oh and the ending... good way to put it. If it isn't such a big deal then WHY does the Catholic church secretly send money to Maine to finance a campaign to ban gay marriage while at the same time denying money to the victims of sex abuse from THEIR priests? Oh and by the way, I'm Catholic...
can we talk about Priests who were supported by Bishops who were Protected by Bishops who were Allowed by Bishops to sexually abuse KIDS, there is a very horrific documentary called 'Deliver Us From Evil' which charts in great detail how the Catholic Church protected a Priest who's sexual abuse of young kids is so terrible to watch, I am so fucking annoyed that the Catholic Church gets away with using GOD's name to spread its fear an hate, be PROUD of who you are GOD is not about hate
Thanks Bill for this video. Of course I agree with you completely. However, it really offends me, as a gay man that was brainwashed in Evangelical Christianity in my youth, that religion is even brought into the discussion of gay marriage. Marriage is a LEGAL union between two people, and god has nothing, or should have nothing to do with it. I think by quoting the bible you give the other side some credibility. Leave god out of it, because god has nothing to do with it.... Thanks!
Obviously never meant to offend you. You should check out my other video, as this one was really rushed for time. But religion had to be brought up, as that's the reason Prop 8 existed. If you look at the full description on the side, you'll see that I took away the credibility by showing a few of bible verses that contradict themselves. I grew up Catholic, and my family is rather conservative and Republican, and even my neighbors had a Yes on 8 sign so I felt religion needed to be tackled here.
Bill, I spoke too strongly when I said YOU offended me. I view marriage as a purely legal and secular institution. Too many people in this country have mixed the two, when they shouldn't be. If you want you god of choice to "bless" your holy matrimony, then that's fine, but the government shouldn't validate it, because that implies that they approve of your religion. Do you see my point? France will not recognize religious weddings. One more thing: I'm legally (married) to my partner in CA!
I'm heading down to San Diego pride in a couple weeks to be with my friends who were going to get married July 11th having been together for over 9 years, but now they can't, obviously. So I'm meeting up with my favorite girls for pride instead.
Oh and lisztnut - I totally see your point 100%. Definitely on your side. Just got a new camera, so I really need to post some new videos.
I liked your point about atheists getting married but I can't say I've heard too many arguments being made about marriage being a religious rite; it obviously isn't anymore. This too shall pass, I'm sure of it. Just keep doing what you're doing.
I've heard the religious argument a lot. My neighbors, my family, and various people in my community. Hell, that was the whole reason prop 8 came about in the first place. But yeah, it shouldn't matter.
I would like to think that the cherry-picking and things like removing homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses, etc. is manifest of people slowly growing out of unnacceptable ways.
lastly, quit using your religion to justify your ignorance. you called scientology a "cult," yet you have clearly been brainwashed yourself. america is a non-religious nation. it has been even before obama "declared" it one. so religion should have no part in personal cases such as gay marriage and abortion.
and as for "re-defining" marriage, america has re-defined marriage like crazy to custom-fit straight peoples needs. it used to be illeagl to divorce, women used to have zero rights in marriage, parents used to have the right to choose who their children married, ect. so the whole "gays cant re-define marriage" argument is invalid.
i say, for all the states that dont allow gays to get married, they should also make it illeagl for straight couples to get divorced.
4:38 i pushed myself to watch at least half of this its so full of b.s. please understand religion; differences in religion progressive revaltion YES various people require Various instruction, RELATIVITY (Truth is relative), BUT, there is ABSOLUTE truth. the CORE ABSOLUTE TRUTHS CANT CONTRIDICT. ALL RELIGION says REGULATE impulses. homo IMPULSES maybe natural, confirmed by science yes, but ALL RELIGION says CONTROL YOUR IMPULSES! "eastern religion" is SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN....
....C.O.$ (scientology) is a BUSINESS CULT. it DOESNT share the same core truths as other religions. see my eternal religion/science 1,2 vids your in serious need. there is no such tthing as race, and what blacks went though were extreme denial of basic RIGHTS for skin color wtf your comparing this to homo BELIEFS? homos ARE DIFFERENT from straight couples/marriage. thats NOT discrimination. homos ALREADY have full equal civil rights and CAN GET MARRIED. but...
1st off you DISTORTED the meaning of religion and your WRONG to censor my comments for confronting that.
2nd, i said a LOT of other things. you IGNORED that and censored them. where did i use profanity, threats etc.? you just didnt wana hear it, lets be honest. what ever...
what is gay bashing? did you get beat up or name called? Everyone gets name called at some point in life for various reasons. playing that card wont make u right or me wrong.
maybe your right, you should censor ALL of my comments. i shouldnt comment that you cant force me to accept homosexuality as moral or natural or marriage for reasons involving biology, logic, law, and my right to have sustain my values. very offsensive and vulgar ay? what a joke. your a biggot i guess...
bill; i want nothing from u. i just thought to leave the comment confronting your misunderstanding of religion and that you cant force me to accept homosexuality as moral or natural or marriage for reasons involving biology, logic, law, and my right to have sustain my values. your censoring my comments is all that made me kept replying. i wont now...
I grew up Catholic. I know the bible. Pretty much everyone in this world does. However, what I was trying to illustrate, and what you can not deny, is that we all believe (or don't in my particular case, but not true for all gays by any means, and besides the point) in different versions, none of which are even remotely the same as the original version that was written well after the death of Christ. And what comes out of that is merely cherry picking of said beliefs that suit the individual.
"you cant force me to accept homosexuality as moral or natural or marriage"
there is a differene between stating an opinion, and being flat out wrong. in this case, you are wrong. the definition of "natural" is something that hasnt been contaminated by human hands. homosexuality has been around since before humanity, and it is also a part of over 1,500 other species. so by definition, it IS natural.
What was this loophole you speak of? And please, do some research. Did you ever hear of the Holocaust? It wasn't just for Jews, y'know....and just look at the hate that's going on in Iraq. And calling people faggots is very popular with bigots.
...and defend marriage! i bet YOU didnt even see MY vids lol! sorry, you FAILED to force your NON biological/religious arguments for homosexuality and the idea of re-defining marriage. biology, religion (which you dont understand) federal law and common sense arent with u. see my eternal religion/science vid and my homosexuality playlist. dont worry, i wont be an arrogant ignorant biggot like u and block comments i could care less
if you saw my WHOLE playlist you know what i think and why and there were some facts there for you regarding homosexuality. my eternal science/religion vid is there for you too. learn, enjoy, or dont. i dont see why i would have not voted yes on 8 again. youll have to settle for having equal rights including the right to do what ever and call it what ever. bye
I actually spend my Sundays watching extremely conservative videos (such as Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly) as well as watching rather religious videos.
