It's quite simple. Low pressure over the top of the plane causes vacuum-like conditions, or a "pressure suction." This suction causes the moisture in the air to condense and form clouds over the plane's leading edges. And I don't care what the Mythbusters say: a true sonic boom that low over the ground could shatter your ear drums.
If you don't believe me, go to school and get a degree in Aerospace engineering.
It doesn't do a Cobra >:/ However, it was at that beginning phase of one, he just didn't pull into it. The pilot probably wouldn't be allowed to do a full one either by mandate or electronic limiters, especially at that altitude. In my opinion, the Super Hornet easily should be able to pull it off. It's got the aerodynamic requirements to do so (obviously).
mythbusters proved that the whole "sonic booms shatter glass all over the place" is completely false, they did supersonic passes like 100 feet over the ground and it didn't even break any glass.
@weversonman They also got it wrong. the aircraft they used was the blue angels F-18 Hornet. These arecraft are strip down and made super sleek. They can perform maneuvers that the regular F-18 cant. This sleek exterior reduces the intensity of the compression wave that creates the boom. Put the racks and missiles back on and you'll get a bigger boom. The mythbusters routinely screw up on any myth that requires a more deep understanding or any amount of physical skill to perform.
@Verdigo76 This guy knows what he's talking about... they also take a lot of the radar components out of the nose of the aircraft for air shows such as these which shifts the center of gravity further back on the fuselage making maneuvers you see easier.
@Verdigo76 that isn't true at all I just read the encyclopedia article on sonic booms and it says that the only factors effecting the pressure that will be created are altitude, the closer to the ground the more powerful it will be, and the direction and manouever of the plane, like if it is diving down it will focus the boom more powerfully. So you're saying that a smooth plane 100 feet off the gruond can't break glass but one with a missile on it 50 000 feet up will? That's childish.
Sorry RNTHREE, there was no sonic boom. If you listen to the anouncer, he says it will approach Mach 1 or the speed of sound. You have to break the sound barrier to hear a sonic boom.
I not going to lie, I hated the hell out of this plane for replacing the Tomcat, but seeing it at Selfridge ANG made me beleive that the navy is still in good shape, its still not a Tomcat but it not bad at all great demonstration, and awesome video
if a plane crated a sonic boom that close to groud that would not be good for anyone near it

That was a sonic boom!!! Sonic booms are allowed over restricted military air space in the desert and military air bases!!
urgdaddy 1 year ago
@urgdaddy Not a sonic boom but moisture condensing on the "mach cone". It's damned close...probably in the 750 mph range if near sea level.

f18 hornet, my favorite aircraft.
dutch military uses f16...they could choose between f18 & f16 and they went for the f16 :(

@DethTones I'm guessing it's because there isn't much between your ears that would explode, given the right circumstance. Dick

Good Video, Otho to really capture the speed you should zoom out so people can see the aircraft in relation to the surrounding area.
