song (but rather had to stand in the back being inconspicuous) - yes, it was pretty damn awesome, even if I couldn't really hear everything that was going on. Thank you for posting this - it's nice to relive it.
Holy shit, William!!!!

Those annoyed about William and the rest of AIC playing Layne's songs, just wait until the new band WRITES their new songs. What do you expect them to play? Nothing? As if.
TFP2000 3 years ago
i love alice in chains in all, but led zepplen sounds soo much better. =]
((were dancin to this song on our dance team were awsome.AB'S STUDIO ONE SENIORS!

wow, beautiful cover.

I think the idea of using footage of Layne singing on a big screen would also be cool for "Nutshell"...doesn't feel right seeing anyone else sing HIS song.
LiasonLoveAlways 4 years ago
I didn't know they did this show. I saw AIC last summer, and I thought Mike Duvall sounded really good as the front man. I know alot of people beg to differ, but hey, they're still alive.

the new singer looks like Lenny Cravitz not a bad singer though but no one will ever match Layne R.I.P

This comment has received too many negative votes show
RIP LAYNE
(FUCK Duvall)
ludwigvan17 4 years ago
Why are you bashing this guy it was Cantrells idea and everyone else in AIC to hire him so lay off of him jeez miss layne to ya know
diemonkeydie46 4 years ago
I don't HATE the guy; he has an awesome voice
but I just think that it was in bad taste to continue under AIC name. They should change their name.
ludwigvan17 4 years ago 3
you know what would be cool kinda like how queen lets freddie sing on the big screen during Bo. Rhap. they should let layne sing on the screen for man in the box
diemonkeydie46 4 years ago 3
They should play all of their shows with Layne on the big screen while they play background. That would be the ultimate memorial.
ludwigvan17 4 years ago 4
Why? Should the Red Sox change their names after Curt Schilling retires?

Kashmir is probably one of the greatest rock/orchestra songs to be written in this millenium. There is a certain power about rock n roll backed up by a symphony. AIC did an excellent rendition of this already awesome song.
tyRONasaur 4 years ago 3
It wasnt written in this millenium.
MeowChef 4 years ago
A Millenium is a thousand years. Are you implying that this song was written more than a thousand years ago. I think not!
tyRONasaur 4 years ago
this millenium is 2000-3000, so it wasn't written in this millenium,

I love and miss Layne, but William's an incredible musician and has been for 25 years now. He's an amazingly talented guy, nice in person, and I love to hear them doing this stuff.

I'm not familiar with AIC in concert only their music (heh, sheltered life). Anyway is that an orchestra in the back in support or part of stage show? Rendition of kash is actually not bad at all.
300minus 4 years ago
This is a very good cover of Kashmir. The singer has that late-Zeppelin/ Knebworth 1979 Robert Plant sound in his voice. not quite the same, actually, by a long shot but, it is there :).
Anthaleus 4 years ago 3
is that singer William DuVall?

Yes.

thanks for posting this!!! i played in the viola section for this show... it was a lot of fun. (i broke a string during "i stay away" right before this and had to play the whole thing in 4th position on the C string)
I hadn't heard them since they got the new singer... he was very impressive.
this was a benefit concert for childrens hospital. at the next orchestra rehearsal after the show they announced that it raised 50% more than their goal!
bratwell75 4 years ago
I would kill to play with a symphony like that! What a performance!

all those mean alice fans who hate william should take a listen to this. pure genius. and this is coming from someone who absolutely despises led zeppelin.
NeedaCoolUsername 4 years ago
well maybe you should listen to the genius which is Led Zeppelin
freakyclown90 4 years ago
sure but alice on led zep is Alice first of all and a bit of led zep anyywayyy
AliceMudGarden4life 4 years ago
i have listened to led zeppelin. over and over, and i still don't like them, okay. not everyone has to love them.
NeedaCoolUsername 4 years ago
i agree but i dont comprehend why you call a cover genius
freakyclown90 4 years ago
do you think that covers are automatically worse than the original? i love the vocals more here, and it's more of Alice's style. Anything that Alice In Chains does is genius. duh.
NeedaCoolUsername 4 years ago
this is why most people despise zeppelin
666varggoth666 4 years ago

Speaking as a member of the choir who didn't get to sing in this song (but rather had to stand in the back being inconspicuous) - yes, it was pretty damn awesome, even if I couldn't really hear everything that was going on. Thank you for posting this - it's nice to relive it.