I do like being informed on what the opposition is thinking. I find it fascinating, in all actuality. Honestly.
The worlds great religious traditions emphasize the love of neighbor as well as the love of God, and that compassion, justice, freedom, and respect for the dignity of all people are the religious most authentic & noble expressions. (Copied from an amicus brief submitted to the California Surpreme Court) I just couldn't have said it better!
Right on, great video! I am so sick and tired of the religious right "cherry-picking" from the Bible. Keep up the good work! The truth is always wonderful to hear!
you dont have the right to FORCE your beliefs upon others, even if its the BELIEF that homosexuality (not the impulse but the acts) is natural or moral or can lead to a marriage. homo couples have no real sex life to regulate so how can u pretend to be married. we voted yes on 8 here. if u wana know more and why, see my playlist on homosexuality. comment pending approval? censorship? uh huh.
You so speak the truth! I love you and all your points you so eloquently make. You spread your words so that even the thickest of heads can be permeated. Thank you for your video posts. I'll keep trying to teach the truth and I KNOW you will too. Together, the teachers, we all stand for the oppressed GLBT.
We WILL see total equality in these UNITED (?) States of America. I sometimes wonder about the UNITED part.
yea i think they could have gay marriage anywhere, doesn't affect the straights and who are we to say that gays can't marry thats like saying a black can't marry a white.
God damn there's a lot of haters on this board. But, dude, this is an incredibly insightful video. You have great quotes, and Biblical contradictions. I guess the hate mongering is just a final desperate attempt to belittle you. But fuck those guys. Logic hits harder than name calling.
Jesus ain't my Saviour! If he doesn't have the "Balls" to give me a message in person, it's merely "hear say" Plus, what would a guy with a virgin mother that hangs out with a bunch of dudes know about "normal" marriage between man and woman??? Furthermore I think it's just WAY to convenient that this "jesus" guy and all the people he knows are White Caucasians?!? just don't smell right.
Guess if he looked like Woody Allen, his "message" would be harder to sell. (to the non-white converts?)
But to be fair I had a six page document I was working from that I didn't want to break into multi-part videos because no one ever watches the other parts it seems.
I'm gonna do some more videos as soon as my life calms down a bit.
its pretty fucked, but we really shouldn't be voting on it in the first place, as it is a lawful union, not a religious union, so religious nuts can't really hide behind any of their false excuses its just discrimination. But it would probably not be an issue if there weren't two versions of marriage in the first place, i.e. some sort of non-religious union of partners ceremony. But yeah who is anyone to say what others can or cant do based on your own beliefs.
you still have time to change your ways and accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior. dont go against Gods word. The bible clearly states that homosexuality is a sin. You know the sodom and gomorrah story.
i belive in god but not the bible, the disiples wrote and the roman people were the ones to put the bible toghether so they could have just added what ever that wanted.
The difference is obvious. That's why there's a fuss. Maybe we should take away marriage and call everyone domestic partners? Would that not hurt? Marriage has always evolved. It wasn't always about love. It wasn't always about one man and one woman either. Just research a little bit.
Marriage has evolved? Has it ever occured to you that evolution can be for the worse. There is a reason why this was taboo in the past, the only reason why it is now being accepted is bascially because morals have disintegrated and been replaced with relative socialism where everyone gets what they want simply because refusing them is seen as infringing their rights. Marriage has not evolved, it is being distorted.
How about instead of trying to change marriage, request more benefits from domestic partnership and civil unions and people wouldn't have any problem with it. Many people who voted yes on 8 would likely support something like this. Everyone is happy, everyone wins.
I have nothing against gay couples and would love for everyone to be equal, but most people are stubborn and the church has too much influence. They want to preserve the tradition of marriage being between a man and a woman and traditions aren't shed easily.
today i saw an awesome shirt...on the back it said no on prop 8,on the front it said yes on prop 8, and in the middle where the seams are it said why cant there be a maybe...my whole point is there should be some kind of compromise or middle ground
I get where you're coming from, but that was called Domestic Partnership. Just imagine if the shoe was on the other foot. Would you not feel discriminated against? The fact that it needs to be called something else is discrimination, no matter how you look at it. :(
And as far as I know, from actually being gay, it isn't a choice. If it was a choice, you actively made the choice to be heterosexual, meaning at one point you were - or still are - extremely attracted to the same sex - but pursue the heterosexual lifestyle. I mean there's no proof to support that you can't help but to be straight, right?
Most people do, but most won't admit it because of the stigma. This was shown in a large study. Even "homophobes" that were exposed to gay pron showed levels of arousal.
In fact, homophobes experienced a much higher amount of arousal then non-homophobic straights. Homophobes are not only bigots. They're fucking fakers.
Why would someone choose to be gay when it's so hard to be gay in today's society? After all, there's people like you spreading intolerance and hatred. I don't really understand how you could think someone would purposefully choose such a hard life. People can't help who they love.
I might also add, that voting No on this, does not force ANYONE to change their moral values.
Of course, we live in a free country, so you can't expect other people to live by your personal moral values. -_- So I guess if your personal morals say that other people shouldn't be gay... You're shit out of luck.
Well, I haven't hear the whole video, and I just heard a bit more than before, so I do have to agree with some points he's making about language and time, but that's not what we are talking about here, we are talking about prop 8 am I wrong? Because if I'm I don't need to be here. All I have to say is that I don't see why we must change the definition of marriage. We can agree to have same sex couples unite in civil unions or domestic partnership, but not to have us change our traditions.
Oh my god, can you shut the fuck up and stop quoting the bible already? You know you religious freaks are so quick to whip out your bibles about same sex marriage, but I never see you doing that when you see people eating crustaceans, having sex while a woman is on her period, or when someone spills their seed on the ground, or when people get divorced.
But god forbid, if 2 people of the same sex try to get married. Fuck you.
Can't wait to see all these legal battles that are going to come forth. The poor 18,000 marriages in limbo due to one group of people "protecting marriage" is irony at its finest.
Oh god. You really need to stop quoting the bible. Can't you think for yourself. Where's the proof you're precious book is right anyway. You know what I think. I think the only reason people like you cling to the bible is they are too lazy to find their own truths in life, so they just settle down with a "truth" that's already written down for them. Well life is supposed to be a journey, and living life the way you do isn't a journey. It's a state of suspended animation.
Sorry kid, Yes on 8.. You cannot force us to change our moral views.. You are accepted already so respect goes both ways. We accept and respect you, but understand that we love God more and our traditions should not be touch by anyone! No matter how hard you push against it. The bible is not flexible, but we have been already, so take what you've and be thankful. I say, why don't you start by accepting who you are at birth? Male or Female instead of blaming and accusing a society of intolerance
