  • I like that kicking drill you're doing at 2:23

  • You've got great potential. Doing 3 star training on a wooden man right out the gate... Good man! Just something to keep in mind, even when you're just beginning: Move from your root. Even when you're doing this training, hit a solid stance and move to another one. This will build your foundation and will connect your power from the ground to your waist to your hand. Great job though!!! Keep it up! And if anyone asks, all of the moves you're doing are from Gong Ji Fook Fu.

  • You guys are correct. The dummy is not exclusive to Wing Chun. It is used in several styles and schools. It is Southern Shaolin training tool used in almost every style of Sounthern Chinese Kung Fu. I've seen them in several Kenpo schools, Kali, and even in a Krav Maga school in downtown LA.

  • And to finish off rub your hands and arms in my concotion of poo and wee! NICE.

  • How much do these private lessons cost? How did you take them?

  • Fail.

  • @Malik0403 I want to ban the world "fail" from the internet. Explain why you don't like it. Just writing "fail" is pointless.

  • check out my hung gar videos! :D

  • Try holding a stance before training on a mook jong.

  • good video,nice one

  • good training!!

    your very lucky!!

  • this actually a Hung Gar dummy set, well in the first stages of it.I have seen this before, because HG is a southern form of KF.Hence the similar training tools.

  • Simply seeing that your Sifu had you soak in Dit Da Jow speaks a great deal about the quality of instruction you will receive under his tutelage. Forget the idiotic comments from the peanut gallery, from my youtube experience most of these keyboard warriors have obtained martial arts knowledge from watching youtube and reading articles from wikipedia. Train hard my Celtic brother! Long live the Southern Mountain!!!

  • To those who speak without understanding: Even a fool seems wise when silent!

With that said, the Muk Yan Jong was developed at the Southern Shaolin Temple. Though many variants exist, what so many generically call the "Wing Chun Dummy" is the standard model, and is used by the majority of Southern Shaolin derived styles. It is a training apparatus that is used for many purposes. Furthermore, a martial art that does not evolve in it's methods of training and application is dead and stagnant!

  • I don't see any problem with using a Wing Chun tool with Hung Gar techniques. Even if it ican't be called hung gar anymore, it is still training to improve your power and technique which may be useful in a situation.

  • If I can say, without causing too much trouble, I don't believe the "wing chun" dummy is of wxclusive wing chun origin. Certainly wing chun HAS made it there own. But it is more likely that the dummy was used by most southern styles, which explains the hung gar techniques that work exlusively on the apperatus as will other systems. also out of convenience it's easier to get a wing chun dummy here than it is to get a "hung Gar" dummy

  • @ibuchanan82 I agree also it stands to reason that since tiger crane and wing chun came from the same few people that methods of training crossed over

  • to be honest my new internet friend, its not even always 'perfect technique' that wins. It is conviction. Apply each strike in the 2:20 minute section with conviction and absolution. And yes, it will hurt. Hung gar artists forearms are feared because a block IS a strike.

  • Did you hire this instructor for a private lesson for this technique? The technique is a great one...but power with this kick comes all from the midsection, glutes and legs...the midsection and glutes mostly for the follow up punch.

I suggest hanging leg raises if capable: if not, do hanging leg raises with well co-ordinated 'hanging oblique cruches' which also train your serratus very well if your actually HANGING by your clenched hands overhead.

These exercises will add great power.

  • Very good teacher. Good training

    best wishes !

  • Your right. When I kick fast enough the buttons undo themselves. :)

A game I play is telling a partner EXACTLY which attack I am going to do, and where it's going to hit. Then they TRY to block me. I can't wait to post more videos.

BTW, lets make peace. As fun as ripping into complete strangers can be :P

  • peace made.

Go to frankylau 's page and check out better videos on the Hung gar of the Lau family of which I study, also check out My sifu's videos on hunggaruk

  • Yet another Englishman who feels he can corrupt an art and call it Hung Gar.

This is 'cross training' in a sense: this particular wooden man is NOT EVEN A HUNG GAR TOOL. It is a wing chun tool.

When a 'sifu' starts mixing and matching things from different systems, he is no longer teaching the art. He is teaching an amalgamation of techniques.

This is not Hung Gar. This is a british know it all who talks alot but knows nothing.

  • Says the guy who cant keep his trousers buttoned while kicking a bag.

The wooden dummy is a chinese tool, used by Wing chun artists but has always been used by hung gar artists as well, Don't have to believe me, watch video's of Lau Kar Leung one of the greatest living masters of Hung Gar, Kung Fu, and indead Martial Arts as a whole.

Indeed hung gar and Wing Chun are cousin styles so you will find elements of both systems in each.

I'm not English I'm Scottish you dolt.

  • @ibuchanan82 i completely agree with you, i too am studying hung gar and i have been shown techniques on the wooden dummy.

  • hung gar and wing chun are both southern styles, hung gar dates back well before wing chun, the wooden dummy is not exclusive to wing chun, theres no law against using it if you practice another style, i practice goju ryu , and i can see the usefullness a wooden dummy could do in my own training, does that mean im not practicing goju ryu? bullshit!!!!

  • @B0ngHitta what does it matter? does hitting an heavy bag not make it hung gar? does lifting weights not make it hung gar. this is just another way of training

  • @B0ngHitta Praying mantis, Choy Lee Fut, Hung Gar and Wing Chun all have wooden dummy training. On top of that, EVERY kung fu style is a mix of some earlier fighting methods: CHOY (Gar) Li (Gar) Fut (Gar) as an example. Hell most Hung Gar schools have Lau Gar Kuen mixed in with their Hung Gar forms.

  • Sifu Wyane some people do not deserve this. You are giving it away for free. They dont know what they are getting, I do your suthern kicks are awsom aswell as your hands. People think they are on your level but they are not, Teach Master Teach.

