Ah, its nice to see old games from my past, Decent, Heretic, DooM, Raptor, Rise of the Triads (ROTT). only full versions I had was DooM, and Heretic...I wonder what I was missing from the other great titles...
Their was always a disappointment with shareware because you got so much that if you got the full game. It just didn't have enough extra stuff and it seemed that the first episode is all you would end up wanting to play anyway.
Shareware was great! Demos are sometimes so short now its crap, and you think why did I bother downloading that. You get too little of a taste.
the only thing that sucked was that with duke nukem 1 and 2 and blake stone, you had to buy the rest of the game, and you could only buy half of the game of the full
It was, actually. ID software did put up a "Get Quake" link on their site a couple years ago that allowed you to DL the full version free of charge. They removed it for some weird reason and put it put for $20 now.
Thank you for the shareware of the shareware of the shareware review, excellent(or whatever you yanks call it). Think this was one of the best ideas ever. However, that went up in the air as soon as companies realised that anything free was costing them server time, and thus fuc*ed us all over. How many people here purchased OG Quake online?
Also, awesome summary (if one could ever be made) of the shareware revolution of the 90s. I've watched a bunch of your videos now and they're pretty good so far. Keep it up!
I regularly look around the PlayStation Netowrk and have a look at what content I can get for my PSP. I go for the playable demos, so I can have a good taste of games to come.
Cool video, I remember playing all those share/demos but I usually got them from purchasing a game as a bonus, from a friend, or the local Egghead Software store. After you've played enough games you can usually tell if the game is gonna suck by the cover art and description. Half-Life for example was the only game I ever pre-ordered and I never played the demo. I knew it was going to be BIG.
And, if you don't like that idea of typing that again and again, you can just put a folder of dosbox for each game, put the same folders and edit that dosbox.cfg putting this lines at the autoexec section
mount c .\*root folder*
c:
cd *name of the game folder*
*name of the executable of the game*
Then you just double click on DOSBox.exe, and there you have your game loaded.
DOSBox is easy to use, just suppose you want to play Alien Carnage, you only have to create a folder on DOSBox (i.e: DOSBox\games), then you create another one on that folder, with the name of the game, open DOSBox, type mount c.\games and there you have it, if you know a bit of DOS it's pretty easy to use.
About the limit. Why is it that people with even more content than you, with a normal account, can make fifteen minute videos. That just blows my mind.

Uhh...Quake and Diablo were shareware ? Man, you're waaaay off in your knowledge.
Oh, and you're also wrong about Half-Life. The demo was called "Half-Life: Day One", and Uplink was a collection of all the things they CUT from the final game, including storylines and locations.
Whoa man, scorched "tank wars" earth had forever gameplay. Some thievesguild k.a. "team17" ripped of the gameconcept and called theirs worms, it is what the losers are playing today. Good video.
Jason this review fucking rocked good job I hope you make lots more plus these awesome PC games make me extreamly jelous that I never got to play these cool games

No, Quake isn't free.
The engine is, which is why it's open source, but the actual game data is not free.
There's still the shareware though, which is of course, free.

I wish people would go back to the old days of including more content in demos, though... It's starting to get absurd how little they put in them.
Some developers don't even release demos at all, and expect us to be satisfied with trailers that don't tell us jack. :(