Hey, being gay/bi has nothing to do with not accepting your gender. That is transexuality. Try being a little more educated in your responses. And who cares if the bible isn't flexible. Fine! don't let gays have Christian marriages, I don't see why they wouldwant to anyway. But there are other forms of marriage outside of the Christian institution. They should at the very least be able to have secular marriages.
Here's the problem. Judges on the Supreme Court are set in place to combat inequality when more than half of the population is racist or sexist or unfairly biased for any other reason. The 4 Judges in this case saw that majority be damned, this was hate. If Prop 8 passes the checks and balances are gone, popular opinion should not be the law of the land. Vote No for freedom
Ok, so we're all clear. Prop 8 will not lead to anyone telling your kid he should be gay. When you browbeat your backwards idea of morals into your child no law will contradict that. Saying that the majority think it's wrong it a pretty vague generalization, I'm not gay but I don't think it's wrong, neither do my straight friends, even my religious parents have to admit that they have no problem with people choosing to be with who they want. Yes on Prop 8 would be the vote that twists morality
You know until I started seeing the responses to this and the yes on prop 8 vids I had no idea there were so many crazy people out there.
Odd, on many things WI is considered a conservative state and a ban on gay marriage did pass here... but when I bring up prop 8 to people I've just met they take the same stance I do.. everyone should be voting no because otherwise they don't understand what that vote really stands for.
But I live in a tiny bubble of 200,000 people who think reasonably
Welcome to the 21st century. The year is 2008. The Nuclear Family of the 50's is dead! Those of you who resist evolution will face the same destiny. Resistance is futile.
GO WORK ON YOUR 50-74% FAILURE RATE DYSFUNCTIONAL TRADITIONAL MARRIAGES!
When you have archived a decent success rate, maybe under 10% you have the right to say something about your traditional marriage, and your holier than thou attitude might hold some water. Till then...
Maybe heterosexuals can work on this FIRST! "The divorce rate in America for first marriage, vs second or third marriage 50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second and 74% of third marriages end in divorce." GOOGLE IT! Do you want to blame gays for your already failed marriages? Maybe you are afraid that gays will do a better job at marriage? GO WORK ON YOUR DYSFUNCTIONAL TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE! Just because YOU fail, does not mean others can't make it work.
Well said, it seems that some people didn't realise that. I heard Queen Victoria said lesbians didn't exist, which is why in Britain only male homosexual acts used to be illegal. Happily we now have same sex unions :)
Don't you know that not everyone believes in what's written in the bible? You're welcome to believe it yourself but you have no right to try and make others do the same or suggest that state laws should be based purely on only one religion's beliefs.
I think that the bible wasn't written by God (mostly because it's highly unlikely she exists) at all but by MEN who wanted people to live as they saw fit. Nothing but a way to control the masses. Opium fuer das Volk!
It's a sad world we live in where people have to attack human right, and others have to defend them. I think we should focus more on, the economy, jobs, health care, education, poverty, curing diseases, ending the war, and so many other issues we face. Why are we not putting our energy into making this a better world for all humans? Is that not what Jesus, Gandhi, Buddha, and all other great spiritual leaders have done? The haters of this world are a minority. Let's focus on the big picture.
"For many years, prevailing attitudes of racism in the United States prompted many states to adopt laws that explicitly denied "Negroes" the right to marry whites. By 1940, a majority (31 out of 48) of states had banned interracial marriage
(or"miscegenation") in some form. The issue was settled once and for all in 1967. In the case of Loving v. Virginia the United States Supreme Court ruled that all bans on interracial marriage were unconstitutional."
Fuck prop 8. It's bullshit that people are voting on human rights. This probably wouldn't happen if we kept church and state seperate. Sadly, the bible does say that god hates gays.
Leviticus 18 "No man shall lie with another man as he would with a woman. It is an abomination!"
Thats just a taste of what kind of bullshit is in the bible
I think every religious fanatic in office because they don't deserve to run this country unless they knock this shit off.
Not all have to be gay!!! you are considering two extreme cases, what about the majority being heterosexuals while a minority of homosexuals live exists too? There have always been gay people throughout the history and there will be. homosexuality is a part of nature, it is also observed within animals.
Without religion, there is NO reason to reject homosexuals, bisexuals, heterosexuals, or anything in-between. I recently started a poll to find out what the real issue is, asking people if they support (or do not support) gay marriage, and if they are religious or not. So far, 99% of non-religious people support it, while only 18% of religious people support it (according to my poll).
I love when people call those judges activists. The 61% of California who were for Prop 22 is completely skewed in it's presentation. Only 4.1 million people even voted. That's definitely not even coming close to a majority of the population of California - even back in 2000. Only 61% of the 4.1 million people voted to keep marriage between a man and a woman. In all honesty, due to MOST people NOT voting, it would seem the majority didn't even care about gay marriage one way or another.
A lot of gay people that I meet are very nice people, and I have nothing against gays personally. I don't agree with it as a lifestyle (I am allowed to have that belief, right?) that's why I don't want to educate my kids otherwise (I am allowed to choose that values that I raise my kids with right?)
I will raise my kids to respect all people, regardless of beliefs and lifestyles, but I don't want them force-fed with something that contradicts my fundamental beliefs.
Of course you can teach your children whatever you'd like. I'd never say you couldn't. But please do check out my other video on the children aspect of this topic.
A basic understanding of our constitution would inform you of the separation of church and state. The first amendment in our constitution recognizes the separation between church and state. Simple as that. If we wanted to pass a law against everything we felt uncomfortable we would be anarchists.
No on Proposition 8, November 4, 2008- California.
"religion is a paramount contributor to human misery. It is not merely the opium of the masses, it is the cyanide." -Tom Robbins enlighten the masses Bill!
What if it were illegal to marry because you had brown eyes, or were too tall or too short? What if only right handed people were allowed to marry? Or only people with star shaped birthmarks? The FACT is that you cannot control who you love. It is a FACT! So why sould someone be denied a basic human right because of something they have NO CONTROL over? I'm a straight man. Some women I don't find attractive, some I do. I can't control that. LET PEOPLE LOVE AND MARRY EACHOTHER! Gender aside.
Christians are so god-damned stupid & loony. Just like the muslims, these jackasses want to impose their stupid man-made "word of god" ideology on everyone else. These lunatics REALLY believe they're going to be TELEPORTED TO HEAVE...STARTREK STYLE in some rapture ("beam me up jesus")...LOL!!! You may as well start believing in: the tooth fairy, easter bunny, zombies, unicorns, leprechauns and vampires if you believe CHRISTIAN MYTHOLOGY (the bible)
