A test or license to drugs is really stupid. How can you test yourself on a distorted state of reality? You can't test yourself clean because the worry isn't what you do when you're clean but what you can do while fucked up. The only option would be to test the person while fucked up. But even then it would cost a lot of money to do these tests as each different drug would require a different test. You can use the same test for pot as you would for cocain, or heroin, or acid.

i think that's where DNA tests come in. I read a report from the NY Times that since the use of DNA tests, about a quarter of inmates who were scheduled to be put to death were found innocent. IDK if most states use the tests (prolly do) but it is definitely the thing to do. The death penalty may not always be a good thing, but if it serves to psychologically deter potential criminals from prematurely murdering innocent ppl in the 1st place, then well....

Anyone who can make the decison (consciously or otherwise) to kill themselves is mentally ill.
Why would a mentally ill person be sent to hell (if it exists), they aren't responsible, in the same way that someone who is physically unable to save their own life (eg cant hold their breath as long as others, to escape a building filled with poisonous gas (asthma or something)) is not responsible for their own death.

A test or license to drugs is really stupid. How can you test yourself on a distorted state of reality? You can't test yourself clean because the worry isn't what you do when you're clean but what you can do while fucked up. The only option would be to test the person while fucked up. But even then it would cost a lot of money to do these tests as each different drug would require a different test. You can use the same test for pot as you would for cocain, or heroin, or acid.

agreed--i think on a woman's last trimester, the fetus has already developed vital organs & has been proven by doctors that what happens outside the womb, the baby can react to it, ie (music, talking). However, if something happens to the baby during pregancy where the woman's life is at stake, then you save the woman. What happens when someone is put to death, and it subsequently transpires that they were innocent?
Also - The murder that was committed, was a crime. As such the person is a criminal. They are at fault. So what gives the state the right to have that person killed? How is "justice" being done by bringing yourself down to the level of the murderer?

i think that's where DNA tests come in. I read a report from the NY Times that since the use of DNA tests, about a quarter of inmates who were scheduled to be put to death were found innocent. IDK if most states use the tests (prolly do) but it is definitely the thing to do. The death penalty may not always be a good thing, but if it serves to psychologically deter potential criminals from prematurely murdering innocent ppl in the 1st place, then well....

hmm, not exactly sure when the death penalty was used (under civil authority, not military) in the US. Wasnt it barely implemented AFTER WW2 cause I dont remember any report from 1900-1940 about state DP deaths. I need to research states where they use the DP versus states that do not to accurately see the effectiveness of the DP.

Actually the death sentence does not serve to deter potential criminals. What happens is that when you have done something that you know youll probably will get death for, youll make sure that they dont catch you. If you are sure that they will kill you then it doesnt matter if you take out a few cops to try to get away. You have nothing to lose but your life to win. And do you really think that someone would commit a crime if they thought that they probably wouldnt get away with it?

A couple years ago we discussed the same thing in my History class, and it was split pretty evenly between pro and anti-capital punishment.
