Mike portnoy sounded similar to the rev on the new album and if u really listened to it you would realize they didn't change that much from and the wicked end. It's all focused on sick riffs, awesome choruses, nice harmonies, nasty beats and insane guitar solos. Nothin different. And when they did make a change it wasnt to sell more albums... they followed there insane creativity

They did intentionally become softer, but, they also stopped experimenting and stuck to a style they aren't as good at performing because it appeals to a wider audience. You can claim that Matt doesnt growl anymore because of preference, but, the fact that they don't sing almost universally Christian themed songs proves that they have changed musically, not just stylistically, because it appeals to a bigger audience. That is selling out in all ways.

They experimented the fuck out of their self titled. Going from in your face rock, to having a whole orchestra in A Little piece of Heaven, to a distinct country style in Dear God. They experiment all the time with their music.

Breaking Benjamin is another. They still include the same topics as always, their own respective themes, etc, while also branching out. Rise Against does have some songs to appeal to a wider audience, but, for the purpose of spreading a message; not sales. A7X changed to increase sales. They sold the fuck out.