Your civilization argument is crude. What are you saying? Rome fell because of gay sex? What utter BS. That's not even an argument that's logical. Rome fell because of politics and infighting. Actually, also, the majority of people in the US do NOT think it's wrong. Recent polls suggest that most people, though they may not AGREE with it have no problem letting two people who love each other marry. It's only the religious right that is having a hissy fit because they're afraid. Of WHAT?
Sure, you DO have the right to voice your opinion. What you SHOULDN'T have the right to do is force people who love each other to not be married because of YOUR beliefs or because YOU get offended. It's the same reasoning that was used to discriminate against black people 50+ years ago.
I love how people say "I don't believe in God", but soon as something goes wrong they ask God for help. Go ask Buddha for help when something goes wrong for ya. Your right about Christians being sometime Chriatians. I live in CT and do not believe in Gay marriage.
I don;t really understand your point. You think "Buddha" wouldn't help someone, but "God" would? I find that to be interesting. Everyone thinks their religion is the only religion that is valid. But, regardless of that, why do you not "believe in" gay marriage?
Also, currently Canada, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa & Spain are among those places that recognize gay marriage. I haven't heard anything about any wars breaking out due to gay marriage. As for who would benefit from gay marriage - people who are in love and want to spend the rest of their lives with that person. And yes, I'm saying that most people are not only wrong, but bigots. Seems it's the part about two men that bothers everyone, as most people think of lesbians as hot.
Very well researched. I hope gay marriage will be legalized after the election, but even if not, it will be someday, I know it. I agree with what you said about the Bible and choosing what to be okay with. The Bible says that no one may contact a women during her period - I don't think that religious people still follow that one, as well as many other decrees in the Bible. Homosexuality should not be any more of a problem. This is why I'm not religious; there's too much hypocrisy
Yes, when you use language tools or some other language translation tool(s), and you translate something into one language, and then back to the original it will come out sounding weird. I have done this before. However, a human translation is totally different when not done by a computer. Good point, but there was more to it than what you said.
Actually, the human translation is weird too, since some words don't exist in every language and so you are left to interrupt something that is already not very specific. Hence all of the interruptions from the bibles. And a human translation is subject to the human, vs. the computer which is going solely off the words.
I knew a minister who taught bible study classes and who had to learn Greek and Hebrew as part of his study to become a minister (there are still a couple churches that require that) and he straight out opened the bible (his Greek copy and his English copy) and showed people a passage that went from badger to beluga whale in translation- his point was you can't open your bible and know what god thinks... human translations are often worse because humans are walking errors
I love how passionate and heated about it you got at the end when you started talking about religion around the 8th minute :) We can really see how important this subject is for you and i just want to say i hope one day you will all have the same rights as heterosexuals and discrimination in this world will slowly rot to nothing! Good luck to you with everything :)
Excellent video, and I agree with you 100%. I will never support Proposition 8, any similar bill, or any person/group who supports such a bill.
Besides that, I wonder if you would be kind enough to message me with whatever sources you have that provides the full list of benefits included in marriages yet excluded from civil unions. It would be greatly appreciated.
hate and malice are the thing that are of the dvil not of god. and those who propergate hate speek the word from the lips of lusifer and not of the holy ghost.
and there are many churches built up which cause envyings, and strifes, and malice. and there are also secret combinations, even as in times of old, according to the the combinations of the devil, for he is the founder of all these things
I agree they are both in the bible, but when you put them together which very often gay people compare them as being the same thing. It offends people who are passionate about their ancestor being enslaved. I did not mean to offend you. I apologize if I did. I believe marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman and if they had not consummated a relationship than you as a special man would not have been born. I just think peole are being mislead and that sucks.
I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this. I think slavery was absolutely horrible! As a gay man, it offends me that I cannot marry someone I want to, because of something that comes from the bible. And a civil union, even with all of the same benefits, which most places don't even offer, is a slap in the face, saying that I'm not an equal. I'd fight for the freedom of slaves. It deeply saddens me when I'm not viewed as an equal. I know gays who have had children too. But thank you.
Yes, you did compare being gay and slavery then just added more with it. Lack of history you are funny. I would totally flip that. The only slaves that stayed slaves knew nothing else, but how to be a slave, or some did fall in love they were few and far between. You can fake not being gay and some people will believe it. I did not knock you for your gay lifestyle that I don't agree with. I just ask that you stop comparing it to being a slave.
The correlation between slavery and the persecution of gay people is they are both in the bible. The bible was okay with slavery. The bible is against homosexuality. I cannot fake being straight, nor should I have to try. I cannot change whom I find attractive, nor should I have to try. Marriage should not offer ANY benefits as if they are not going to reflect those same benefits onto two people of the same sex, based on one particular religions views. Marriage is not for just one religion.
How can a person argue on whether slavery is is anything like being gay when the slaves werenot only stolen from their homes, beaten, raped, and made to breastfeed another persons child, had to pick cotton for their entire life, whipped not for pleasure, impregnated by someone they despise, separated from there families, degrated, and much more.
You tell me what gay person had that done to them and I will personally agree being gay is just like slavery.
And suddenly your lack of history is showing, otherwise you would know that not all slaves were forced. Some did in fact go willingly. I'm not comparing slavery to gay rights, I'm comparing rights that were denied people, which is comparable. Perhaps you missed the part in my video of Matthew Shepard who was robbed, pistol whipped, tortured, tied to a fence in a remote, rural area, and left to die. But obviously, that was his problem for making the wrong choice in life, huh?
Speaking AS a gay man, I can assure you that it's not a choice. Whether science can prove it or not. I was seven when I first realized. One can argue that slavery is a choice too, but that's just as asinine.
Also, if being gay is a choice as science can't prove it either way, well then, the same would HAVE to be true for being straight. However you don't believe that you choose to be straight, do you?
3 down 47 to go. what exactly is the extreme predjudice of those oposed to us having the same rights as hetero couples? They have no opposition to taking our tax dollars. Next time one of you call an ambulance to save your life or the fire department to dous the fire destroying your home, or the police to protect you from a violent crime... ask them first if they recieved any funding from gay couples so you can politely decline that service.
@Gunner0987ify Thank you for your opinion.

