Invasions of non-belligerent nations are never carried out for the sake of vague ideals like "freedom" & "liberty". That's PR spin. The US invasions of Mexico, Cuba, the Philippines, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya as well as a host of "covert" coup d'etats in Latin America & Africa were all premeditated wars of conquest: trade route expansion, cheap labor force acquisition, natural resource seizure & export control.
People don't realize how important the Middle East is/was. While we were busy warring with ourselves in Europe during the Middle Ages, The Islamic Empire bought, kept, and preserved much of our written history. If it weren't for them, all of it would have been lost and we would probably still be suffering for it. The schools they run to this day are ran the same way Plato taught his students. They will pull through this, they already would have if we didn't fuck with the Shah of Iran.
Of course they're not fighting for your freedom. The British retreated hundreds of years ago. You've been free since then. All other cries of "fighting for your freedom" are nothing more than propaganda. You're not under any credible threat of subjugation whatsoever.
They're fighting for resources. Damn those middle easterners for sitting on your oil! How did it wind up under their soil anyway?
@ChipArgyle While I agree I don't think it was for freedom, I have a really hard time believing it was for oil. I mean how long have we been in Iraq and we have yet to claim a single oil field.
@DarkBunnyLord It's not quite that simple. Iraq War part II was largely revenge because Saddam tried to off Dubya's daddy. And if the US can go into the middle east and kick some poor country's ass, even one that doesn't even export that much oil, then the other countries will tend to play ball a little better when it comes to oil export negotiations, won't they. It's an intimidation game. Do you think they would be there if there wasn't any oil for the taking?
Every animal that has ever existed tries to secure a better future for itself and it's community. Everything our country does is not "right" but neither has any country who has ever existed, nor has any person for that matter. Everyone is selfish at times and it is true that we do not help others if our own chance of survival diminishes. Our country obviously chooses which freedoms to fight for based on it's own interests, and so would you.
These revolutions around the Middle East should prove that people, given time, can take care of themselves. The U.S. military should leave global policing to the U.N. and get home to protect their own people on their own ground. Whether or not people in need across the globe should be protected is quite beside the point really, that is what the U.N. exists for. Our military, our country. Unless we launch an invasion of our own, in which case I would move to another country in protest.
@lalo1989cm Freedom is a privilege. It's called social contract theory. While in reality there is nothing truly moral or immoral, a group of people can get together and decide to share resources and space in exchange for following a set of rules they feel is appropriate (giving you rights). If you go against those rules, you break the contract (losing your rights). Comedian George Carlin explained it quite eloquently, I think it's on youtube under "You have no rights."
@SkySoldierMike88 statistically you have a better chance of being hit by lightning twice in one day, or dying from multiple bee stings, or a drunk driver, than being killed by terrorists. are you in favor of declaring war on bees and alcoholics, and hiding under your bed all day? if not, why? going by your logic, we should be shelling out trillions of dollars in government contracts to develop technology that will prevent lightning strikes in populated areas. right, mike?
So I get what your saying, in the literal sense of not fighting for your freedom. Its the idea of Freedom we fight for, why can't other people have what we have? and why shouldn't they? Wars are all fought for reasons and if you ask me someone had to pay for attacking us and killing innocent Americans. Those people have and now it's just helping them achieve what we have true freedom.
@SkySoldierMike88 and why do you think there are anti-american terrorists in the first place? do you think it has anything to do with our government's support of dictators in oil-rich countries?
@SkySoldierMike88 That is the most insane retard logic I've ever heard. What does that even mean someone have to pay for attacking us? So if someone broke into my house and killed my wife, would it then be okay for me to kill someone in your family. I mean...someone has to pay.
I see you point good ones at that, but it's a process, we are fighting for freedoms of other people, i;ve see this with my own eyes, they don't show all the good things that happen on TV my friend which is why I don't really watch the news anymore other then catch on recent events. lol and you cant just drop troops in every country and settle there conflicts for them. there has got to be a reason, we had legitimate reasons even if other reasons overshadow them, War makes money i won't deny that.
@SkySoldierMike88 How are you fighting for the freedoms of other people when the US has supported dictatorships for decades? Plus none of the people in those countries like the US.
I agree 100%

@ChipArgyle That sounds perfectly sound and logical, but the results don't reflect it at all with vastly expanded oil prices form imported oil.
DarkBunnyLord 5 months ago
@DarkBunnyLord Oil pricing is a complicated game. This is more about keeping the oil flowing.

Terrorists take away our freedoms by creating a threat that the right can exploit to pass dictatorial laws. The Patriot Act for example.