  • i just want to say.

hung gar have their own dummy

    in chinese梅花樁.

I am learning form my stfu,

    i am form hongkong.

  • so How long do you practice?

Do you have to do any meditation or stuf like that?

    Is it easy/fun to learn?

  • The length f practice is up to the practitioner, I at least try to practice my stance exercises and form every day, and practice breathing exercises several times a day. Although I am aware that some people who have a club to attend only train while at the club, thats up to them.

I dont meditate personally but we do have breathing techniques to practice which has similar benefits. This may vary according to what club u attend....

  • What were you using to massage your arms?

Also, after Wayne explained the application of the 'no shadow hook' I realised just how damaging it would be in a fight. It can be hard to realise the practical application from dummy training sometimes.

  • dit dar jow, fall hit medicine, its a blend of herbs and other interesting things traditional chinese medicine designed to reduce swelling and aid the healing process, it's pretty amazing stuff, my arm bruised after training and the bruise was all but gone a couple of days later, considering the concentrated battering my arm took it was remarkable.

Yes exersices need to be taught by a good sifu, otherwise they are just moves.

  • I was learning stances etc ! if you pay even the slightest bit of attention you will see the wooden dummy training is incorporating all of these elements. The first element was 3 star the next was blocking technique then including stances and finally no shadow kick If you want traditional then sit in horse stance for 8 hours a day for 3 months.you will notice i spend hours in horse stance training shown in another video that same day. this "first day" was over 8 hours of training we covered alot

  • If theres one thing i admire about Wayne husbands is his ability to understand and help.

I've trained with other hung gar practitioners who are cocky and mearly laughed at me if i performed incorrectly.

But watching Husbands instruction, im very inspired to train harder in hung gar

    Kudos!

and Good job dude, work hard and see the results

  • my god!!! Wayne Sifu was only demoonstrating slowly and still his No Shadow kick(Mo Ying Tui) was amazing and the man wasn't even trying but then i have seen his other clips here on the tube and all of the them are real impressive like the American guy Sharif Bey these two out standing gentalme nare the future of Hung Ga no doubt about it.

  • no shadow kick is:

    mou ying gerk

    OR

    mou ying teck =]

  • Gungji9 was using mandarin mei ying tui 没影腿 (mei becomes mo in some dialects) It can also be 没影脚 meiying jiao (mou ying gerk)

  • do you speak mandarin( Zhong wen)Rblett? or do study it? i am glad that someone understood what i said as i must admit i had forgotten the Guandong hua for No-Shadow kick( a bit naughty eh).

  • Yes, I study Chinese. It's okay, I think it's good to try and know the cantonese as well as the mandarin, so that you can communicate it with whomever you want to.

  • i agree totally, when i went to beijing i no had idea how many other countries spoke english and this as great as now i have many friends in many countries, but i was a little ashamed that i only spoke english, i realised that in order to make more friends i had to be able to speak another language, now i can speak a little mandarin( i often forget the english for many things) but i cannot write in pinyin so well so i am grateful for your post as it helped me gain a bit more knowledge.

  • Also, if you can try to learn characters, that will be infinitely useful, since all Chinese use the same characters regardless of their spoken language. Characters are a bit difficult, but very useful.

  • this is great, I have been following must of the videos of sifu wayne, always showing a traditional way to do kung fu.

    Congratulations

  • you're lucky to have such a good Sifu

  • yo ibuchanan! at 2:33, the sifu said no shadow kick, so it actually is a sort of low kick or something? cause i always assumed to be a mid or high kick

  • yeah its a low kick, your meant to hook the front leg forward, and then strike back knee or shin. it's called "no shadow kick" due to its speed, also your body is meant to stay still. It was a kick developed by Wong fei hung

  • Check with your chosen style though, many forms use similar names to discribe different techniques

  • no shadow kick is a concept you can do it in many ways...

  • yeah, I believe this true of many aspects of hung gar

  • Good work! Wayne is a great instructor; definitely a reflection of his sifu.

  • Thank you and yes, it's a privilage to have spent so much time under Wayne's instruction. Honestly My mind was the muscle hurting the most at the end of the weekend, he packed in so much information(My forearms and inner hip area a close second i walk like john wayne now)

  • good

  • thank you

  • since u practise hung gar on a wooden man (mok yan jung) its absolutely ok to call it hung gar wooden man...glad to see u put ur very first lesson on utube..coincidantly i just put a wooden man clip up as well...enjoy ur training.

  • Thanks for the comment frankylau, yeah i'm aware i'll be showing my flaws more than anything else but hopefully ppl will see the progression from novice to ... less of a novice! Should be getting more of Wayne up soon too so look forward to that! hope you enjoyed your trip to HK!

  • I apologize for any confusion, yes thats a wing chun wooden dummy, but the drills are found in hung gar as well, the no shadow kick was actually developed by Wong fei Hung himself so u cant get more hung ga than that!, the primary purpose of the exercise was to condition the forearms. Within the next few weeks you should see more demonstrations that are more familiar as Hung Gar, such as iron rings, low horse stance, and hopefully the moi fa kuen form which is what I went to learn that weekend.

  • It's also not good to train in the first day for the wooden dummie when not clear about how the action works.

  • The primary purpose of the drills were for body conditioning, a foundation stone of Hung gar, the medicine at the end is vital to this kind of training. when I say this was my first day understand that this was hour 7 of the first day, it was an intensive long weekend of training, im based in scotland while Sifu wayne is in reading.

  • This is not hunggar wooden dummie style! It's wing chun style!

  • I have changed the title of the video for clarification. Its a wing chun dummy, yes but the drills are hung gar (Hung gar and Wing chun being "related" styles, similarities can be found)