Thanks!
lisztnut 2 years ago
Obviously never meant to offend you. You should check out my other video, as this one was really rushed for time. But religion had to be brought up, as that's the reason Prop 8 existed. If you look at the full description on the side, you'll see that I took away the credibility by showing a few of bible verses that contradict themselves. I grew up Catholic, and my family is rather conservative and Republican, and even my neighbors had a Yes on 8 sign so I felt religion needed to be tackled here.
billwenham 2 years ago
Bill, I spoke too strongly when I said YOU offended me. I view marriage as a purely legal and secular institution. Too many people in this country have mixed the two, when they shouldn't be. If you want you god of choice to "bless" your holy matrimony, then that's fine, but the government shouldn't validate it, because that implies that they approve of your religion. Do you see my point? France will not recognize religious weddings. One more thing: I'm legally (married) to my partner in CA!
lisztnut 2 years ago
Aw. That's so sweet. Congratulations!
:)

I liked your point about atheists getting married but I can't say I've heard too many arguments being made about marriage being a religious rite; it obviously isn't anymore. This too shall pass, I'm sure of it. Just keep doing what you're doing.
GrimmReeferX 2 years ago
I've heard the religious argument a lot. My neighbors, my family, and various people in my community. Hell, that was the whole reason prop 8 came about in the first place. But yeah, it shouldn't matter.
billwenham 2 years ago
sorry, what I meant to say was that I haven't heard that marriage should be exclusively for the religious. I get your point, and you're right.
GrimmReeferX 2 years ago
Oh I know you meant, I was just saying that a lot of people I've run into are not that bright...

I would like to think that the cherry-picking and things like removing homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses, etc. is manifest of people slowly growing out of unnacceptable ways.
GrimmReeferX 2 years ago
lastly, quit using your religion to justify your ignorance. you called scientology a "cult," yet you have clearly been brainwashed yourself. america is a non-religious nation. it has been even before obama "declared" it one. so religion should have no part in personal cases such as gay marriage and abortion.
CalfCreek4x12x08 2 years ago
and as for "re-defining" marriage, america has re-defined marriage like crazy to custom-fit straight peoples needs. it used to be illeagl to divorce, women used to have zero rights in marriage, parents used to have the right to choose who their children married, ect. so the whole "gays cant re-define marriage" argument is invalid.
i say, for all the states that dont allow gays to get married, they should also make it illeagl for straight couples to get divorced.

Playitalready 2 years ago
I grew up Catholic. I know the bible. Pretty much everyone in this world does. However, what I was trying to illustrate, and what you can not deny, is that we all believe (or don't in my particular case, but not true for all gays by any means, and besides the point) in different versions, none of which are even remotely the same as the original version that was written well after the death of Christ. And what comes out of that is merely cherry picking of said beliefs that suit the individual.
billwenham 2 years ago
"you cant force me to accept homosexuality as moral or natural or marriage"
there is a differene between stating an opinion, and being flat out wrong. in this case, you are wrong. the definition of "natural" is something that hasnt been contaminated by human hands. homosexuality has been around since before humanity, and it is also a part of over 1,500 other species. so by definition, it IS natural.
CalfCreek4x12x08 2 years ago
What was this loophole you speak of? And please, do some research. Did you ever hear of the Holocaust? It wasn't just for Jews, y'know....and just look at the hate that's going on in Iraq. And calling people faggots is very popular with bigots.

its pretty fucked, but we really shouldn't be voting on it in the first place, as it is a lawful union, not a religious union, so religious nuts can't really hide behind any of their false excuses its just discrimination. But it would probably not be an issue if there weren't two versions of marriage in the first place, i.e. some sort of non-religious union of partners ceremony. But yeah who is anyone to say what others can or cant do based on your own beliefs.

Also what is the difference between the word partnership and marriage? seems like you just feel left out.
twinkietrail 3 years ago
The difference is obvious. That's why there's a fuss. Maybe we should take away marriage and call everyone domestic partners? Would that not hurt? Marriage has always evolved. It wasn't always about love. It wasn't always about one man and one woman either. Just research a little bit.
billwenham 3 years ago
Marriage has evolved? Has it ever occured to you that evolution can be for the worse. There is a reason why this was taboo in the past, the only reason why it is now being accepted is bascially because morals have disintegrated and been replaced with relative socialism where everyone gets what they want simply because refusing them is seen as infringing their rights. Marriage has not evolved, it is being distorted.
ReppiNdaKinG 3 years ago
Evolution can be for the worse......I totally agree......look at mankind.
billwenham 3 years ago
How about instead of trying to change marriage, request more benefits from domestic partnership and civil unions and people wouldn't have any problem with it. Many people who voted yes on 8 would likely support something like this. Everyone is happy, everyone wins.
twinkietrail 3 years ago
Same sex couples won't be happy until there is marriage equality. Civil rights always need to come before religious rights.
billwenham 3 years ago
I have nothing against gay couples and would love for everyone to be equal, but most people are stubborn and the church has too much influence. They want to preserve the tradition of marriage being between a man and a woman and traditions aren't shed easily.
twinkietrail 3 years ago
I can tell you're not someone filled with hate, which is why I approved your comments.

billwenham 3 years ago

razvi3 3 years ago
And as far as I know, from actually being gay, it isn't a choice. If it was a choice, you actively made the choice to be heterosexual, meaning at one point you were - or still are - extremely attracted to the same sex - but pursue the heterosexual lifestyle. I mean there's no proof to support that you can't help but to be straight, right?
billwenham 3 years ago
just because you believe that you were made gay doesnt mean you actually were
i have diffivulty admitting this but i actually do occasionally experience homosexual thoughts and feelings
razvi3 3 years ago

Well, I haven't hear the whole video, and I just heard a bit more than before, so I do have to agree with some points he's making about language and time, but that's not what we are talking about here, we are talking about prop 8 am I wrong? Because if I'm I don't need to be here. All I have to say is that I don't see why we must change the definition of marriage. We can agree to have same sex couples unite in civil unions or domestic partnership, but not to have us change our traditions.
Livyvy 3 years ago
Oh my god, can you shut the fuck up and stop quoting the bible already? You know you religious freaks are so quick to whip out your bibles about same sex marriage, but I never see you doing that when you see people eating crustaceans, having sex while a woman is on her period, or when someone spills their seed on the ground, or when people get divorced.
But god forbid, if 2 people of the same sex try to get married. Fuck you.

Xheyzarc 3 years ago
Sorry kid, Yes on 8.. You cannot force us to change our moral views.. You are accepted already so respect goes both ways. We accept and respect you, but understand that we love God more and our traditions should not be touch by anyone! No matter how hard you push against it. The bible is not flexible, but we have been already, so take what you've and be thankful. I say, why don't you start by accepting who you are at birth? Male or Female instead of blaming and accusing a society of intolerance
Livyvy 3 years ago
Prop 8 is not about protecting your traditions... It's about forcing your traditions on everyone else. Asshat.
Things are FINE as they are now, we do not need Prop 8, to create more inequality! A NO vote on this is the only "moral" choice!
NikoKun 3 years ago 2
Hey, being gay/bi has nothing to do with not accepting your gender. That is transexuality. Try being a little more educated in your responses. And who cares if the bible isn't flexible. Fine! don't let gays have Christian marriages, I don't see why they wouldwant to anyway. But there are other forms of marriage outside of the Christian institution. They should at the very least be able to have secular marriages.
Xheyzarc 3 years ago
Well researched, clear, good perspective on religion, clear, thoughtful, persuasive; if I didn't agree with you already I would now!
Amandasimage 3 years ago
Here's the problem. Judges on the Supreme Court are set in place to combat inequality when more than half of the population is racist or sexist or unfairly biased for any other reason. The 4 Judges in this case saw that majority be damned, this was hate. If Prop 8 passes the checks and balances are gone, popular opinion should not be the law of the land. Vote No for freedom
icon52 3 years ago
Ok, so we're all clear. Prop 8 will not lead to anyone telling your kid he should be gay. When you browbeat your backwards idea of morals into your child no law will contradict that. Saying that the majority think it's wrong it a pretty vague generalization, I'm not gay but I don't think it's wrong, neither do my straight friends, even my religious parents have to admit that they have no problem with people choosing to be with who they want. Yes on Prop 8 would be the vote that twists morality
icon52 3 years ago
You know until I started seeing the responses to this and the yes on prop 8 vids I had no idea there were so many crazy people out there.
Odd, on many things WI is considered a conservative state and a ban on gay marriage did pass here... but when I bring up prop 8 to people I've just met they take the same stance I do.. everyone should be voting no because otherwise they don't understand what that vote really stands for.
But I live in a tiny bubble of 200,000 people who think reasonably

It's a sad world we live in where people have to attack human right, and others have to defend them. I think we should focus more on, the economy, jobs, health care, education, poverty, curing diseases, ending the war, and so many other issues we face. Why are we not putting our energy into making this a better world for all humans? Is that not what Jesus, Gandhi, Buddha, and all other great spiritual leaders have done? The haters of this world are a minority. Let's focus on the big picture.

Gays are the new Negroes of the 21 century.
Virginia the United States Supreme Court ruled that all bans on interracial marriage were unconstitutional."
mariodnyc 3 years ago 6
Fuck prop 8. It's bullshit that people are voting on human rights. This probably wouldn't happen if we kept church and state seperate. Sadly, the bible does say that god hates gays.
Leviticus 18 "No man shall lie with another man as he would with a woman. It is an abomination!"

EXCELLENT JOB! EXCELLENT VIDEO!!
Straight Atheist Male of 31 years old here.
Keep making great videos!

In all honesty, due to MOST people NOT voting, it would seem the majority didn't even care about gay marriage one way or another.
billwenham 3 years ago
A lot of gay people that I meet are very nice people, and I have nothing against gays personally. I don't agree with it as a lifestyle (I am allowed to have that belief, right?) that's why I don't want to educate my kids otherwise (I am allowed to choose that values that I raise my kids with right?)
I will raise my kids to respect all people, regardless of beliefs and lifestyles, but I don't want them force-fed with something that contradicts my fundamental beliefs.

Of WHAT?
Kiltedwolf 3 years ago 7
Sure, you DO have the right to voice your opinion. What you SHOULDN'T have the right to do is force people who love each other to not be married because of YOUR beliefs or because YOU get offended. It's the same reasoning that was used to discriminate against black people 50+ years ago.
Kiltedwolf 3 years ago 7
I love how people say "I don't believe in God", but soon as something goes wrong they ask God for help. Go ask Buddha for help when something goes wrong for ya. Your right about Christians being sometime Chriatians. I live in CT and do not believe in Gay marriage.
67lyman 3 years ago
I don;t really understand your point. You think "Buddha" wouldn't help someone, but "God" would? I find that to be interesting. Everyone thinks their religion is the only religion that is valid. But, regardless of that, why do you not "believe in" gay marriage?
billwenham 3 years ago
Also, currently Canada, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa & Spain are among those places that recognize gay marriage. I haven't heard anything about any wars breaking out due to gay marriage. As for who would benefit from gay marriage - people who are in love and want to spend the rest of their lives with that person. And yes, I'm saying that most people are not only wrong, but bigots. Seems it's the part about two men that bothers everyone, as most people think of lesbians as hot.
billwenham 3 years ago

Roxality 3 years ago

I just think peole are being mislead and that sucks.
tamiagordon 3 years ago
I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this. I think slavery was absolutely horrible! As a gay man, it offends me that I cannot marry someone I want to, because of something that comes from the bible. And a civil union, even with all of the same benefits, which most places don't even offer, is a slap in the face, saying that I'm not an equal. I'd fight for the freedom of slaves. It deeply saddens me when I'm not viewed as an equal. I know gays who have had children too. But thank you.
billwenham 3 years ago
Yes, you did compare being gay and slavery then just added more with it. Lack of history you are funny. I would totally flip that. The only slaves that stayed slaves knew nothing else, but how to be a slave, or some did fall in love they were few and far between. You can fake not being gay and some people will believe it. I did not knock you for your gay lifestyle that I don't agree with. I just ask that you stop comparing it to being a slave.
thx
tamiagordon 3 years ago
The correlation between slavery and the persecution of gay people is they are both in the bible. The bible was okay with slavery. The bible is against homosexuality. I cannot fake being straight, nor should I have to try. I cannot change whom I find attractive, nor should I have to try. Marriage should not offer ANY benefits as if they are not going to reflect those same benefits onto two people of the same sex, based on one particular religions views. Marriage is not for just one religion.
billwenham 3 years ago
How can a person argue on whether slavery is is anything like being gay when the slaves werenot only stolen from their homes, beaten, raped, and made to breastfeed another persons child, had to pick cotton for their entire life, whipped not for pleasure, impregnated by someone they despise, separated from there families, degrated, and much more.
You tell me what gay person had that done to them and I will personally agree being gay is just like slavery.
thx
tamiagordon 3 years ago
And suddenly your lack of history is showing, otherwise you would know that not all slaves were forced. Some did in fact go willingly. I'm not comparing slavery to gay rights, I'm comparing rights that were denied people, which is comparable. Perhaps you missed the part in my video of Matthew Shepard who was robbed, pistol whipped, tortured, tied to a fence in a remote, rural area, and left to die. But obviously, that was his problem for making the wrong choice in life, huh?
billwenham 3 years ago
Please stop comparing being gay with slavery. It is not the same thing. ONE of these two topics have a choice.
thx
tamiagordon 3 years ago
Speaking AS a gay man, I can assure you that it's not a choice. Whether science can prove it or not. I was seven when I first realized. One can argue that slavery is a choice too, but that's just as asinine.
billwenham 3 years ago
Also, if being gay is a choice as science can't prove it either way, well then, the same would HAVE to be true for being straight. However you don't believe that you choose to be straight, do you?

3 down 47 to go. what exactly is the extreme predjudice of those oposed to us having the same rights as hetero couples? They have no opposition to taking our tax dollars. Next time one of you call an ambulance to save your life or the fire department to dous the fire destroying your home, or the police to protect you from a violent crime... ask them first if they recieved any funding from gay couples so you can politely decline that service.
